Around SBN: An Explanation For Some Of The Perplexing HOF Snubs

I was reading over at Bless You Boys this morning and saw word of a news report explaining why Miguel Cabrera had bruising and scratching on his face for Sundays game. This is from the Detroit Free Press.

That's very interesting

because when he was asked about it on Saturday, he said it was because of his dog. Hmmm.

Well, this gives us an extra strategy.

According to Deadspin, Miguel came home drunk at 6:00 am Saturday morning after partying with… Wait for it… Players from the Chicago White Sox.

As the Deadspin article says, “It’s bad enough he was getting hammered in the middle of the most important series of the year and staying out until 6:00 a.m. the night before a must-win, season-on-the-line game, but to get sloshed alongside the team that’s standing in your way?”

Maybe Justin Morneau could do something to help our boys even though he’s not playing… He could offer Miggy a “relaxing night out” tonight in Minneapolis, get him ripped and drop him off at the team hotel in the wee hours of the morning.

After all, Miggy went 0-11 against the Sox, I can’t imagine his binge drinking had nothing to do with it.

C’mon, Justin! Take one for the team!

by Neil on Oct 5, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

Ok, so the more I think about this, the more angry I get.

He goes home from the start of arguably the most important series of the year, decides “Hey, let’s go get trashed with some WHITE SOX players”, then comes home hours before a huge game and fights with his wife. Now, that alone is bad, but then someone with the Detroit organization decides that it’s ok for him to still play on Saturday and Sunday after that?! They had to bail him out of jail!

I don’t get this. I think it shows poor team and work ethic on his part (won’t even delve into the Springer-esque part of the story with his wife), and he should be punished for it.

looking on the other side

if this happened with Mauer (not that it would cause he’s a saint) I would write the angriest letter of all time if the Twins held him out of the lineup. I want to win, I don’t care what type of people we do it with.

I do see the other side...

why punish the rest of the team/the fans for his stupid actions?

It just seems like they’re saying “hey, that’s cool…getting ridiculously drunk (.26 BAC…Jesus) and fighting with your wife during a really important series is you know, really okay. Just win here.” :\

I see why they’re letting him play, I really do. It just also seems so wrong.

Mauer

His scandal would be more like “Mauer drinks a light beer, says a swear word in front of his girlfriend.” And it would happen in the off season.

“I don’t know what happened! I was totally out of control,” Mauer told the press.

funny

then he would never drink a drop again. Donate a ton of money to a charity, become a HOF’er, live forever, and win the 2222 WS by himself.

It could happen

Mauer makes 10 year old cry by turning down invitiation to his birthday party… Mauer tells reporter he doesn’t know what came over him, “I never turn down a punch and pie party, and they were even going to have a clown. I just feel awful.”

Twins still plan to start the catcher for game 163 but will now only offer him 100 bazillion million dollars in the offseason

by caluofmn on Oct 5, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not even sure they are better off playing him from a win perspective.

He might be upset enough from this that he might end up playing poorly. And we don’t know how the rest of the Tigers would react to Cabrera playing or sitting on the bench.

by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Oct 5, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...he went 0-4 on Saturday.

and I’m assuming that has a lot to do with his previous night.

I would be curious to hear what the other Tigers players reactions are to this. I would think they’d be mad…he’s really putting their season at risk.

Dombrowski obviously knew Saturday morning

Since he picked him up. Which means Leyland knew. He’s not going to be suspended…if he was, they would have done it Saturday instead of playing him.

C'mon.

I can’t even figure out why this got elevated to our front page.

Big deal. Humans make mistakes. A number of married couples physically fight.

It happens. It is unfortunate for sure, but it happens.

I see no reason why this is any kind of issue on the Twinkie Town front page.

And what Leyland, or the Tiger Org. does is their business. It’s a domestic dispute for god’s sake. Sad. But utterly human.

by montanatwinsfan on Oct 5, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

I elevated this because it has potential ramifications for the game tomorrow night.

And yeah, fighting is human. But when you’re drunk and you’re a celebrity and it comes out like this, you always get demonized…even if the report (like the words FoulJack used above) don’t say anything other than what actually happened. He doesn’t call Cabrera a bastard or a wife beater or anything else…he just says Cabrera was drunk during a fight with his wife.

But ultimately the reason it’s news and the reason it’s on the front page is because of the ramifications it could have for tomorrow. I’m not going to judge him for what happened, I don’t know the details. And I’m not going to judge Leyland whether he suspends Cabrera or not. But it is a distraction. And going out the night before a big game, with the opposition no less, is not a good thing to do. The personal side of this story takes a back seat to me. What matters is that Cabrera put himself in front of the team. And that might give the Twins a slight edge if Cabrera is distracted when he plays tomorrow.

by Jesse on Oct 5, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I just thought it was newsworthy.

I’m actually with you Montana. I’m an alcoholic myself, (the now non-drinking kind) so I am not going to beat him up over this by any means. I know its playing big in Detroit right now and thought it was interesting is all. I think we would be quite shocked to see how some of our hero’s spend their free time. (Example: Love Boat) So no, not meaning to throw stones at all. I feel bad for his teammates and the Detroit fans mostly. To work so hard all year long and to have your biggest star go 0 for 4 after that kind of night would be maddening.

