SB Nation Awards: 2009 American League Rookie of the Year
Next round of the year's awards!
| Rk | Player | Team | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Elvis Andrus | Texas Rangers | 6 | 9 | 6 | 63 |
| 2 | Andrew Bailey | Oakland Athletics | 11 | 1 | 3 | 61 |
| 3 | Jeff Niemann | Tampa Bay Rays | 3 | 5 | 3 | 33 |
| 4 | Rick Porcello | Detroit Tigers | 2 | 7 | 2 | 33 |
| 5 | Brett Anderson | Oakland Athletics | 5 | 1 | 3 | 31 |
| 6 | Gordon Beckham | Chicago White Sox | 1 | 2 | 8 | 19 |
| 7 | Nolan Reimold | Baltimore Orioles | 1 | - | 1 | 6 |
| 8 | Matt Wieters | Baltimore Orioles | - | 1 | 3 | 6 |
| 9 | Brad Bergesen | Baltimore Orioles | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| 10 | Ricky Romero | Toronto Blue Jays | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| 11 | Travis Snider | Toronto Blue Jays | - | 1 | - | 3 |
I feel pretty good about these results too because, if I remember correctly, I voted pretty closely here too. I want to say I went Andrus-Bailey-Porcello. Beckham's year was underwhelming, Wieters was disappointing considering the hype and, as the tally shows, there were really only two choices for top pick.
My only question: RICK PORCELLO IS JUST 20 YEARS OLD!
Okay, so it's not a question...

Well, look at that.
Elvis Andrus is also 20 years old. Pressure’s on now, Boy Wonder. You have competition.

He beat out Mauer for the Hank Aaron award, too.

I wanted to do a really snarky post about that,
but ended up not doing it for some odd reason.

That is so wrong,
it almost makes me dislike Hank Aaron.

Sure
Jeter deserves it

Hey, he hit a major milestone
He’s now, like, 50th all time in hits!

Eh
Whatever, who cares about an voted awards. Even less meaningful than writer-voted awards…

you forget the real qualifications for awards
1. Is the player a Yankee?
2. Did the player break the Yankee record for hits?
3. Is the player a leader, on and off the field?
Based upon this, Jeter deserved to win MVP, gold glove, and Nobel Peace Prize.

I just can't believe he beat Mauer for the HA award!
I know it’s pretty meaningless in the long run, but wtf. Lame.

Interesting...
Baily got almost twice as many first-place votes as anyone else but was left off almost half the ballots. Blogosphere anti-closer bias?
By the way, I only counted 29 votes – is there a team that doesn’t have an SBNation blog, or was there one lazy blog proprietor who didn’t bother to send in his ballot?

I'd go Niemann
I’d go Niemann. Andrus’s hitting was only above average, and though his great glove made up much of the gap, he’s still a little below the others in terms of total contribution. Niemann and Bailey are virtually tied (Baily actually a run or tow ahead) but I’ll give Niemann the tiebreaker for being a starter. Porcello did well with a very poor defense behind him though.

It's Bailey
He put up elite numbers that are comparable to Mo and Joe Nathan (great WHIP, ERA and K/9).

1. Andrus, 2. Anderson, 3. Porcello
Some anti-closer bias on my part…
Andrus was far and away the ROY, IMO. His amazing defense was key to the Rangers resurgence this year. Plus he’s only 20!!!

David Price got stood up at the ROY dance

No votes for David Price, when last season a lot of people were expecting him and Matt Wieters to be surefire bets for rookie of the year. Funny how things turn out sometimes.

I'm disturbed by how much I would love to have that necklace.
by fischean on Nov 12, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That necklace might be too expensive for you
Because if you took the necklace, it would be Price-less!
Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all offseason.
