Around SBN: Phil Mickelson Outshines Tiger Woods

Be sure to stop back to Christensen's blog as the night progresses, as he'll have more in tonight's first editions.

* With the Eric Gagne talks ceasing, the Twins are still looking for bullpen help. Luis Ayala came up. He had a bad 2008, and could be an inexpensive alternative.

* In regards to Joe Crede, the Twins would want to see him a bit more before thinking about leveling an offer. Which, really, is about as sound of an organizational decision as you can make in this situation.

No to Luis, and yes to Crede for me. With the Twins so low in their payroll right now, I’d say offer Crede a little under $5 million with incentives and hope to bring him in.

3-1 odds

I wouldn’t be against those odds. The two teams reportedly expressing interest are the Giants and Rangers. The Giants just signed Uribe and the Rangers are moving Young to third. Looks like the best fit is the Twins.

Yep.

I’d offer him a little less than $5 million with some incentives and see if we can lure him in. It won’t likely happen anytime soon if they need to watch him again.

Scratch that...

…it looks like Crede will be back on the field again tomorrow (Friday). Maybe he’ll impress again and the Twins will make a move?

No more relievers

I was in a bit of support of signing Gagne but it just seems like the Twins keep going for bigger and bigger reaches. I think a way around this would be to get a bargain player like Ben Sheets and sign him to a two year deal. He’s would step right in and likely be our 2nd best starter and we could move a guy like Perkins to the bullpen where he had been successful in the past. I know this gives us too many lefties but who cares, if they can get righties out like they’ve all 3 shown they can let ’em pitch.

If the Twins would make a move and sign him to say a 2 year contract as it sounds like he may have to settle for they would set up a dominant rotation with Sheets and Liriano having ace potential. Baker and Slowey being solid 2 type pitchers. Then Blackburn who would be one of the best 5th starters in the league.

Sheets contract would be off the books in time to sign baby Jesus as well.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

I'd love to see us make a move on Sheets

it’s a good buy-low environment. However, I still think Texas, Mets, etc will outbid us for him. Would be a very good move.

As for Joe Mauer, if we wait until after 2010 to sign him as a FA, we have no chance. Boston and NY will outbid us by $100M, easy.

Mauer

I agree about having to sign Mauer before 2010 I think they could do a signing and extend his contract now just without a large upfront bonus.

signing

If they signed Grede and a reliever for a total of 7 million or less then I would thing that a mauer extention with a 5 million signing bonus would make sense. …4 year 65 million extention with 5 million comming now.

If they don’t sign anyone else then an extention bonus of 10 million now on a 65 million extention for Mauer would go along way towards forgiving the front office for sucking this offseason.

I don’t know if 65 million is the right amount or not, but I’ve read Seth Stoh’s throw that number around and it sounds good to me.

Crede

i would be so happy if they signed Crede. I just don’t think Buscher/Harris is going to give our team a legitimate shot at the pennant. Even if Crede is a flop, I’d be happy that we tried to improve our team.
If we don’t spend anymore money this offseason, I would be highly in favor of extending Mauer’s contract. We gotta keep that kid in the twin cities!
