Game 151: Twins @ Indians
Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians, Sep 16, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Pregame (12 games remaining)
While Kevin Slowey's start last night was far from bad, the two homers he allowed did more than enough damage to take out the Twins. In an attempt to rebound against a getting-better-but-still-inferior Cleveland squad, the Twins turn to Francisco Liriano. Liriano is still getting better, and he keeps getting great results. He's now thrown over 1000 pitches in 2008, with fewer signs of trouble as time goes along. Tonight, the Twins need him to continue to locate his fastball, and to stay on his gameplan. Even though he's shown the ability to work himself out of jams in recent starts, he'll be much more efficient if he can pitch the way he wants. He still has a tendency to get into innings with large pitch counts, and that's exactly what this team doesn't want right now.
The home team is sending out Zach Jackson, a 25-year old lefty. Jackson throws a fastball around 90, as well as a slider, cutter, changeup and an occasional curve. In 2004 he was a first-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, making his debut in their farm system at 21. By the following season the Jays had rapidly promoted him to triple-A, where he posted a 5.13 ERA in 47 innings; he wasn't very impressive in general. After being dealt to Milwaukee with Gabe Gross and Dave Bush for Lyle Overbay (and don't forget Ty Taubenheim!) in December of '05, he made his MLB with the Brewers that following summer. A couple of months ago he became a throw-in piece in the trade that sent C.C. Sabathia to the Brewers, and after the Indians dealt another starter (Paul Byrd), they recalled Jackson, who made his Indians debut on August 14th. In his six starts with Cleveland this season he's 0-3 in 36.1 innings and a 5.70 ERA, with 46 hits, 20 strikeouts and five walks.

A really lousy inning for Liriano, too
The run of homers won’t seem to stop. This is a real problem at this point in the season.

His fastball has life
but he’s really relying on the changeup.

Yes!
I didn’t have my glasses on and thought it was top of the 8th for a second and we were down by three. I’ll take an extra inning and being down by 1 instead. Love you, Juan Rincon.

Oh man, it's top of the 6th, not the 7th
Ha, Tony O, you magnificent bastard! I just got yet another inning back!

our boy has no patience
maybe you don’t want to reach for a down and out slider when your man can’t hit the strike zone

V-Mart not much better than K-Mart
E-2, take your base, Brian.

I just want to keep it inside 3 games so that white sox series isn't meaningless
Not looking super possible right now. Cleveland’s a good team, though. We’re not losing to a bunch of scrubs.

5 pitches, 2 outs
for Matt Guerrier. Can we possibly get out of the 7th inning unscathed?

Two on, one out
Morneau at the plate. Result: TIE GAME!
MVP! MVP! MVP!

if only he could have driven in at least one
in the previous AB, maybe the Twins wouldn’t have lost this one but I’d love to see him be MVP
If the Twins play in October, he has a great chance
Liriano off the hook
The offense DID bail him out. Now—win the game!

Everybody Comes out of the Woodwork
as soon as we tie the game, i swear i saw tumbleweeds earlier tonight
LOL
Was it Killebrew
that used to swing at intentional balls one and maybe even two times, just to dare the pitcher to pitch to him?
Or was it Carew?

the wheels are really coming off the Bettancourt wagon

For at least 75% of pitchers
You can’t tell from year to year what will happen. Betancourt was great last year, this year awful. You could say the same about Guerrier, Reyes, and a lot of others.

Sorry bro, I’ve got a Twins team I’m trying to cheer for

I'm twitching
more than Nathan right now with Eddie on the mound
Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen with his sub 90's fastball.

Wow
Mijares. That’s…something. I will never, ever understand why no Nathan in these situations, but I’ve learned not to expect it.

I don't understand
the ump’s strike zone. It has helped the Twins more than it hurt them, but it is either small or inconsistent.

3 games after the series
against KC, we’d all have to hope they don’t lose the division in those games like Detroit did a couple of years ago
