Game 130: Twins @ Angels
Minnesota Twins @ Los Angeles Angels
Pregame
The Twins face their toughest pitcher of the series in Ervin Santana, he of the great fastball/slider combination. Santana owns the fourth-fastest fastball in baseball, averaging 94.3 mph. He's not necessarily a ground-ball or fly-ball pitcher, because he gets a fair bit of both. High strikeout rates, low walk rates and an incredible 3.26 xFIP make him a mean customer.
Kevin Slowey is coming off what could be the best start of his career, where he K'd 12 in seven innings against the A's. Over his last three starts he's logged 18.2 innings and allowed just three earned runs. Stingy on the walks but able to ring up the strikeouts on occasion, Slowey's the proud owner of a 5.35 K/BB ratio...which is just amazing. When his breaking balls are working, Kevin can be as effective as anyone.

this will be a tough day
especially if Slowey pitches like he did last time. Twins will struggle vs Santana but hopefully will be able to score a few runs. Still, we have succeeded in splitting but a series win vs 2nd toughest team in the AL would be a piece of art!

Do you mean a close game?
If I recall Slowey was awesome last time out (7 IP, 12 K, 1 ER). Hopefully we can take the series. Coming in I would have told you that I’d be happy with two. But after the Twins did that in the first two games, I’d really love to see the trip start off 3-1 against one of the best teams in baseball.

Lineups and other notes courtesy of Joe C at the Strib
ANAHEIM — Joe Mauer is starting at catcher again today, as the Twins look to win this series against the Angels.
Mauer is 6-for-9 with four RBI in his career against hard-throwing Angels righthander Ervin Santana.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he’ll have more chances to give Mauer a break with the Twins facing six consecutive lefthanded pitchers starting on Tuesday. Look for Mauer to get Tuesday or Wednesday off in Seattle.
(*) To make room on their Class AAA Rochester roster for Brian Bass, the Twins released reliever Casey Daigle.
(*) Matt Tolbert remains on track to be activated from the DL on Sept. 1, when rosters expand. He will likely move from Class AA New Britain to Rochester for the final week of the minor-league season.
Twins (74-55)
1. Denard Span, RF
2. Alexi Casilla, 2B
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Justin Morneau, 1B
5. Jason Kubel, LF
6. Randy Ruiz, DH
7. Nick Punto, 3B
8. Adam Everett, SS
9. Carlos Gomez, CF
Starting pitcher: RH Kevin Slowey
Angels (78-50)

2. Erick Aybar, SS
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Vladimir Guerrero, DH
5. Torii Hunter, CF
6. Garret Anderson, LF

Buscher must be in the doghouse...
…after those two errors last night. I have to admit I thought perhaps it’s a bit premature to tag him the future of the position based on how poor he looked on those two plays. Probably just nerves though. He’s looked good over there this year.

WNAX
The Yankson station is WNAX – it’s 570 AM, and it’s got a ridiculous range (when I go from Sioux Falls to Rochester, I can leave it on WNAX past Albert Lea). I just checked their website, though, and I can’t find anything about streaming – you sure they still do that? It seems like the kind of thing MLB would stop pretty quickly, since they offer that as a pay service.

is a damn Loogy. His splits are incredibly awful against righties that was a shit decision by Gardy. He knew that 3 righties would be coming up and he didn’t pull him. The bullpen hasn’t had too much work yet this series so I don’t know why you don’t bring in Nathan or Crain or hell even Guerrier to start that inning and have Breslow warming up.

That was a crappy way to lose a game. Damnit, I wish Gardy would bring Nathan in like he said he would. Doing it once and saying you’re going to do it just doesn’t cut it Gardy. With the other teams 3 best hitters coming up in a one run game you’ve got to put him in and possibly even make him go 2. I’m usually not one to harp on Gardy but man that pissed me off today.

Despite a tremensously dissapointing last two games, if you'd have told me before the series that we'd come out with a split, I'd be happy. Gotta' look at it that way.

Gomez has GOT to catch that ball
Sorry folks, but he has got to get back to the wall and catch Guerrero’s ball.
He has this habit of slide stepping and prancing but not actually turning and running straight back. If he does, he catches both balls, last night and today, and the Twins have a better chance of winning both games.
Not sure what happened to the Kid who hurt himself demolishing fences in Colorado and Cleveland earlier this year, but CF is for keeps and right now, he is playing soft. As did Kubel on the single in the 7th. He charges it and the guy doesn’t even run on him.
That’s inexperience at best, and a kind of non-chalance at worst, that makes a team average. Combined with Everett’s choke throw two weeks ago, the Twins have found a way to lose games which, really, you should not be allowed to get away with in a pennant chase.

Come on Baltimore!
Chicago and Baltimore are going to be resuming their game from 4/28 that was suspended in the 12th inning along with playing a regularly scheduled game tomorrow.
Hopefully Baltimore can get one big hit and shut down the Sox in the 12th and then pull out another win in the regular game for us.
