Did Dock Ellis Pitch a No-No on LSD?

Star-divide

From Big League Stew. This video was made based on an interview Ellis did. According to Dock, the no-hitter he pitched against the San Diego Padres, on June 12, 1970, was done while he was "High as a Georgia pine." Is it even possible to pitch a no-hitter while on acid?

Ellis said, "I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria. I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me."

I would pay money for a video tape

or even an audio tape of this game. There should be some evidence in the public record to see how “wired” the good Doctor seemed on this night.

And given that Doc once hit the first four (or five, or six) Cincinnati Reds in a game as his private vendetta against the Big Red Machine, I would say he has earned a level of credibility when it comes to being off his rocker.

Update

There is an online petition to get the MLB Network to play the video of that game.

Sometimes I think Delmon Young is on LSD

It would explain the routes he takes to get to fly balls and why he always swings at balls outside of the zone…

(Ok, maybe that was a little mean.)

Ummm, no.

Not mean at all. Think of watching him stumble around in left field, that will erase any guilt you may have.

If I had to bet on any Twins using a substance while on the field

It’d probably be Guerrier. I mean, the hair and the soul patch. He looked like the guys that used to sell mushrooms around campus.

Does Tim Tebow wear jorts?

Did Wade Boggs really drink 32 beers on a cross-country flight?

Did Sarah Palin really “go rogue”?
