Gagne....Dead(Not Literally)
Joe C on the Report
Apparently Gagne was Ready to sing a 1 year $3 Million Deal with the Twins...And Yet We broke of Talks.....Damnit.
The Twins have broken off their negotiations with free agent reliever Eric Gagne and appear to be focused on finding eighth-inning relief help through a trade.
What kind of trade? Not sure, but I’ll have more on the Gagne negotiations in tonight’s first editions.
Also, free agent third baseman Joe Crede worked out in front of scouts today in Arizona, and the Twins were expected to be in attendance.

Gagne
I will take the positive route and suggest that we may have dodged a bullet. I was pulling to sign him, but am not devastated that the team chose a different route. It makes me think of all of the things that we don’t know regarding these players and contract negotiations. Maybe there were injury concerns (Joaquin Benoit just went down for half a season, his name was mentioned earlier this year as a trade possiblity). Maybe it was attitude, that has always been an important factor for the Twins. Or just maybe there might be a good trade out there. One that involves a third baseman too.
Gagme is only mostly dead
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a negotiating ploy with Boras. He has one shot. Take it or leave it. If he leaves it, his client will be taking a minor league deal in May.

"...only mostly dead"
LOL. I would love to be a fly on the wall in any negotiation especially with Scott Boras. I have to think Boras is the slimiest car dealer you have ever met just from what I have read (ex: ARod opting out when he did; demanding the sun and the moon in any negotation). But then again, he usually gets his clients their money so he’s got that going for him…
I have more confidence in Boof settling in than Gagne bouncing back
They were saying last week that talks were stalling because Boras insanely wanted more than 1 year for him. I’m not disappointed by this at all.
I am worried that this will mean the Crede talks are going to be dead too.
Third.
I hate when people “third” things. But I did anyway. Boof was very unlucky last year, and I really haven’t given up on him being a decent back of the rotation starter yet. But he really seemed to settle into the role fairly well last year, and he obviously has the stuff. As a reliever, he was hitting 94 consistently; 94 came rarely when he was a starter. I’d definately take him over Gagne at this point. Gagne might have a higher upside, being he was the best relief pitcher in the world a few years ago, but most likely his realistic upside is a decent 8th inning guy, and even that seems like a stretch at this point. Boof, Crain, Mijares, all these guys have better stuff than him at this point, and at least one of them will be the solid 8th inning guy we need.
