span SPAN! Span?
Seriously, what are the Twins going to do with Span? A better question might be what are the Twins gonna do with Gomez? I like Gomez's defensive capabilities and his ability to fly around the bases (although he seems to have lost his nerve/ability to steal lately), but really I think we all know now that Span would be little or no drop off defensively and an incredible improvement offensively. Do the Twins send Gomez down? probably not because we won't be hurting his development by having him be more of a bench player and he's a valuable pinch runner/ defensive replacement as needed. I think with the rationality the Twins have been showing by cutting dead weight they just might make the decision to bench Gomez.
The big problem as we all know is that Cuddyer will be coming back hopefully by the end of the week and that leaves us with and extra outfielder. IMO Gomez has to be the odd man out, it is really the only move that makes sense unless Cuddyer comes back and immediately slumps. Gomez has a line of .406/.424/.438 since being moved to #9 in the batting order so he has been effective there and maybe the move has helped him relax a bit at the plate. It is a very small sample size and given a choice I'd much rather see Cuddyer behind the plate than Gomez.
So what should the Twins do now?
Bench Gomez, when we're facing a tough lefty start Cuddy at DH, slide Gomez back to right and start Gomez in center. Gomez will also be used to give Span and Young breaks as needed.,
As far as the batting order that will have to be fluid we have our first 4 fairly set up in Span, Punto, Mauer, Morneau. Gomez should still bat 9th when playing and Cuddyer will probably bat somewhere from 5th to 7th when he's playing.
Roster moves? I say we get rid of Bass. Bonser can do what Bass has been doing to the same effectiveness and I'd much rather have Bonser coming in when our bullpen is depleted than Bass. Bonser just plain is a better pitcher statistics be damned. Plus Bass will probably pass through waivers better than Bonser would so it just seems like the right move at this time. If our bullpen starts to get burnt out we could bring another reliever up from AAA. I'd like to keep Ruiz as a right handed option off the bench and see what he might be able to do here and there playing DH. I know we've talked about some of this stuff lately but it will be a very interesting weekend to see what the Twins do. If they stop having Span play daily they're foolish especially after the day he had today and I just can't see it happening.
So, agree disagree? What do you think the Twins should do? Or maybe more importantly what will they do?

I think
Gardy gave Span high praise after the game today. Asked what Span has done wrong…Gardy could not come up with an answer and said that he has learn a lot from the first time he was up this year and has adjusted well.
It sounds to me that Gardy wants and is going to keep Span in the lineup.
Then again, Cuddy could have a setback. Cuddy has had these nagging injuries for a year and a half now. So I am not going to really worry about the roster move and the lineup move until that bridge passes.

4 outfielders
I don’t see much of a problem having 5 outfielders. We don’t really have a DH (read someone who can’t play a position) and Delmon, Gomez, Span, Kubel and Cuddy can be rotated through the 3 outfield spots and DH depending on the matchup. This would give all of them all plenty of ABs and give Gardy a good PH to use in late game situations.

With the way Gardenhire has been complaining about the overuse of the bullpen I seriously doubt Bass will be going anywhere.

I don't get that
Why not send him down (through waivers) and bring up a fresh arm? He’s clearly not ready for tight situations. And we don’t need two long guys (Boof and Bass). We need another quality short guy to ultimately replace Neshek. Bass ain’t it.

At the beginning of the week
We were talking about how we can’t expect guys to come in and pitch well when they haven’t been used in a week. Yes, Gardy used the bullpen a lot this week but he seems to be using the same guys too much not so much the bullpen as a whole too much. I still say dump Bass and see if the bullpen can handle it for a few weeks until September call ups so we can keep Ruiz on the roster and see what he’s got.

Except . .
Bass and Bonser are pretty much filling the same roll in the bullpen.
Ruiz is a right handed power option off the bench that we don’t have. So while neither of them have MAJOR value, I still say it makes more sense to keep Ruiz up for a late game pinch hitter than to have Bass up here splitting mop up duty with Bonser.

5 guys for 4 positions
isn’t such a bad situation, especially when there is a 2 lefty/3 righty split, and 2 guys who can play center field. Gardenhire just needs to show some creativity in matchups.
On Span—he’s been terrific. Really much better than I thought he could be, and really high quality plate appearances. What will be interesting is the off-season, and whether the Twins will sell high on him.

