Game 145: Royals @ Twins
Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins, Sep 10, 2008 8:10 PM EDT
Pregame...formatted for your viewing pleasure
Minnesota hasn't won back-to-back contests since August 21 and 22, which to me means they're due. With Kevin Slowey starting things do look good, as he's 2-0 in two starts against the Royals this season, including a complete game and a combined 1.23 ERA. In fact, since July 28 his ERA is just 2.61, which is an impressive feat over eight starts, even considering that ERA is a poor judge for a pitcher on its own merits. One interesting tidbit about Slowey: every pitch he throws has more velocity to it this year as compared to 2007...except his curve (-0.9 mph). Fastball (+0.2), slider (+1.9) and change (+2.0) are all quicker.
For the Royals tonight it's Kyle Davies, who turned 25 yesterday. After some early success this season (3-0 in his first four starts, 24.2 innings, 1.46 ERA) opposing hitters have caught up with him, but in spite of that he might just turn in his best season as a pro yet. In his fourth year, Davies will likely set career bests in innings pitched, ERA and maybe even wins if things go his way the rest of the month. But with his track record including walks, hits and endurance, the Twins hopefully won't be giving him too much help in those departments. The righty offers a decent fastball, a slider, curve and modest changeup.
My guess for the KC lineup: DeJesus (LF), Aviles (SS), Guillen (RF), Butler (DH), Teahen (3B), Olivo (C), Gload (1B), Callaspo (2B), Gathright (CF)
For the Twins, it'll be the same lineup for the fifth time in a row: Span (RF), Casilla (2B), Morneau (1B), Kubel (DH), Young (LF), Buscher (3B), Punto (SS), Gomez (CF)

Yes, let's go Jays!
I love this time of year, where I cheer for the Twins and also for whichever team is playing the one we want to lose.
The Jays
Have been feasting on the central this year, and they have Halladay going tonight. I’m feeling pretty good about tonight (knocks on wood).
Just shut up.
Please! Thanks to that comment, the Twins will give up four runs in the last three innings. If you say any more….
Slowey might just die right on the mound.

This doesn't have anything to do with the posts above
But did anybody notice the slash stats for the Twins middle infielders? Punto and Casilla are almost identical—Casilla is .340/.399/.739, Punto is .341/.399/.740—both are respectable, but not outstanding. Punto gets far more flack here and at BYTO and the strib than Casilla has this year.

Casilla
is 23 and a developing player still. his defense is superior to Punto’s as well. Punto is having an alright year and I’m ok with him at short because I don’t know that we have a better option other than possibly Adam Everett who seemed to be doing alright after coming off the DL.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
I am loving your lineup predictions Jesse!
no catcher!!! this will be a fun game! Did both Reddog, Mauer, and the new kid all hit the DL at the same time?
haha….
What's with Casilla
Making a running pivot? I thought he needed to last night, but he had plenty of room and time tonight to turn the DP without getting acrobatic.

both ahead by 2 in the middle innings. Sox are facing a better pitcher and a better lineup.

Slowey in some trouble
In the fifth. Gets Buck, so there’s no advance. Now, two out and a runner on third.

1-2-3 in the fifth. ChiSox still lead 2-0. The Jays have the heart of their order up in the sixth.

Epic Duel between the Grit Masters
Doc is definetely number 1 on the Grit chart in my mind, but Burhle is pretty high up there as well. He can certainly be a leader for this team over the last two weeks here.

Jays offense doing a "twins"
you know scoring and winning the night before and then not showing up the next night
5-0
On a squeeze. I doubt the Sox bully will melt down and they may not be needed at all.

Buehrle is also doing a good job
On his way to a 10-hit shutout. So far the Jays have made three errors and have had two batters stink it up, Bautista and Lind. 0-6 with five Ks.

Davies is certainly an enigma
He’s everywhere with his pitches in terms of control and pitch selection. Twins hitters sometimes have a hard time being patient enough or even recognizing when they are going to see that fastball down the middle.

Well yea
Him and Crain have the stuff to dominate, but they just need to pitch like it more. They back off too often when they need to just go in and attack with their filthy stuff. The problem has been that sometimes Major League hitters hit well placed 95+mph fastballs a long way. They need to be both need to be more resilient when that happens, particularly Crain.

I agree with all that
But Bonser had never been a reliever until this year. It would be too much to ask him to save the bullpen and the season this year, but he could come back next year and be really valuable to the team. Also, with the increased velocity and hard curve, I am sure somebody would want him and give up more than a middling prospect.

I was at the last game Liriano pitched...
Think it was the Tigers opener. Anyways, after Liriano finished the 7th with like 90 pitches, the Twins had a long inning at the dish. Mijares was warming up and I was excited to see his debut live. I was prepping my friends for him saying that his fastball has reached the upper 90’s at times. Anyways, turned out to be a bullpen session. Liriano came back in gave up another donger and walked a guy and then had to be lifted. Again, none of the call ups made an appearence even though it was a bigger blow out than tonight.
Like I said, Gardy has some series phobias and strict guidelines when managing his bullpen. Might be part of the blame as to why they’ve been so terrible after Neshek. Gardy’s inability to work creatively with the guys he has…
