I’m hoping for the Dome to bring both wins here and then make them battle it out in NY. Make them work for it…don’t just roll over and let them take it.

“On October 9, 2009 Phil Cuzzi made a blatant mistake on a fair/foul call in the 11th inning on the ALDS (Minnesota Twins @ New York Yankees). Cuzzi was working as the left field umpire at the time and Joe Mauer’s lead off hit was ruled a foul ball. On the replay not only was it shown that the ball landed at least a foot fair, but the left fielder, Melky Cabrera, had touched the ball in fair territory prior to the ball landing fair. It can be argued that the blown call cost the Twins the ballgame as Mauer did not score and may have scored from one of the 2 hits that followed his at bat.” wikipedia

The rule says HBP includes jerseys.
There is an exception that the ump can make if he chooses to make it, if the jersey is loose. The ump did not choose that exception. The ump missed the call.

but on the other hand the ball touched his glove AND landed fair. It is painful that I saw it correct the first time on a fast play from 2000+ miles away with a bad camera angle. The ump who is paid to catch those things missed them both.

yeah it touched his glove.
tough call for an ump to make… …if he is watching the line. But if he is watching the line …?!?!?!?!?!!?
I’ve ref’d quite a bit of hockey and damnit sometimes you aren’t looking in the right spot and you miss things. Other times the action happens so fast that whistle goes to your lips because you anticipate soemthing and the next thing you know you blow the play dead as the puck squirts out behind the goalie and in the net and its too late.
Still. The ump in this game was clearly watching the line. He shouldn’t have missed that one.
by montanatwinsfan on Oct 9, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, I get that umps are still human and make mistakes
but that was just flat out a terrible, unacceptable call. I mean, he made a point to show he was watching the line…how do you not see that it was fair? Even Chip “I like saying the word fisted a lot” Caray noticed how terrible of a call that was.

But I get the feeling that the ump blaming thing is getting a bit intense. It’s a shit call, but there’s a lot of other things that cost us the game.

Exactly, on both counts
Blaming a blown call that only might have made a difference (and probably not) is silly.
Maybe Mauer gets thrown out trying to score on Kubel’s hit, for instance.
by JonathanR on Oct 9, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh it would have made a difference.
nathan on second would undoubtedly have scored.
by montanatwinsfan on Oct 9, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But then do the twins get 2 singles after Mauer's double?
Do the Yankees score another run after Teixeira’s home run? You need a time machine to play this “what if” game.
by Mike I on Oct 9, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no you don't.
That’s disingenuous. You simply insert a double instead of a single and let everything else play out as it did.

he made a mistake
this is dumb. the ump blew a call. happens a lot. that hardly means he should be stalked or whatever. he blew a call. that’s all you can say about it. the other night, inge got hit by a pitch. same deal. the ump blew the call. this is how it goes.
bottom line is that with no one out and three guys on, we should have scored at least one run. we should have scored two – on two sac flies — but one would have been okay. none? unacceptable. intolerable. I don’t care if Delmon hit the ball hard. he didn’t drive it out of the infield. He needed to. And, frankly, if Joe Nathan had done his job, we wouldnt have had this conversation.
But the ump isn’t to blame here. He blew a call, for sure, but umps blow calls. They don’t hit balls. they don’t catch them.
Shape up.

I wish people would stop using the Inge "HBP" thing as an example.
but yes, you make a good point. Not entirely the ump’s fault at all. The Twins are majorly to blame here-leaving that many runners on base is unacceptable in playoff baseball.

Even us Yankee fans agree
it was a God-awful call. Dunno if you would have won had it been called correctly, but it sure as Hell didn’t help you guys out.
Still, and I’m no trying to be a troll here, if you have the bases loaded and no out facing a rookie pitcher you have to score. The ump made a terrible call but that isn’t what cost you in the end, it was the lack of hitting with RISP.
Best of luck in the Metrodome, at least for Game 3. I honestly mean that. I’m a diehard Yankee fan, but I’m also fond of the Twins.

by GMan83201 on Oct 9, 2009 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Twins mistakes are worse than Cuzzi's
They did not even argue when the guy blew the call on two different levels.
Why not argue the call?
That’s all I’m saying. Sure, umps are human, but he was within 30 feet, the ball hit Melky’s glove AND landed fair.
And the Twins say nothing?
If you go to New York and someone takes your wallet and then pushes you to the ground, what are you going to do?
Say: We’ll see you back in Minnesota and you better bring your “A” game?
I don’t expect umps to get everything right, but when they make a call that bad, I do expect my manager, or the 3rd base coach who had the best view to run out there and let him know he got it wrong—FROM TWO DIFFERENT WAYS!
by Old Twins Cap on Oct 9, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
They said it wasn’t a call that could be viewed by replay, they just started using replays this year on homeruns, hopefully this will help propel the use of replays. Maybe do something like the NFL, have a option to review a call.

see above, Old Twins Cap, I agree. here is the cut and paste.
There is a time for arguing. And the time to argue is when you are correct. Argue politely but forcefully. It can sway the refs to make sure they understand that they hosed you and be prepared for a makeup call.
Argue like an ass, or when you are wrong and all you are doing is screwing yourself
But if Gardy couldn’t see it as hapshaugnhenssy said, I dunno, what can he do?