There's about a zero percent chance that the Twins will trade Span
They’ve believed in his talent the whole way, promoting him when he hasn’t been hitting very well, so there’s really no reason to believe that they think this is unsustainable. If anyone gets pushed out of the picture, it’s Kubel. (For historical reference, see: Ortiz, David.)

Kubel
Unfortunately, I think you are right. This isn’t just a problem the Twins are going to have this year – all 5 players are technically under club control through 2010. It will be interesting to see how proactive the Twins are in changing that.

Gomez -> Bench
I’d assume Gomez will get starts in center against lefties, and other than that, he’ll be a pinch runner and defensive replacement. They’d probably rather he play every day in Rochester, but he’s more useful to the big club than Ruiz (without Gomez, there’s no decent CF backup, and Cuddyer’s bat offset’s Ruiz’s), and in a pennant chase, that probably trump’s Gomez’s development.
So, when Cuddyer comes back, where does he hit in the batting order? Do you put him right back in the 5-spot ahead of Kubel, just to split up the lefties, or see if he hits first before moving your second-best power bat further down the order?

Seems unlikely that Gomez will be completely relegated to a platoon role
When he’s been hitting .350+ since being moved to the 9th spot in the order.
I bet he’ll start against some RHP with either a Span-Gomez-Cuddyer OF (Kubel DH) or a Kubel-Gomez-Span OF (Cuddyer DH.) It’s not like Delmon has been setting the world on fire and needs to be in the lineup, plus Gomez has a lot more defensive value than Delmon.
If Gomez stops hitting again and Delmon starts hitting better, then we could see him in a straight up platoon, but I doubt we’ll see it until then.

Five outfielders
If we get rid of Bass, which I recommend, it would just be to upgrade to somebody better, like Humber.
So the odd man out is Ruiz, who is no great loss and has plenty of options left. He’ll be back in three weeks when rosters expand anyway.
I don’t think you just send Gomez to the bench full time. Between the Dh spot and the three outfield spots, that’s four spots for five guys. Gardy will probably play the hot hand and mix guys up according to match-ups. The two guys out of five who will play everyday at this point are Span and Cuddyer. There’s plenty of work left for three guys and two spots if you use platoons and what not.

Bench him or demote him
If they’re going to make a run, it’s time to sit Gomez the vast majority of games. He’s absolutely killing the team with horrible AB’s (18 K in 82 AB in July compared to 22 TB – BRUTAL), and hasn’t even been a threat on the bases (hasn’t had a steal since June 30, and the team only has 5 steals since the ASB).
When I assumed the team wasn’t going anywhere, and this was a transitional year, I thought nothing of leaving the kid out there and letting him learn. Now, however, not only is the team still very much in the hunt and there is a better option on the roster, it’s time to either bench him or send him to Rochester to play every day.

How can Gomez be killing this team?
It’s far from dead. Gomez plays good defense and hits 9th. (And has been relatively “hot” since moving to the end of the order.) In the event that the Twins still need runs towards the end of the game, you can pinch hit for him after he’s only been up to hit 2-4 times.
Gomez isn’t killing this team any more than Harris or Delmon is killing this team.

The difference is that there isn’t a better option for Harris because the front office decided not to spend money and make a move at the deadline. Nor is there a better option for Young, because it certainly isn’t Gomez. Gomez should be at the bottom of the outfield pecking order, and should not be seeing the field unless two above him are hurt.

Harris should only be used as a third baseman
Think the bullpen is a problem? Want to avoid using it? Put Everett at SS, Punto at 2B, and Harris at 3B. Buscher is better than Lamb, but Lamb was a complete disaster and Buscher is merely very bad. Want to do even better? Get Delmon’s bumbling ass off the field.
Also, Cuddyer is a well below average fielder and unless he’s actually hitting (which seems to happen once every three years or so) he’s a pretty bad player, too. It’s far from obvious that Gomez should just be glued to the bench or sent to Rochester.

Caveat
Harris could be used as a SS or 2B, but only after you pinch hit for Punto or Everett. This team’s defense is just outrageously bad when Harris is playing SS. It improves to merely bad when Harris is used more reasonably.

