Game 160: Kansas City Royals @ Minnesota Twins

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins, Oct 2, 2009 8:10 PM EDT

First Pitch:  7:10 CDT
TV:  FSN
Radio:  AM 1500 & TRN
Know Thine Enemy: Royals Review
Patron Saint: Pete Redfern
1977 Grammy Award Winner, Best New Artist: The Starland Vocal Band

Somehow, the Twins have managed to stay in the playoff race, if just barely, into the season's last weekend.  I wrote them off a month ago, so I'm more than happy to be proven somewhat wrong, and would love nothing more than for them to play a 163rd game on Tuesday after the Vikings defeat the Packers on Monday.

That said, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a game between two starters no one outside of the Midwest has ever heard of:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Jeff Manship 0-1 10 4 0 0 0 0 26.1 31 17 17 4 14 17 5.81 1.71

Um, he looked good mopping up after Liriano crapped the bed on Sunday?  Yeah, that's about what I have for positivity.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Lenny DiNardo 0-2 4 4 0 0 0 0 20.1 34 21 17 1 13 8 7.52 2.31

His groundbreaking work on Laverne & Shirley has yet to translate to success on the major league level.

I really don’t understand the special animosity toward the White Sox that a lot of Twins fans seem to have.

by JonathanR on Oct 2, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

there is all the trashing talking the White Sox have said when the Twins won the division…

- the better team on paper didn’t win
- who cares if they make the playoffs they are just going to lose in the first round

not quotes of course… but yeah…I don’t like the Sox but I love them for the next 3 games…

just a little toughy tonight as they are giving me the KC feed not the Twins’ feed.

Time to Bring in the Hammer..Joe Nathan

The Same Hammer that Patrick Reusse says the Twins should trade this off-season for a Ryan Franklin type player..

by TonyO on Oct 2, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

1.95 ERA & 43 saves ....

Franklin’s not been bad.

I wouldn’t have traded Nathan for him – just saying.

by BD57 on Oct 2, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

That goatee is awful though

He’d have to shave that off before he joined the Twins

by JTW on Oct 2, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

that said he wouldn’t vote for Grienke for Cy Young because he didn’t have enough wins. And he has an AL Cy vote!

Blackburn's gotta go out there and pitch the game of his life

Cuz we’re not going to be winning any lopsided games vs. Zack Grienke.

by JTW on Oct 2, 2009 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly

If I had anyone on the staff to do it, I’d probably go with Blackburn. After last years game 163 and the later part of this season, he seems to be clutch

I hate to sound like Joe Morgan

but he does seem to really step up in big situations. He’s always been a much better pitcher at home than on the road for whatever reason, and if he can get the inexperienced Royals hitters to chase junk out of the zone he’ll do just fine. I’d still rather have Baker, but Blackburn is #2.

Just got back from the game.

AMAZING! TWINS WIN! It was SO cool to have the crowd screaming their heads off every time the ChiSux scored. And Delmon’s grand slam in the first was UNREAL. Awesome game!
