Would it be such a bad thing to start Gomez?
As cool as it was to have Gomez score the winning run, it sure sucked to lose Kubel for a third of the game.
Who backs up 1B? Tolbert? Morales? Does it matter?
This is what I have been thinking
I would absolutely trade Morales’ bat for Gomez’ glove at this point. Move Kubel back to DH, so you don’t lose his bat late and wind up with Gomez behind Mauer (which of course worked out last night, but still).
If you are starting a guy at DH that you pinch hit for with Brendan Harris, there’s no point in having him in the lineup. I like Morales, but he’s a backup catcher.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gomez start today
Because, LHP on the mound and Gardy evidently doesn’t like Morales vs LHP, so he’ll probably go with Harris anyway. But, evidently it’s gonna be crazy windy tonight with RF being the tough field. So put Span out there and DH Kubel with Gomez in CF.
Agreed.
Start Gomez, DH Kubel. Morales is not hitting at the moment, so Gomez would not be much of an offensive dropoff, plus he would be a defensive asset.

Good thinking
To go along with what Eric said below, not only did they pinch hit for Morales in the sixth inning, but they pinch hit for him with Brendan Harris against a right handed pitcher – they were so anxious to get Morales out of the lineup that they gave up the platoon advantage.
I am hoping the “Morales at DH” experiment is either over or nearing its end – I like the idea of putting Gomez in the lineup over Morales or Harris, keeping Harris available as the backup corner infielder.

I agree, and that's what I expected when Morneau went down
I think part of the reason Morales has been DHing is because they’ve been winning and Gardy is of the school that you don’t change things when you are winning.
I was thinking it might actually be a 24 man playoff roster
with Redmond on it, who under most circumstances wouldn’t see the light of day for the entire month.
But, I won’t be surprised if Redmond starts at DH sometime this series with LHP’s CC and Pettite throwing 3 of the first 4 games.
After last night
They needed every healthy arm they could muster.

They have no choice at this point
Playoff rosters are set August 31, and even if players are on the DL, they can only replace pitchers with pitchers and position players with position players.
I agree that they don’t need that many pitchers for the playoffs (if they do, they will be done very soon), but they apparently weren’t concerned with the playoff roster before September.
I had a post on the playoff roster back in August in which I speculated that they’d send down a pitcher and bring up Morales to set the playoff roster at 14 position players and 11 pitchers, but they did not take my advice.

Well, they have some leeway because of injuries
I believe they could have included Buscher as an injury replacement for Morneau and Manship as an injury replacement for Slowey.

Yes, but...
Morales wasn’t called up until September, so he is the replacement for Morneau. As for Manship, there are simply 12 pitchers better than him available (I suppose Liriano is arguable, but he can be another LOOGy, if nothing else). My FanPost back in August about the postseason roster had him as a probable leave-off, and that was before Rauch and Mahay were acquired (although I anticipated 11 pitchers instead of 12).
I wasn’t saying they had no choice but to exclude Buscher and Manship; I was saying that they had no choice but to include 12 pitchers, because that’s what they had on August 31.

lefty pitchers are a premium in this series
Yankee Stadium has a short porch in RF and the dome’s RF line isn’t that far either.
Pointis, they had a choice betwen Morales and Buscher and they chose Morales

