Joe Mauer wins Silver Slugger

Exactly nobody is surprised, as Mauer is about as good at the plate as any other two AL catchers combined.

This is Mauer's third Silver Slugger, and second in a row.  He still has a ways to go to catch Mike Piazza, though - Piazza leads all catchers with ten awards.

Who's this Joe Mauer kid?

He sounds pretty impressive. The Twins should look into getting him. Long term, preferably.

Duh

Gold Glove + Silver Slugger = MVP?

The other players who can say that this year in the AL are Hunter, Jeter, Teixeira. Correct me if I missed one.

Mauer would have had the silver slugger at any position this year. How did he not get the Hank Aaron award?

I feel bad for Aaron...

The award is so ridiculous and absurd. They keep changing how the winner is selected. Nobody pays any attention to it. Worse yet, they actually make Hank participate in the presentation of the award.

How IS the winner selected?

I was under the impression that the HA award was given to the best hitter, but clearly that’s not the case. How do they pick?

Internet vote

I’m surprised Stephen Colbert didn’t win this year. :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hank_Aaron_Award

In 1999 it was mathematics, from 2000-2003 it was sportscasters…

Since then, its been internet voting under three different sets of voting rules.

I appreciate the idea of a “Best Hitter Award” but MLB has turned the whole thing into a marketing gimmick.

Hmm. That's interesting (and unfortunately, kind of dumb as well).

Colbert should have made a push for it. Give the HA award the Colbert Bump. :)
