The Twins-Tigers Excitement Morning Open Thread

--Black Eyed Peas
To say that I'm excited for this afternoon's game is an understatement. In just a few hours our Minnesota Twins, the Lazarus of the baseball world, have one chance to finish what they started back on Opening Day. Stealing the division from the Tigers might remind a few of you of 2006. And while this incarnation of the Twins isn't about to win it's 96th game (it would be 87, the first Minnesota division crown won with fewer than 90 wins this decade), right now this is a club playing like a good team should play.
Nine hours and counting.

Got Twins
I knew ya had it in ya. Never doubted you for a minute. Overlooking the six times I left you for dead in September of course.
Go Twins
I doubted you heavily, but you made me look like a fool and a fair weather fan. I hope you win today. You sure have made this a fun season.
Is this really the start time?!?
What an odd time… that’s 2 PM PT. I maybe have to take a half day or something…
I wonder what’s up with that? Give the winning team time to get the NY after the game? TBS didn’t want to pre-empt its evening lineup?
It is this early so the winning team can get to NY and get settled in tonight.

OK...
Gosh… I remember clicking record on the DVR, but I didn’t check the game time when I did that and I’m not sure if my DVR is smart enough to move it if the game time has moved. Hmmm… might have to drive home for lunch.
this would be a terrible day to miss a game!

I ended up changing with someone at work so I could get today off.
baseball>work, clearly. Haha

I would if I could
We’re busy with all the H1N1 flu people coming in and short handed as it is. :(

ohhh
not only do you not get to watch at home, but swine flu people? Gross. :(

Not so gross really, just sick
And most don’t end up having the H1N1 flu, but that’s healthcare.

I meant gross as in...not watching the game.
a couple of the kids at my work contracted H1N1…not a lot of fun.

Gotta save hookie for the World Series :-)
There’s always gameday… and I could bug out of here at 3 I suppose and “work from home”. I was just figuring it would be a repeat of last night’s football game where I enjoyed a nice game at 5 PM. Guess not.
There
There is something really amazing about two teams having played 162 times over 6 months and still not having anybody able to win even the narrowest victory. No, after a long, tumultuous season, they’ll need to do it one more time.

So nervous
Very apt title for this post, Jesse. I am beyond excited and nervous for this game. I have no idea how I’m going to last the next 7 hours. I am very thankful I had the Vikings game to distract myself with last night (and I hope some of that rival defeating mojo is still lingering in the Dome). I’m also getting irrationally upset that everyone is assuming the Twins are going to win…hopefully no one is telling the players that. They seem to REALLY like to play the underdog role.
I have been stoked for this since the last out
Since Liriano induced the force out on Sunday, I have been turning the coming game over in my mind. All I ask is that Joe Nathan throws the last pitch!

Ducking out of work early
I don’t get TBS, so I’m heading over to my grandmother-in-law’s place to watch the game. On the minus side, I won’t be able to participate in the game thread, because she does not have wireless internet. On the plus side, there is a very good chance of homemade cookies and/or pie.

Believe it!
I told the bartender last night, while I was watching the Vikes game, to have a Guinness and a shot of Jameson waiting for me.

Probably
As early as they could get the field set up for baseball. They want to give the winner a chance to get to NY for the playoffs.

I ended up sleeping about 3 hours last night...
kept running through possible scenarios in my head…what would happen if person A got a hit, but person B didn’t? Or if a Twin loses a ball in the roof again!? Ahhhhhh! 4 pm needs to get here soon!

I had a dream last night
that Baker pitched 8 innings and only gave up 1 hit. I would be so happy if my dream came true!!

um, yes, I would too!
that would be fantastic…

I (almost) never doubted them for a minute
7.5 GB a month ago and everyone declaring them DOA. It’s not my 1st year as a Twins fan so I expected them to make this run, but they’ve still amazed me! Nobody thought they could do it in 1987 or 1991 either. I’m so anxious/nervous and proud of my Twins right now I can’t stand it!
GO TWINS!!!

I admit to a feeling of dread.
It just seems… so obvious that we would win. Hot streak, homefield advantage, all the problems the Tigers have been having… let’s be honest, how often in baseball does the obvious thing happen? We may have already jinxed ourselves with our optimism.
Of course, that might be the weather-induced depression talking. I tell you, after glancing out the window, the Metrodome is looking mighty good right now.

Is this game on local TV today?
Anyone with inside information? I know channels 9 and 5 sometimes have picked up Twins playoff games in the past, but I don’t remember them picking up the one game playoff with the Sox last year. I don’t have cable, but I would desperately like to watch this game (though I can live with radio).
cautiously optimistic
Last year, I was excited but dreading game 163 knowing the Sox were playing in the cell against a Minnesota team that did everything in its power to make it close. This year, not as much. The Twins are hot over the last month and are winning games when they have to. They are at home too against a Detroit team that just gave away the central. We have every reason to think we can win this.
Personally, I don’t think it’s the pitching that will decide this. It will be the offense. If our offense comes out hitting, Detroit will fold very easily…

Yankees haven't won a postseason series since 2004...
Yes, they’d be favored, but I don’t see how their fans or media should be counting their chickens against anyone at this point.
That was an incredibly stupid article
“Joe Mauer does not equal the sum of Curtis Granderson, Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Placido Polanco, Carlos Guillen, Brandon Inge, and Aubrey Huff. "
Um, of course he doesn’t. But I did some checking, and apparantly we get to have 9 guys play for us too! And even better, our 8 position players are better at hitting than theirs!
by lookatthosetwins on Oct 6, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions
There's more
I’ll take my chances with Mauer. Even if he hits a HR in every at bat, they’ll only be solo shots with the way this team labors at getting on base
Team OBP Rank
Twins 0.344 5
Tigers 0.311 19
Hmmm… Doesn’t really seem like we “labor” to get on base….

I think the schedule of the ALDS
will work out pretty good for the Twins pitching rotation. KNOCK ON WOOD
Wed: Blackburn
Fri: Pavano
Sun: Baker
Mon: Blackburn
Wed: Pavano
I see no need to start Manship or Duensing. If one of starters falters, they’ll be brought in for long relief.
"You should enter a ballpark like you enter a church." - Bill "Spaceman" Lee
How do you feel that matches up to...
Wed: Sabathia
Fri: Burnett
Sun: Pettitte/Champerlain
Mon: Sabathia
Wed: Burnett
That makes me pretty nervous…
Not good, but
Joe Mauer is better than Jorge Posada.
and….
and…
help me out here….

Span is better than Brett Gardner
Kubel is better than Matsui
In my dream last night
The Twins had just blown a big lead in the top of the ninth. And then the baby woke me up! Arghh, I didn’t get to see the comeback.
Congrats Twins!
Royals fan here pulling for you.
Maybe one day I’ll be in your… … Nah. Not even worth finishing the sentence.
Congrats on having a stud pitcher
It’s gotta help getting through the season watching that guy throw every fifth day.

Depends on how you look at it
I mean, he should have pitched in so many more victories, if even replacement level players had been playing in the field behind him.
Honest to God, I’ve become more of a cynic in life due to being a Royals fan.
2 PM ET Update:
Still freaking out. Also, getting very concerned that we have been jinxed by one too many analysts calling us a shoo in to win this game…I’m trying to jinx the jinx but I have no idea how….I’m also wondering what happened to all semblence of rational thought i used to have…
