September call ups?

Do we call up a catcher for insurance when we rest Mauer?  Do we call up bullpen help to rest some arms for the post season? (You all know the Twins are going to make the post season, don't you.)  Do we call up some utility players so that the G. has some options on the bench the rest of the way?  What do you think?

Here are my September call ups:

1.  Luke Hughes - he has had a good year at Roc. and deserves a shot at some playing time and AB's in the bigs.

2.  Garrett Jones - 21 home runs should be enough to get a bench spot in Sept.

3.  Jason Pridie - utility outfielder/pinch runner

4.  Ryan Jorgensen - insurance catcher

5.  Bobby Korecky - 25 saves could mean a few innings here and there in the bullpen

6.  Anthony Swarzak - lets see how good he is in the bullpen or a spot start.

7.  Tim Lahey - gives the team another bullpen arm and G. more options

These are my opinions ...lets hear yours.

(This is my first post on this site so go easy on me.)

The only call-up I’m really partial about is Korecky coming up for bullpen reinforcements. Other than that…is LeCroy still with the organization? Veteran presence, imo.

Couple of quibbles

*_Garrett Jones:_ He has been raking since he got healthy, apparently he was dealing without a few minor injuries when the season started. However he’s no longer on the 40-man roster and it would seem frivolous to add him when he doesn’t figure in to the teams long term plans. To be fair though .324/.385/.565 in July and .344/.376/.667 in August is awfully sexy.
*_Ryan Jorgensen:_ Same story kind of. While he’s the veteran of the system it might be more likely that Butera is called up from AA because he’s more likely to serve as a future 3rd catcher. My money is on Butera if anyone.
*_Anthony Swarzak:_ While he’s certainly turned his season around in Rochester, I think the Twins will probably go with the hotter hand in Humber. Again he’s on the 40-man and as a lot more to prove than Swarzak at this point. If something opens up in the rotation next season, Humber would be vying hard for that spot.
*_Matt Macri_: He’ll likely be up as well as Tolbert to provide some depth in the infield. Not exactly having an impressive year, but he had a decent showing during his brief stint earlier this year, especially against left-handed pitching.

Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen with his sub 90's fastball.
Really gives a new definition to living vicariously through other people, don't it?

Some changes
  • Lahey Is going to Arizona, so he won’t be up.
  • I think the Twins will bring up Butera from New Britain rather than Jorgensen. Whomever they bring up, they have to put them on the 40-man roster, so what they do affects the offseason as well as the season itself. They have one slot left and will likely use it on Gardy’s favorite, who was named Best Catcher in the Eastern League by Baseball America.
  • The only sure thing on your list to me is Pridie. Jones might get called up, but the Twins have limited space on the 40-man roster and already must add a catcher. Pridie is already on the 40-man roster. Jones was taken off when he cleared waivers before the season. Plus Pridie plays defense. If it’s between Jones and Pridie, it’s a no-brainer.
  • As mentioned, Tolbert will be added, he’s already been named.
  • I doubt Hughes will be taken ahead of Macri. Macri has a better chance of fitting in at this stage. Macri is already on the 40-man roster and he’s been at AAA for more than a year, whereas Hughes has been there for a couple of months. Hughes will probably go down to the Instructional league to work on his footwork at third.
  • The Twins are more likely to bring up Philip Humber than Anthony Swarzak. Hiumber is already on the 40-man roster. And, as good as Swarzak has pitched since his call-up, Humber has pitched better in the second half. Also, Humber has spent two years in AAA to Swarzak’s two months.
  • Bobby Korecky is also on the 40-man and could help out, so I expect him to be added as well.

Call-ups

If a team is contending, the call-ups need to have a skill that can contribute. Someone who can pinch run. Steal a base. Get a key strikeout. In the case of a catcher, you just need to be a catch-and-throw guy.

Call-ups

The Twins have three or four vacancies on the 40-man. Guys on the 40-man are far more likely to be recalled than guys not on it. From Beer Bear’s original posting, I am nearly certain that neither Lahey nor Swarzak will be recalled. I doubt that Jones will get recalled either, but he has hit well in the second half so there is a chance.

Hughes most likely won’t be recalled. He has only played about 40 games at Rochester. He is not on the 40-man, is going to Arizona, and has only been okay at Rochester. I too think Macri will be recalled—he is versatile and did play quite well while up with the Twins.

Korecky should be a sure thing. He’s on the 40-man and has pitched very well for the last two weeks. I also think Humber will be recalled. He has pitched both as a starter and reliever and has been very good the last month.

As for a third catcher, I think the Twins are looking outside of their organization for someone who is a decent receiver and might be around next year as a backup in waiting. Morales’ ankle injury is related the the ugly incident in Chicago last year. He may never be 100% again and he might be taken off the 40-man this off-season.

