Pregame after the jump...

Star-divide

Pregame

On August 17 the Twins welcomed Ryan Feierabend to the major leagues with a 6-run bombardment.  He lasted three innings, striking out and walking one batter.  With all due credit he bounced back against the A's, giving up just one run over five innings on his 23rd birthday.  With a sub-90's fastball and average stuff, hopefully the Twins offense can get it right tonight.

Glen Perkins is 7-1 with a 3.39 ERA over his last 10 starts, giving up 67 hits and 16 walks over 66.1 innings.  He's still not striking many guys out (just 29 in that span), but have nevertheless been effective.  His keys, as always, are to keep the ball in the park and to be aggressive; he doens't have the stuff to nit-pick around the dish and hope the opposing hitters take cuts on the bad ones.  He needs to keep the ball in play to record outs, and recently his ground-ball and fly-ball rates have levelled off--each sitting at exactly 39.5%--which makes the hits he does give up less dangerous.  Hopefully he keeps it that way.

Awfully surprised

Perkins hasn’t hit a dead arm period after logging very few innings the past two years. The good news though is he actually looks to be getting stronger down the stretch. Hopefully he can avoid those nasty brick walls today.

Couple notes

-Mauer getting a much deserved day off.
-Gomez getting a much earned day off.
-Our “power” guys 4-7 would do well to put some crooked numbers in today.

Our "power" guys would

do well to produce, period. Morneau’s put up a homer and a couple of doubles recently, but he’s still swinging at some bad pitches, like he’s forcing it. A homer from time to time from someone else in the 5, 6, 7 holes would be nice, too.

by Jesse on Aug 27, 2008 4:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agree

Morneau has been pressing for sure. He’s been swinging at a lot of bad pitches because he’s not convinced anyone behind him will produce. And why should he he has no reason to. Morneau could easily have 100 BB this season, but 1. That’s not really his style and 2. He knows with the current group that’s not necessarily going to equate to more runs.

Think he'll ever replicate anything close to that?

I don’t really. Kind of started thinking hard about it and it was probably mostly the perfect storm of having Mauer in front of him and Morneau and Hunter behind him. Cuddyer is a flawed hitter for sure, but it didn’t matter because pitchers were more willing to take their chances with him than the I’ll crush anything version of Morneau and the always free swinging Hunter behind him.

I think he's capable of it.

He just has to stay healthy, first. Second, he needs to find a way to get back into the lineup. Third, I want to say he needs to be more aggressive, but the reality is that he might need to be more patient and pick the right pitches to swing at. He gets fooled a lot.

Since we didn't put this Seattle team in it's place during earlier matchups

Playing against the Twins is like a totally different season for them. Where they can pretend to play like a team, support each other, have dramatic comebacks and fight to the bitter end. This is what we get for being Minnesota nice. Meanwhile Chicago spends every night being assholes and putting every other pitch in the bleachers…

Okay

I eat all of my words (until Buscher makes a bad defensive play).

That's okay

I thought it was a bad move too, but sometimes it works out anyways.

Alright boys

This is the point where you say enough is enough, rack it up and put this one out of reach!!! See it’s okay to take out your frustrations on last place teams.

Three righthanders due up

I think it will be Guerrier. He was warming last inning.

Hey, a chance for Perkins to go 12-3.

Excellent inning for the Twins.

Now let’s pull this one out boys!

I’m off to bed guys. Win Twins!!

Let’s hope Guerrier is “back to normal”.

Well we've been losing all series

Actually I don't fault Gardy much for his pitching selections

but I think he might be overmanaging a bit by using Guerrier for just one hitter.

Man, not sure if that was the right move, bringing in Guardado there. Oh well, hindsight 20/20 and all that.

Gardy over managing again

Ruiz isn’t really all that slow, and you don’t pinch run for him (especially with the weakest hitter on the team) unless your positive he wont hit again.

Raul Ibanez swings on a 3-0 count to end the game

Would have been ball 4, Raul.

Thank god we didn't get swept

OK, 3-4 so far on this road trip. If we can grab 2 in Oakland and at least split in Toronto we’ll be 7-7, which I’ll take.

Pretty tough to split

a three game series. It is four in Oak-town, a day off and then three in Canada.

Here's a trade...

that would hurt and help both teams—Kubel for Ibanez. Both of them tortured the other team.

One blown save from a series win on the road

Not as bad as it seemed at the time. Then again, even back waxing isn’t so bad after it’s over.

Great game....

I had to listen to it in the car on the way back from a retirement party. Perkins pitched well and all though Gardado made it a nail bitter, I knew Nathan would slam the door in their faces. Lets get out of Seattle and into a happier place. I am glad to see Morneau is out of his slump and that Mauer got a night off. He could probably use a few more. Anyway Perkins gave me a fantasy win so I am a happy camper sitting here having a victory drink. Go Twins…