wat?
Playoff rosters were set in the last 24 hours. They were chosen from the group of players that were on the 40 man roster on Aug 31 who had played for MN previous to that date.
Not entirely
It’s not quite that simple – they can’t just pick and choose guys off the 40-man willy-nilly; however, after looking some more at the few resources I can find (the full rules for this are not published on the internet, that I’ve been able to find), I think I was a bit off with my earlier thoughts on the playoff roster. I was under the impression that the 25-man playoff roster was submitted on August 31, and injury replacements were made immediately before the playoffs.
However, the couple of places where I’ve found a cut-and-paste of the rules word it slightly different from what I’d thought – it appears that the teams get to make a list of postseason-eligible players, consisting of the 25-man roster as of August 31, plus anyone on the disabled or bereavement lists, and they choose from that list before the playoffs start. Players on the 60-day DL can be replaced with a player of the same position (pitcher or position player) who was in the team’s system on August 31 – I didn’t see a 40-man roster requirement, although I’d doubt that a player would be added to the postseason roster if he didn’t merit a September callup (although if I’m interpreting that right, it would be possible for a player to be added to the 40-man roster after August 31 and still make the playoff roster, as long as he was in the team’s minor league system then).
One other thing I got from this interpretation – the Twins may not have been stuck with 12 pitchers, if they had a position player or two on the 15-day DL that they could’ve added to the list of players eligible for the postseason. I think 12 pitchers is too many for the playoffs (it limits your pinch hitting options, especially in NL rules, and if you have to use that many pitchers, chances are that you’re not winning enough games to keep playing), but maybe that’s what the Twins wanted.

Good luck today from an Angels fan.
That game yesterday was riveting, and a lot of us were rooting for you.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
thanks we ill be rooting for you if we cant take down the yankees
i hate the yankees and red sox, respect the angels, they are a great team, well run
Vikings 4 the superbowl
Thanks opiejeanne for the support (although after seeing DY's ABs in the Yankee game, I'm not so sure)
I think the talking heads are saying the same thing as you, but I get the sense that the meaning is quite a bit different. Here is my new most unfavorite line: “The Twins just have a bunch of ball players,” and what we mean by that is BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. I think that I have hated this line the most. It is almost condescending inasmuch as it is said in a way to imply that the Twins really haven’t much talent but they hustle, slide into first base or whatever. It’s almost like that Twins don’t even deserve to be in the same stadium as the Yankees. I hope I don’t hear this line even one more time.
And one more thing that has been rubbing me the wrong way. Hey Talking Heads!!!! The Tigers and Jim Leyland have lost, so get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Nothing against the Tigers or Jim Leyland, but its the Yankees-Twins!)

Well, he isn't doing it
Kubel in right and Harris DH’ing tonight, according to Joe C.
I really don’t see the advantage of this—I want their best defensive OF out there, and given Morneau’s injury, what’s the point of starting a bench player at DH?
My lineup for this evenings game:
1. Span – RF
2. Cabrera – SS
3. Mauer – C
4. Kubel – DH
5. Cuddyer – 1B
6. Young – LF
7. Gomez – CF
8. Tolbert – 3B
9. Punto – 2B
Harris wont play in the field especially with his glove recently…Morales isnt hitting well recently and I would rather have the defensive wizards out there in windy NY, than the bats in the lineup. We have to keep some of those potential Yank runs from scoring….with an outfield of Kubel, Span, Young you are going to have a lot of fly balls that drop in and runs that could score, whereas Young, Gomez, Span will be the better outfield without flyballs dropping in and runs scoring.

Yep
I might switch Cuddyer and Kubel in your lineup with Sabbathia going, but that seems like the best group to me (though I might go with Casilla over Tolbert). However, Joe C. reports that Harris is the DH tonight and Kubel is in RF.

Good grief
Gardy once again pulls a “what?” lineup! Good point with Casilla over Tolbert…Casilla has had some success vs Sabathia and probably should get slotted in at 2B with Punto moving to 3B.
Cuddyer and Kubel probably could switch around as well. What in the world is Gardy thinking with putting Kubel in RF, benching Gomez, putting Harris at DH.
With it being windy in NY this evening, you would want your best defense out there! This is the time you wish you had Morneau, who is a Mr. October of his own, so that way you can put Cuddyer out in RF, thus forcing Kubel into the DH role. Tonight, you may want your best fielding outfield out there….hopefully you win with a mediocre outfield Gardy!

Yeah
watching Kubel and Young stagger around out there in the wind doesn’t strike me as the best approach.