As someone said above, the types of call-ups vary depending on each team’s position. With the Twins contending it’ll be guys that can help rather than young talent that the Twins want to take a look at.

I don’t see Hughes up simply because it doesn’t seem like the right move for a playoff team, and I think they’d rather wait a little bit.

I see the following at least:

Brian Bass
Bobby Korecky
Matt Macri
Matt Tolbert (DL)

I think maybe Jones since he has been decent and then a catcher too. I really don’t see anybody outside of Tolbert and maybe Macri getting a lot of playing time.

I think that the Twins currently have 4 spots on the 40 man roster to add guys. I personally hope they bring up as many people as possible for flexibility. The Twins seem to be playing a lot of tight ballgames lately and it would be nice to have the flexibility of having a Pridie or Tolbert on the bench to run for someone and then still having Everett, Macri, etc to come in for defense in the late innings. I also hope Jones gets a shot because he is a guy that has been up before and he could potentially play some first base and allow Morneau to get a DH and break.

Here are who I hope they call up:
Tolbert
Macri
Pridie
Jones
Bass
Korecky
Humber
3rd Catcher (Buter, Jorgensen)

Four spots?

You’re right. according to the Twins site, the Twins have 17 pitchers and 19 position players on the active 40-man roster.

Still, the Twins don’t want to add guys to the 40-man roster if they don’t have to. They have to carefully add guys whom they need to protect from the Rule 5 draft after the season. If they put a guy on the 40-man just for this September and then need to take him off the 40 man in order to protect a more valuable resource for future Septembers and Octobers, they’d be taking a big risk.

Some guys to consider protecting after the year: Plouffe, Swarzak, Duensing, Mullins, Tolleson, Lahey, Lis, Fox, Portes. They might open a few more spots up through free agency (ahem: Everett, Punto, Guardado, Reyes). But it’s always a challenge protecting everyone they need to protect. And they like to leave a few spots open for potential free agents/rule 5 players as needed in the offseason.

It is a lot easier for teams to then pick up a guy off waivers than the Rule 5. The need to keep a guy on your major league roster for a full year is a big deterrent from selecting him in the Rule 5 draft, especially if he’s a fringe-type player like Jones. But if they just pick a guy up on waivers, there’s very little risk for that team. So if the Twins never have to take a guy off the 40-man roster, they never need to pass him through waivers.

The Twins won’t add guys to the 40-man yet this year unless they absolutely have to. They can get by with calling up guys on the 40-man with the exception of catcher: Pridie, Tolbert, Macri, Humber, and Korecky. Incidentally, this means probably not Brian Bass, since the Twins have already passed him through waivers so there’s little risk of him being taken in the Rule 5 draft.

Well the Twins can Demote Oswaldo Sosa off the 40 Man Roster

Shouldnt get Taken in the Rule 5 Draft, This Guy has Some Serious Controll issues

by Tony_O on Aug 28, 2008 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Not the Rule 5 I'd be worried about

To take him off the 40-man, you have to send him through waivers. Teams can claim him at will in the hopes that he turn it around in another organization, no strings attached.

Waivers

I agree that there is always an issue with adding/removing guys from the 40 man roster but I don’t really think many of the guys we are talking necessarily have much of a future anyways.

No one claimed Jones at the beginning of the year when they had the opportunity and it is my expectation that Jones isn’t going to make the opening day roster next year and will need to go through waivers again next year anyways to go to AAA. Bass I think is expendable with Humber, Duensing, Mulvey and Swarzak seeming not too far off. As for any of the 3rd catchers they would add, I would think they would be looking at adding Butera after this year anyways and I don’t think it would be a huge loss to lose Jorgensen or Christy.

I'd

rather now see a bunch of guys just to add guys. I’d rather not see Pridie, because I just think Gardy would try to use him over what we have when he doesn’t need to.

by Twins Territory on Aug 27, 2008 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Special skills

One of the factors in call-ups is adding somebody who offers a specialty. The Twins have used Adam Everett as a pinch-runner twice in the past week. Calling up Pridie to be a defensive replacement and pinch-runner would make sense, even if he got zero at-bats.

Another specialist could be Kielty. He has lots of big-league experience as a pinch-hitter and could be used in that role, but he would have to come on the 40-man.

I continue to stick to my prediction that the Twins will sign a free-agent catcher or trade for one like Jamie Burke (the Mariners have three). With Morales’ career in jeopardy, they need a backup-in-waiting for next year as well as a third catcher for the last month.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 28, 2008 6:25 AM EDT reply actions

Catcher

It makes sense. I’m sure there’s a veteran out there who has cleared waivers and can be had for a fringe prospect at the deadline—someone like Damien Miller or Chad Moeller. THe prospect would be a guy who would otherwise need to be protected but who doesn’t really fit into the Twins plans—someone like Matt Fox or Henry Sanchez.
