Livan To the Rockies

Right-hander Livan Hernandez is on the verge of joining the Rockies.

Hernandez, designated for assignment by the Twins, was claimed off waivers by the Rockies on Tuesday, according to major-league sources. At least one other National League club also claimed Hernandez, sources said. The Rockies were awarded the pitcher because they had the worst record of any of the claiming teams.

The teams now have 48 hours to work out a trade. If no agreement is reached, the Twins likely will let Hernandez go to the Rockies without receiving a player in return. It is unclear whether the Twins can pull back Hernandez after removing him from their 40-man roster.

The Twins do not want to pull back Hernandez. Their priority is to escape the remaining obligation on Hernandez's contract — the balance of his $5 million salary, plus as much as $2 million in incentives.

The defending NL champion Rockies need a pitching boost as they attempt to rally from an eight-game deficit in the NL West. They have been scrambling to fill the back of their rotation all season, and their 4.81 team ERA is third worst in the majors.

Hernandez, 33, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA for Minnesota. He won six of his first seven starts but has struggled in recent months, allowing five runs or more in eight of his last 13 starts.

First – Did you pull this from Rosenthal? If so (or pulled from elsewhere), it is probably best to cite your source or at least summarize instead of using Control-C then Control-V. Plagiarism isn’t exactly looked upon with kindness.

Second – and more to the point of the post, does anyone think the Twins would be willing to pick up some $$ to get a low-level prospect? I mean, we got Macri under eerily similar circumstances…

It's not plagiarism exactly

It’s unfair use of a published text. It is still an offense, though, but really, only this website would get in trouble.

But, good form is to cite the source, quote a paragraph or less than 20% of the whole and let the user click through to read the entire article.

At least, that’s my understanding.

I hope we get a high A ball infielder for the aging Livo.

Good Lord

Pull the cob out of your ass GAC. Seeing how he put a link up there, you can find out for yourself where it came from if youre so worried about it.

The link (and pink) wasn't there...

when I posted my comment. And I was reading Rosenthal earlier so it wasn’t a matter of not knowing where it came from. My point was that Rosenthal’s employers would probably prefer that content they paid for was properly notated. It is the 2nd time in a week I have seen someone on this site paste someone else’s work w/o citation. Late last week, I was reading the Strib and then checked this site and saw some of Joe C’s work verbatim, no credit given (don’t think it was Tony).

I let it slide before, but as I appreciate the work the site’s editors do, I would prefer they not take heat for something a poster does. When you consider the acrimony given to bloggers by a lot of the mainstream media, it really isn’t a good idea to copy their intellectual property.

I assume it was an honest mistake. He (or Jesse/et al) went back and changed it. That is why you now see a link and credit given. And that was all the comment was intended to do.

I went in and changed it.

I know Tony certainly wasn’t trying to claim this as his own, but we do need to site sources when we copy and paste. I’d like to make that a standing order, but that’s not really something I can enforce…people will write what they want to write. If I find something that’s been copied and pasted I will try to add the link.

!

Eh, I personally consider the link to source material good enough at least, though I find it would be good if the head sentence was more like “Right-hander Livan Hernandez is on the verge of joining the Rockies according to Ken Rosenthall” with “according to Ken Rosenthal” the linked text. But that’s just style issues.

Thanks for the linky link! Way to have the quick trigger finger…

Livan + Coors

Letting Livan battle it out in Coors Field will be downright ugly. The park factor on hits in Coors is the 3rd highest in the Majors this year, and 20% higher than that in the Metrodome. Livan was already giving up hits at a historic rate – who knows what horrors he will cast upon the world now?

Be sure to bring eyeball soap if visiting the Denver area in the near future.

It sounds like...

we won’t be getting any AAA player or anything. Word is that the Rockies want to simply pay his contract for the rest of the year (1.5 million) and the Twins want a player in return. The Cardinals and Mets also claimed him, but the Rockies have the worst record.

Yeah

Yeah, they don’t HAVE to give us anything. We aren’t pulling him back off waivers.

Free innings. Get'cher free innings.

the Rockies want to simply pay his contract for the rest of the year (1.5 million)

That’s a pretty good simply for the Twins. One way of looking at it is they are making more than $1 million by having Liriano on the roster. Almost like ‘cisco is paying THEM to pitch.

Almost as if he never left

Livan Hernandez as a Twin: 5.48 ERA, 1.63 WHIP
Twins’ staff since his departure: 5.19 ERA, 1.48 WHIP
