Fucking pisses me off with the Yankees. They don’t DESERVE any more championships for a long time – they have fucking 26 of them. The media makes it like we should feel sorry with them for the “burden” and “pressure” they carry. Fuck that. They don’t need another one for a long ass time. Go Twins!

by Mike I on Oct 7, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ehh
They didn’t have the highest payroll until after 99 IIRC. hell, they didn’t even have the highest payroll in their division. (I’m fairly sure the O’s outspend the Yanks until then, as amazing as that soudn)
And besides, they made some very solid trades (Swisher) as well, and have done a fairly nice job developing guys despite having virtually no picks in the first round for the last decade. (almost their entire bullpen minus Marte)
Still, I think they should add / move two more teams into the region (one in New York and one in New England)
by RollingWave on Oct 7, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Of course they are. But the 3 they signed this year (Sabathia, Burnett, and Texaria) cost them close to half a billion dollars to sign. That is, in my opinion, insane and bad for baseball.

Well, Mik I
I did the leg work about fetch9’s stats for who was the better closer.
Turns out the reason Fetch9 used the stats he used is because he took them directly off fangraphs. He used the last 8 years because that was the total fangraphs showed him.
BTW, I have a technical/engineering background, but I’m not a stat-head so I had to calculate FIP since tRA uses linear regression. I have a TI-89 Titanium and have been looking for the data script but the calculation uses opaque raw data that I have no access to.
Hence, short-hand FIP.
I think only the last 3 years are relevant since this is the industry standard.
Since Fetch9 used 3 stats (K/9, HR/9, and FIP which I’ll substitute for tRA) to argue for Nathan, I’ll add 3 stats for fair measure and context.
K/BB will do for a measure of control to balance the K/9 power pitching stat.
WHIP I think is a generally a fair measure of performance even without the texture.
And finally, I think you HAVE to include a results-oriented stat because, no matter how you get there, the results STILL matter:
Save % will do.
So we have FIP, K/9, K/BB, HR/9, WHIP, and Save % for the past 3 years.
Fair?
First FIP: Mo beats Joe > 2.43 to 2.74
K/9: Joe beats Mo > 10.38 to 9.63
K/BB: Mo beats Joe > 7.43 to 4.07
HR/9: Mo beats Joe > .648 to .692
WHIP: Mo beats Joe > .898 to .952
Save : Mo beats Joe > 94.2 to 86.1%
In 2 of the 3 stats Fetch9 used, Mo beats Joe in 2.
In fact, K/9 is the only stat that Joe bests Mo (and not by much).
by Terrekain on Oct 7, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
really, you're using FIP for a reliever? fair enough

and he's throwing 10 percentage points less pitches in the zone
compared to his career average

Well, it's been fun pretending to be a piniata.
It’s been fun, but I’ll address those stats tomorrow, if ever.
You’re making the case that Rivera has declined.
That’s fine, but if you know anything about the technical/engineering world, you know that criticising a project or standard is not feasible without providing an alternative standard.
Declining with respect to whom?
His former self?
That’s not a pitcher that exists in this time frame so it is an invalid alternative.
The standard is Nathan; and – as you’ve already mentioned -
Mariano bests him.

You know how these boards are
You were begging to a pinata when you brought up Nathan.
And yes, I am comparing him to his former self. At his peak. I’m comparing him to his career averages. To say his skills have declined. Just like every other 39 year old ballplayer. It’s not a novel concept.

Seriously?
That’s fine, but if you know anything about the technical/engineering world, you know that criticising a project or standard is not feasible without providing an alternative standard.
You seriously want us to take you seriously?

We're not using the "perfect" standard.
We’re making comparisons to an alternative; in this case Nathan.
And Mariano still beats Nathan after all these years.

I also said to compare them since 2004
when Nathan started closing. Back to the TI-89! ;)
Whatever, you were much more enjoyable than the rest of the NY visitors tonight.

Terrekain, I got this guy you might like to hang out with...
His name is Johnny Safron, he also is hyper -defensive, anal retentive and has no sense of humor.
You two will get along great!

And he uses manipulated stats!
I always loved that one.

Why did NY put in Rivera? Either way, I like it cuase they are using him up! Even with the off days.

Oh well
After 12 innings and no rest last night, I wasn’t expecting a lot today.
Tomorrow is another story!

Still, I gotta ask.
Why are you here/ I will give you credit for holding your tongue and realizing that most of the crap we spouted tonight was frustration and morbid humor and hyperbole, and to your credit you didn’t take the bait.
But why sit through it?

BTW, how may stirkouts did DY have?
I could only watch the first few innings, but he was thrown 6 pitches out of the strikezone and he had swung at 6 pitches out of the strikezone in his first two at bats.
The Twins were laying off CC crap pitches in the dirt and stuff in general over the first couple of innings (except for DY), but I am guessing they started swinging at the that garbage as time went along.
I am also guessing, but I imagine Duensing started to fall behind in the count, which a recipe for extra basehits against the evil empire.

Trouble
I know TBS has an obsession for the Yankees. You’d think we were the worst team ever to make the playoffs based on Ron Darling’s commentary. BUT, I do think the next game is essential. We need to get to AJ early. We did a decent job tonight, laying off CC’s stuff, but we need more runs — way more runs than two runs.
And, when we get to the Dome, I want it to be LOUD. Really loud.

Whither the Twins...
The Twins play with such confidence and poise at home (and against my favorites, the White Sox) but look the opposite against the Yankees.
Come on Twins beat the damn Evil Empire!

At the risk of being a total n00b/jerkoff/'that guy'...
Does anyone have any idea where the Twins are staying in Manhattan, or where they usually stay? I’m assuming it’s in some swank Midtown/Times Square vicinity hotel. Reason I’m asking is, no, I am not a 16 year old girl trying to marry Joe Mauer… My niece and nephew are in town from MN (I live in NYC), and since I can’t afford 3 tickets without taking out a 2nd mortgage (only half kidding…) I know they would love nothing more than to catch a glimpse of, maybe even get an autograph from a Twinkie. Obviously I’m not trying to stalk anyone or invade anyone’s privacy; just trying to be a nice uncle. If I knew what hotel they might be staying in…maybe we might have lunch across the street…and maybe we might see ol’ Cuddy Buddy out for a stroll… just sayin’ :)
