Twins Hope To Have Mauer Deal Done By Christmas
The Twins realize they need to sign Joe soon. They've been in contact with Mauer's agent, Ron Shapiro, and there are indications the team hopes to have a new deal with Mauer by Christmas.

What a lovely Christmas present to Twins fans that would be.
Get it done.

Thanks for posting this
After reading the articles, it makes me more optimistic Joe will stay.

Mauer is in an interesting position
From all accounts, its not about the money, but rather its about being somewhere where he can win.
Doesn’t it follow then that he has to take a hometown discount to stay? The more money the Twins spend on him, the harder it becomes to spend the kind of cash to attract complimentary pieces from outside the organization.
Tom Brady took less
because he was promised that the team would take the discount and spend it wisely to help the team. Lo and behold they signed a certain someone named Randy Moss.
The real question here is will the organization promise to spend a discount to get Mauer some serious help? So far, I would say Bill Smith has been trying…

They should explicitly state
that they’ll spend all the money he doesn’t take on one of Sheets, Bedard, or Harden.
Maybe they say this privately to Mauer
but it wouldn’t make sense to state this desire publicly, or explicitly.

+1
The reason they’re so tight lipped about their plans is opening up puts them in a tougher negotiating position.

Mauer's bargaining position
If I was him, I wouldn’t take less in hopes they’ll get better players. I’d take all the money I could get, and hire my own players.
He’s got great leverage — they can’t let him go right after getting a new stadium. I say, hold em over a barrel, Joe, then hire Sheets or Harden with your own money!
I wonder what else he could do to ensure he’s not playing for an also ran forever. Make them put in writing a commitment to a minimum payroll each year? Like, he gets X amount, plus the difference between their payroll and a hundred million (if the payroll is lower, that is)?
What Joe Can Do?
What Mauer can do is sign a contract for, say, $20 million a year for 5-6-7 years. But starting in two years, he can opt out of the contract and explore the free agent market if he doesn’t feel the team is being competitive. How that is worded and who decides, if either has a buyout option, is up to the agents and lawyers. But his intent can be to remain a Twin, but it would be ncie to have an opt-out if the team is dismal.
Of course, he can have a “no trade” clause that keeps him from being marketed to other teams. As long as he is healthy, he is a valuable player, no matter what the cost, in a trade. You think the Yankees or Red Sox wouldn’t trade for three years of a $150 million contract in a couple of seasons. It might be a bargain then!
Plus, if the Twins aren’t competitive in three years, watch for a significant drop in attendance as well as television/radio viewers, thus lower ad revenue et al. Could they afford to keep him if his salary suddenly becomes 30% of payroll rather than 20%.

The Beard speaketh...
I had no doubt Mauer would win the MVP, and neither did you.
I have no doubt Mauer will be a Twin for at least the next 5 years.

And on the seventh day, The Beard rested.

Does that make The Beard
Baby Jesus’ Father?
Well...
Kubes is older than Mauer. :\

so whats new with Uggla and Nolasco?
Vikings 4 the superbowl
Thrylos98 or whatever hasn't posted a thing on twitter
I did look through his twitter account and it seems he predicted the Hardy deal… though I’ll admit it was Nostradomas type vague, so he may have gotten lucky… who knows. But what I do know is no one else is reporting on it anywhere. Nolasco/Uggla is definitely a fit for the Twins (depending on the price and I’d imagine the Mauer talks if Ramos is involved)… so who knows…
If he’s got legit info, I’d love to know where he’s getting it from, and it would be nice if he posted an update. So far though, complete silence, so I wouldn’t put much stock in it. If a major trade was brewing for right after the holliday, I’d think there would be some rumors on it by now.

Give Joe a Present!
Twins Management, wrap a big ribbon around the Metrodome and give him the real estate to sign!

One, the Twins don't own it
and two, it might be barely worth more than a half million dollars.
Did you hear about that stadium in Detroit being sold for $585,000? Yikes.
Yep. Seriously
how does the Silverdome go for that little? Seems like there would be some use for the stadium…

Apparently the downside is that it costs
1.5 million dollars annually for upkeep.
Its more likely to be a money pit than anything useful.
$100,000K bonus
For winning the MVP, can buy Mauer a few new toys for the cabin. Maybe even a new riding mower.

Oh, please, let it be *before* Christmas.
Another month of stress might kill me.

Maybe the Twins and Mauer can get each other the same present
Mauer (opening present): Aw shucks, you got me a multi-year contract extension!
Bill Smith (opening present): Hey, you got me a multi-year extension on your contract! Great!

Anyone watch the Wild game tonight?
Joe Mauer dropped the puck and then shook hands with Mikko Koivu. It’s like tonight took place in my fantasy dreams. Justin Morneau led the “Let’s Play Hockey!” to top it all off.

I’m pretty sure that was Adam Sandler and Jeff Daniels you saw.
