Joe Mauer talks about next year
And staying with the Twins.
"We can win here, I think we proved that here by getting to the postseason," Mauer said. "Ultimately, that's what I want to do."

I should also add
Mauer’s agent is Ron Shapiro, who was also Kirby Puckett’s agent.

haha...no wonder he might leave us.
What a terrible contract!
The 26-year-old catcher is entering the final year of a four-year, $33 contract.Geez.
And also: he really is so Minnesota.

He thought the $33 was a typo
And didn’t want to be rude by bringing it up.

it might be tough to re-sign him though
I hear his salary is about to jump into double digits

$10 a year?
Big Pimpin’ Joe can add that into one of his rap songs.

I wonder...
…do you think being a kid during the Knoublach mess is influencing his approach?

More the Santana and Hunter stuff, I think
Neither handled it well, and both used the media to push their positions.

well so far so good on that front
the minute we see him in NYC partying, wearing sunglasses at night though…and we’re screwed..

If Miss MN couldn't tempt Joe

Ultimately, that’s what I want to do.
Meaning what? Win? Or “win here?”
by Zathras on Oct 13, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, he did mention "win here"
in the previous part of that statement, but I’d assume he really just wants to win. Isn’t that the point of baseball, anyway?
As much as I would hate it if he left…I have to say, it wouldn’t be too shocking (very, very sad-yes. Shocking, no). He wants a championship; his chances are more likely elsewhere (though, again, you have to think about the playoff runs they’ve made in the past 8 or 9 years, there’s a decent chance here, too).

Looks like our late season playoff run helped too
Seeing the front office go to so much effort to get us into the playoffs has to boost Mauer’s confidence

and I almost forgot
Mauer will resign with the Twins because he is
so lazy that he would not want to take the effort of signing somewhere else.

hahaha
that would be far too much work to fill out all that paperwork and all those talks…
Easier to just stick around here.

when you make as much money as he does already...
it’s not like he is going to know what he is really getting paid. Can you imagine all those numbers?
might as well stick around and not worry about that contract until that day comes that his credit card is rejected…

I took that statement in a positive way
Meaning, he wants to win and that’s something he believes the Twins are capable of doing. It gave some more hope that he will stay a Twin after 2010.

I actually agree with you.
Just playing devil’s advocate a little. I think he’ll be loyal to the Twins.

I highly doubt that he would "resign" with the Twins...
I think the Twins will put up so much money that he’ll want to come back…when his contract started, he wasn’t the superstar that he is now and that’s why the number seems so low…
Mauer really is a big part of their income no matter how you look at it…and I think the Front Office knows that all too well…they’ll give them all the money they can muster up for him.
I’m very confident he’ll be here for a long time.

This is all looking pretty good.
From everything I’ve heard and read, it looks like both Bill Smith and Joe Mauer will be sitting down at the table from the starting point of, “So, let’s keep you in Minnesota,” and the rest of it will just be a numbers-hash.
Of course, this assumes no one does anything stupid. So… yeah. I’ll feel a lot better when the ink is dry.
