Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

minor league question for Roger

If you have any insight please feel free to add it to this thread.

I was wondering if you had an official list of players Twins signed in the International signing period.    I know of Sano 3.15 mill, Kepler 800 k roughly, and Jorge Polanco 750 k.  I know we signed some kid named Jonatan Yonojoso or something like that, another SS.  Do you know how much we paid him, and if we signed anyone else.

Also, do you think Kepler, Sano, and Polanco will all start in the GCL?  Those kids are awfully young, I remember reading Polanco was still 15, as of July 1st, had to wait to sign.   Do you think they will start Polanco in the DSL or bring him over to Florida, 750 k is quite an investment, I have the feeling they may bring him over?  Also do you have his Height/weight I can't seem to find it.

Any insight is appreciated.

Most of the information about International signings...

…isn’t easy to get. We reportedly signed 7 or 8 guys for around $5+ million. With Kepler-Rozycki, Polanco and Sano at $4.5mm, that means another 4 or 5 were signed for about $100k each. The signings that I am aware of, are the same four you mentioned and there was a 16 year old pitcher signed earlier last year from Australia, Mark Trau and another 16 year old pitcher, Robb Hein, who signed last spring and appeared in this fall’s World Cup. Another possible signing from Latin America is an infielder, Tedoord Dediveira, however, I am not 100% certain about him.

Kepler-Rozycki is already in Ft. Myers and the Twins have said he would be in the GCL next summer. LaVelle E Neal III wrote that Sano would also come over next year to the GCL. One can only assume, however, it is very likely that Polanco would join them on the 2010 GCL Twins.

Wander Guillen is a 16 year old (turned 17 in August) who began play with the DSL Twins shortly after the International signing date. I don’t know if he was one of this years signings, but he is a third baseman who arguably was the best hitter on the team (.336/.443/.409) that went to the DSL championships…although his bat was silent in the playoffs. One has to assume that he will also come to Ft. Myers next spring.

So yes, I expect next year’s GCL Twins to have several (perhaps 4, 5 or more) 17 year olds on it and all should be amongst the better young prospects in the organization. May be another good year to go after college pitching in the first rounds of the annual draft.
