Twins Rumors....ugh, More Pitchers
(i Know its just MLB trade Rumors...but) but its also from LenIII
While I'm not to particulary thrilled about any of the Japaneese Arms or Brandon Lyon.... I will say that one's addition would help the team more than hurt it....
The threesome of kawakami, Uehara and Lyon are all experienced and Right Handed- something I think we need.
- I'm not so sure about Takashi Saito anymore -but I used to Really LIKE HIM!!!
If the Bidding gets to high on Kawakama at all I think we're out of it rather quick.

Lyon
If I were a betting man, I’d say they sign Lyon to be the eighth-inning guy. It won’t be cheap, but it might be the only hole they’re able to fill this offseason.

Yep.
I’d like this addition. Better than doing nothing and it is somewhat of a low-risk, high-reward type thing.

I like Lyon too
but it depends on the cost. He’s a sub-4.00 FIP guy (around a 3.85), which makes him valuable but not lights out. I’d prefer not to do two years, may likely demand two years and $12M+. With the arms we have waiting in the minors, I don’t want to see $6M+ tied up in Lyon for 2010. That’s the primary downside for me.
If we sign Lyon, what does our bullpen look like? Nathan, Lyon, Crain, Guerrier, Breslow, Mijares, Bonser, Humber, Jones. Bonser and Humber are out of options. I’d like to see what Boof can do starting the season in the pen, and Humber can have value in long relief / 6th starter role. Perhaps signing Lyon gives us the flexibility to trade a Perkins / Blackburn (potentially both if we get Kawakami, although I don’t think we have a chance there) to address other needs.

try 2 year
2.5-3 million per year. The Twins won’t pay 6 million for a non closing reliever.

Then they won't get him
The market is around $4-5 million for an eighth-inning guy (Jeremy Affeldt). If they want to play with the big boys, they better pay market rates.

Well, Lyon had a Matt Guerrier like 2008
so I think Doofus’ offer isn’t all that far off maybe 3.5-4 Million per year over 2-3 years would be decent….
Sure, Lyon was great up to and through the 2007 season but last year he regressed.
So I’m not all that sure signing him in particular is a good move for our club.
His ERA last season was 4.70 with his all -important WHIP at 1.48
both career lows (except for while in Boston in ’03 WHIP 1.56)
while his K:9 was rather outstanding at 6.7 and Walks per 9 good at 2.0
he gave up 11.5 hits per 9 innings pitched which is a sharp increase over the last 2-3 seasons….. for me, thats a bit of a red flag. Per Baseball Cube

2 years / $7M
seems about right. Lyon’s FIP jumped a bit last year, to 3.84 (from 3.44) primarily because he gave up more HR (7 in 59.1 IP, compared to 2 in 74 IP in 2007). His SO/BB rate improved (44/13 versus 40/22) a bit, which was very good.
Lyon’s high hit rate against doesn’t scare me that much. His BABIP was .355 last year compared to .287 and .290 the previous two years. Some of that jump was due to an increase in LD% (19.2% to 22.3%), but most was probably due to luck and/or worse defense. Remember, Hudson was out most of the year, and Reynolds wasn’t very good at 3B.

Well the Red Sox have added...
Takaishi Saito per Ken Roshenthal
that stinks!
they’ve already added: John Smoltz, Brad Penny, Jenichi Tazawa, Ramon Ramirez for Coco Crisp. WOW
Re-signed – Tim Wakefield (there is no room for Masterson or Bucholz really IMO)
I think Epstein must have had quite a bit of concern for his bullpen going into ’09.

Those are a lot of low (contract) risk, high reward options
Allowing Masterson to stay in the bullpen and Buchholz to learn how to throw a fastball again in the minors. Beyond Beckett-Matsuzaka-Lester-Wakefield, Boston is hoping for one of Penny-Smoltz-etc to work out. If they both work out, perhaps one moves to the pen. Nice position to be in…