Boy, I’m sorry, but 4 more total bases than strikeouts in a month is beyond pathetic. Nobody fears Gomez at the plate. All pitchers have to do is throw something within 3 feet of the zone, and he’ll flail at it. He needs a good two weeks off to pull his head out of his ass and figure out if he wants to learn patience and how to hit.
He should be doing nothing but watching videos of Ichiro and taking notes.

He should be doing nothing but watching videos of Ichiro and taking notes.
Ichiro is the last person you would want a player to emulate. He is a one-of a kind player. Try to teach that to Gomez at this stage and you might as well release him now, ‘cause you’re only going to screw him up.

Ubelmann’s assessments of Twins players on this thread:
Delmon: “bumbling ass”
Cuddyer: “pretty bad player”
Lamb: “complete disaster”
Busher: “merely very bad”
Yikes. Are you a little grouchy from having to watch the Twins drop 2/3?
I’m surprised Gomez has batted .350 plus since he got moved down, because he still looks very lost at the plate. He is a sucker for the high fastball, that’s for sure.

SSST
Small sample size theater. Ubelman as much as anyone should see that and not use that as a defense of Gomez. He’s had a decent past couple of weeks. If he keeps it up then we should keep slotting him 9 and playing him regularly. I still say he needs to be the bottom man on the totem pole unless Cuddyer comes up and can’t quite hack it.

Adding Cuddyer makes the defense worse
Making the defense worse is going to mean more Bass and more Bonser. We can’t get Neshek back, but we can do things to avoid going to the bullpen as often. Cuddyer has a flashy arm, but I think that most people don’t realize just how much his range hurts his value.

True
I was just pointing out that Gomez having a few good offensive games isn’t reason enough to keep him playing and with your SSST that you run early in the season you if anyone should see that. I’m honestly ok with keeping Gomez and Span in the outfield as much as possible for defensive purposes. However I still stand by that I would rather have the Twins DFA Bass and keep Ruiz up no matter what the Twins are planning for the lineups.
I understand Cuddyer’s range is an issue but he has a strong and respected arm that holds runners often. It may not make up for it but I do like having Cuddy’s arm out there to get assists/hold runners. That + his bat in my mind can make up for having him in the outfield vs. Gomez.

He’s like Greg Gagne on the good Twins teams. His defense is well above average, which offsets a below-average bat. As long as you don’t expose him too much by putting in the lead-off role or insist on hitting hi in the ninth, he should not hurt the team. I would say, all things considered, he prevents many more runs than Delmon, for example. So even though he doesn’t create as many runs as Delmon, he’s at least as valuable to this team’s success. Defense is as important as offense. Some stat heads don’t get that.

Gomez has tremendous tools but he's been brutal overall
Unless he learns how to control all his athleticism he’s kind of a liability…
Outfield defense: His range is outstanding and he’s certainly saved a lot of runs, but unless he learns when to contain himself he’ll continue getting himself hurt. Also his arm still needs to be more consistent.
At the plate: Obviously the patience and pitch selection his brutal. He still needs to learn how to bunt. And since he’s a righthanded hitter I’d much rather see him working towards driving the ball and become an annual 20 triple guy.
On the bases: The biggest trick for him is getting to 1st but as we’ve seen he still has a lot to learn as far as the nuances of base stealing. He should be stealing 40 bases a year with that speed and he probably wont even manage 30 this year.
Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen with his sub 90's fastball.
Really gives a new definition to living vicariously through other people, don't it?

It's frustrating to watch
And I honestly don’t know whether he will be able to make adjustments. But I think a lot of it is psychological. He seems to be the easiest out with the bases loaded. And he’s not such a bad hitter with no one on base. He fought off a tough pitch with two outs and nobody on in the 4th and got a single. I just wonder why he can’t do that when the pressure is on.
If he just slowed it down a little more and tried to make contact rather than trying to drive the ball, he’d be much more successful. But he’s got such a high motor, he might never learn to slow down and let the game come to him, as Span does.

good insight but I wonder if he will listen
I have to assume that the Twins are telling him to slow things down. They did that w/ Casilla last season and we are seeing the results this season. He needs to be ready to listen or it just won’t matter, and I don’t know if he will listen while starting every game.
Just make contact Gomez and use that god given speed to pressure the D.
