Minor League Report...January 10, 2009
With just a little over a month until the pitchers and catchers report, there isn't a lot going on for Twins fans. LaVelle E. Neal III reported that the Twins may, or may not, be in the hunt for Joe Crede...if he is healthy? He also reported that Nick Punto may play for Italy in the WBC and that it appears that Joe Mauer will not be with Team USA due to his pre-Christmas surgery.
On the field, there are only a couple teams with Twins players still playing now that the Winter Leagues are in the round robin segment of their playoffs. Aragua is currently fourth in a five team playoff with a 3-4 record, 2.0 games behind Cardenales de Lara with 9 games remaining. Last night Aragua lost to Zulia, 3-1, with the winning pitcher for Zulia someone we are familiar with, Heath Totten. Totten pitched 8.0 innings with 5 hits and only 1 run. Catcher Wilson Ramos was 1 for 3 and is the leading hitter for Aragua in the playoffs with a .385 average. Matt Tolbert has seen limited action, hitting .125. Frank Mata has also seen limited action while Yohan Pino had 2 appearances this week, pitching 2.0 shutout innings in each and getting the win in Wednesday's extra innings win. Jose Mijares has been excellent since joining the Tigres after their season started, however, had an off night on Wednesday when he allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and 1 run while getting no one out.
The Twins lone representative with Gigantes is lead off hitter Alexi Casilla, who is hitting .275 in the playoffs. Gigantes is in first place in the DWL round robin playoffs with a 7-3 record and a 1.0 game lead with 8 games remaining.
I don't know who is the top prospect in the Twins organization, however, seeing what Ramos has done the past two seasons and this winter in the VWL has to put his name into consideration for the best prospect the Twins have. He is considered an excellent defensive catcher who can hit for both average and power. He is only 21 and should begin 2009 at AA New Britain. Now that he is on the 40-man roster there is a chance that Ramos could join the Twins this September. A player who is a good enough hitter to be a DH when not catching could certainly be a huge addition for the Twins in their opening season in Target Field. I know we recently completed our rankings of Twins prospects, however, considering what he as done this winter causes me to ask.....Is there anyone in the organization with a higher ceiling?

Good stuff...
I agree with your sentiments about Ramos. He certainly has an upside and has done nothing in the last 24 months to cause us to have a doubt about his talent. His bat will probably get him to the bigs before his catching abilities do. Mauer is firmly planted as catcher and I think is signed for several more years. A strong hitting DH who also could catch would be a big plus for Gardy’s lineups. Again, good stuff… Ah.. spring training… I can smell the pine tar already.

Ramos
No need to push the guy too fast. Morales is still in the mix for a call-up in 2009…maybe increasing his own trade value if he stays healthy. The decision has to be made on Redmond. Yes, it would be mroe comfortable having Redmond in 2010 with Ramos as the next guy backing both up and DHing, although I imagine Ramos will work on his backstop skills in New Britain and also at Rochester.
This is not what one wants to hear, but see Drew Butera making the Twins (very briefly) before Ramos.

Aragua continues to slip...
…in the playoffs, losing yesterday to LaGuaira, 7-4. Aragua is now in fifth place in the five team playoff, 2.5 games out of first. Wilson Ramos was the only Twin seeing action as the catcher went 1 for 4. Gigantes won 6-5 in 11 innings with Alexi Casilla going 2 for 5 with a triple, rbi and walk. Julio DePaula pitched 1.2 innings of 1 hit relief with a walk and strikeout. Gigantes is now tied for first in the DWL playoffs. Over in Puerto Rico, Luis Matos had a big game leading Ponce to a 5-4 win yesterday, going 2 for 4 with 2 rbi for the division champion.

"Is there anyone in the organization with a higher ceiling?"
Hicks, maybe Morales, but I don’t disagree… between those three, that’s a pretty strong Top 4… and if Ben Revere is #4, things could be worse!

I had him behind Hicks
But he’s a close second. I don’t see him getting the call this year unless the Twins are beset by injuries. No need to start the clock before you need to. I would like to see him in the AFL, though.

Right around Hicks
Just above or just below, doesn’t matter to me. Ramos should start the year in New Britain and play in the AFL. Perhaps he gets a call to AAA or MLB if he dominates AA. He’ll pass Butera and Morales soon enough, but it may not be (or need to be) this year.

Ramos isn't eligible...
…for the AFL because he is Venezuelan. And I certainly am not saying that I expect him to get a September callup, only that if he should have a year in AA anything like he is having this winter…the Twins may want to take a look at him in September. He is already on the 40-man roster and a September callup doesn’t make any difference with the number of options used. Right now he is hitting over .300 with decent power in a league where the pitchers are primarily AA, AAA and some guys with major league experience. What happens later this year will depend a lot on how he does in AA and the Twins views of their needs in 2010, ie, will they resign Redmond again and is Morales finally healthy.

Ward
By the way, Zach Ward won Game 2 of his team’s first round playoff series in Puerto Rico with 5+ inninsg pitched. He is going to be pitching again in Game 6 on Friday.

Ward has a chance to help this year
I was stunned when he wasn’t protected. And I was relieved he wasn’t drafted. If he continues to pitch like he has consistently at AAA, he could be a good option for depth in the bullpen. If nothing else, I see a September call-up in 2009.

CMath...
…why do you think Ward has faltered the last part of the past two years? He wasn’t very good at Beloit two years ago after the trade. Then last year he really wasn’t as sharp the last third or so of the season. Do you think last year had anything to do with his being moved back and forth between the pen and starting? Or maybe he just wears down? Have you read or heard anything, because before the trade he was as good as anyone in the MidWest League. And last year he was nearly perfect out of the pen the first couple months of the season.

Innings
I haven’t heard anything, But I would guess it’s a question of use. Every guy is different in terms of what his arm can take. Some guys just struggle when used too often or inconsistently. I would guess Ward is one of those guys. I don’t know why they keep moving him back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen, but I hope they stop. Get him into a role in the Rochester bullpen and just keep him there. See how he responds to more regular work. He has the stuff and the make-up to be a good middle reliever, imho. His peripherals are very good, especially his GB%.

I think that is what happened last year...
…he was clearly doing an excellent job out of the NB pen. Then when none of the starters was able to do a good job, they tried everyone in the rotation…including Ward. So he got moved back and forth and never pitched as well as those first couple months. I totally agree with you on 2009…put him in the Rochester pen and let him pitch long/middle relief and see how he does.

Aragua had another big win...
…beating Lara 7-3. They are still in last place, but now only 2.0 games out of first. Wilson Ramos caught Jeff Farnsworth who threw the first 6.0 innings. Yohan Pino came on and got the save for 3.0 innings of shutout, 1 hit relief with 1 walk. Ramos went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored, double and rbi. Ramos is now hitting .381 in the playoffs. Over in the DWL, Alexi Casilla led Gigantes with a 3 for 6 night with a run scored, triple and rbi…although Gigantes lost 10-9. Casilla is hitting .296 in the playoffs.

Aragua won again...
…beating Lara, 5-2. The only Twin seeing action was Wilson Ramos who came on as a pinch hitter and caught the last innings of the game. Ramos was 0 for 1 with a walk and 1 run scored. With Aragua’s win, they remain in 5th place 2.0 games out of 1st in the round robin playoffs.