I always loved that one.

by FoulJack on Oct 5, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

No I agree you were neutral, and I understand the fanshot.

And I apologize if I sounded angry or scolding, Jesse, cuz I didn’t mean to be.
I am just not sure it should be on the front page. And my reaction is probably a little more disappointment at the fact that because it is on the front page it invites people to use it to pass judgments of morality.

by montanatwinsfan on Oct 5, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

if it sounds like I was passing judgment on his morality, that was not my intention.

My intention WAS, however, to show was a fricking idiot he is. No matter the dumb decisions he may make, or how much you say “everyone’s human”, etc etc…he is a star, has been one for awhile, and knows that what he does affects everyone in his life. I don’t think athletes should be put on the high pedestals that they are (but again, I’m hypocritical because I have my favorites too), but it’s just a fact that they are. This is not a new concept to Mr. Miggy, nor is it the first time he’s gotten in a little trouble for his party habits.

No matter what he does with his personal life (and I did mention before that I wouldn’t touch on that; that is between him and his wife), his baseball/partying antics are public. Making mistakes is a natural thing, but choosing to make such a huge mistake was a bad move and showed very poor judgment on his part.

For me

It has to do with his baseball performance.

He stayed up all night drinking and had a shitty couple of games at the plate. Because of it, or not, they’re paying him a lot of money to hit the ball and he certainly didn’t hit all weekend.

by Neil on Oct 5, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

If he gets even a couple hits this weekend, this isn’t nearly as newsworthy.

Cabrera name came up a bit after the all- star break.

There is no clear cut case like there is in the NL, and Cabrera fits that " big name, good numbers on a contender" ticket. He hasn’t been mentioned as much since Mauer and the Twins have been winning. I think he’d would have gotten 1 or 2 1st place votes before this, but now….

I'm ambiguous

MIQUEL Cabrera’s behavior is suspension-worthy. 1) BA count of .26, he had to be feeling the effects of that the next day. That is unprofessional, especially in a pennant race. 2) Fraternizing with the opposing team. Not acceptable, especially given the situation. I haven’t seen details of who he drank with and how long he was in their company, but that is truly unprofessional, as well. 3) Fighting with your wife. I know that it happens. Perhaps Mrs. Cabrera wasn’t totally a victim, but I am willing to guess that she is about half Miquel’s size. To me,(Captain Obvious), the drinking almost certainly was a big part of the reason for the fight. Still, M. Cabrera should be fined. I doubt that hurting the team by suspending him will happen.

Now, for the ramifications: If the Tigers lose, Cabrera will bear the brunt of the blame, whether he goes 0-5 for 5-5. However, the team may adopt a bunker mentality, perceiving that they are being picked on by the media and made underdogs etc., that is scary for the Twins. It also could light a fire under Cabrera. The Tigers have slowly faded, now all the attention is on their star and not on whether Brandon Inge is too injured to play at a high level, and why Granderson can’t hit lefties etc. Almost every factor favored the Twins coming in. This event has changed some of the focus and is like tipping the card table over when you have a losing hand. You may still have a losing hand., but there is a new deal.

This is what I feared.

I fully expected to see more crap like this from our intelligent observers (no sarcastic font because we do have a lot of intelligent observers here ): For Cabrera, one bad scratch deserves another

The MSN headline reads: “Partying star forfeits playoffs”

This self-righteous windbag Morosi gets all over Cabrera – not for assaulting his wife, which deserves criticism – but for showing up to work hung over. Who the hell hasn’t done that a dozen times? Who the Hell hasn’t called in sick to watch game 163 to take a mental health day, or because they had a cough and the sun was shining. Apparently Morosi is the perfect little worker bee. Way to keep those cogs moving Morosi.

by fischean on Oct 6, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Personally, I do.

But this level of stupidity is for his wife, kids, Tigers Org., and the district court judge to deal with.

What do we know about Cabrera? What does Morosi know?

Lawrence Taylor, one of the most feared linebackers in the NFL ever and maybe one of the greatest athletes in professional sports ever, partied like a fool, and showed up Sunday mornings trashed. Regularly. But when he strapped on the pads he earned his paycheck, nonetheless.

I am not condoning what Cabrera did, I wouldn’t do it, but I am saddened by a culture which is so quick to judge. Not just judge in fact, but ‘blame’ Cabrera for a 5-1 loss on Saturday, and create a serious implication that Cabrera’s mistake is the reason that the Tigers are in the position they are now.

by montanatwinsfan on Oct 6, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Blaming the loss on Cabrera is easier than saying we stunk on Saturday. It is an easy excuse.

but I agree with you montana, it doesn’t make it right.

by caluofmn on Oct 6, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't at all think that he alone made them lose on Saturday.

I did say, however, that him going 0-4 probably had a lot to do with the previous night. I read that Morosi article and yes, it does sound like he’s blaming the loss on Cabrera.

This isn’t the first time Cabrera has gotten in trouble for his behavior while drinking. I think that has a LOT to do with people’s reaction to the situation.

Cabrera

Cabrera should be fined heavily by the Tigers for surely breaking team rules by drinking that heavily before a game, and perhaps suspended a few games next season. THe MLB (or NFL, NHL, LPGA, whatever) is an athletic league, not a morality league, and I daresay this sort of reprehensible stuff happens fairly often in the majors.
