"I am going to create a lot of RBIs for Morneau, the catcher and the other guy."
Today's trade of Carlos Gomez for J.J. Hardy ends an era of hilariously bad English. As the Twins add to their ever-growing list of players whose names begin with the letter J (double points for Hardy!), I thought it might be fun to take a look back at Gomez's Twins career. What is your favorite Gomez memory/quote/moment?
For me, the highlight of Gomez's time with the Twins has to be the 2008 game where he hit for the cycle. In an early May 2008 game, Gomez became the first Twin in 22 years to hit for the cycle. Gomez was also the first Twin to cap off his cycle with a single since Lyman Bostok, pictured below in 1976:
As you can see, it was a different era of baseball.
(Side note - talk about a bizarre game. Gomez hits for the cycle, Nick Punto gets 5 consecutive home runs 5 RBIs, and Livan Hernandez(!) took a shutout into the 9th inning).
Gomez's cycle began with his leadoff homerun in the 1st. Rather than the usual home run trot, Gomez dashed around the bases, clearly excited. When asked about it after the game, Gomez explained: "The game today started too late. I say, ‘Let me run the bases quick so the game goes fast.’"
That game is a symbol of Gomez to me. It offers many examples of his unique style of English. It epitomizes the promise that Gomez has, the excitement that Twins fans felt for what Gomez might become.
While Gomez still arguably has that potential, he failed to realize it in 2009. Here's hoping that Go-Go develops into the player we thought he could be, even if it doesn't happen with the Twins.

Haha, you are awesome.
I’m still going with “I see the ball, I hit the ball!” as my favorite. His smile and broken English…just classic. Though I have to say, his reaction to running across the plate in game 163 was pretty great, too. Just so much excitement!
And who is “the other guy”? Morneau, Mauer, and…?

it is obviously LNP

Also
“Kiss it, talk to it, smell, whatever. My first at-bat I talk to it and say, ‘Come on, give me something now.’ If I get a base hit, the next time I talk to it and I kiss it. I look at the spot where I hit the ball and it smells like fire.”

That one is also great
Sadly, you can’t do much bat kissing as a defensive replacement.

yeah really
it could be Kubel or Cuddyer
not to mention Denard Span even though he is leadoff…
Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?

I genuinely liked Gomez.
I think had Span not come into spring training light in ‘08 light years ahead of where we expected him to be (remember, back in those days, when it looked like he really wasn’t going to pan out?), then our relationship with Carlos would have been a lot different. As it stands, I truly believe he’ll improve with regular playing time, and we’re not in a position to give it to him. I think he’ll succeed with the Brewers, I really do, and I wish him all the best.

That would have made for some funny headlines.
“Mets trade Gomez to Twins for starting pitcher.”

LMAO
Thatd b pretty funny.
SportsCenter would have 24/7 coverage of that story.
John Anderson- Lets send it to Mort over in New York
Mort- Hey John, Here’s what I’ve learned. The Mets have traded their entire future to the Twins in Carlos Gomez. They’ve gotten a SP named ummm uhhh ahh heres his name. Johan Santino ( The J is pronounced with a Juhh sound)
JA- Well I dont know what the Mets are going to do without Gomez but heres to hoping that Jojo Santamonica will turn out for the Mets.

Regarding this trade S.I. quotes Gomez as saying:
“Last year, I can’t do nothing about it, because I didn’t play every day,” Gomez said. “You don’t play every day, it’s tough.”

He's right, though.
You can’t get better if you don’t get the chance to work at it. Poor GoGo. I hope he finds better luck with the Brewers.

It must have been a frustrating year for him
Really, if he was only going to be used as a defensive replacement, he should have been in AAA to get everyday playing time.

Hey........
ultimately you make the American League minimum and get service time. Win-win sitting on the bench. Better than riding buses in upstate New York.

The first time I saw Gomez
was in Spring Training, one of the very first games in 2008 against the Red Sox. First inning, Pedroia was on second. Ortiz hits a ground ball up the middle and into center for a base hit. Pedroia wheels around third and heads for home. Gomez charges the ball and comes up throwing, a laser, right to the plate and Mauer tags out Pedroia sliding in.
Everyone on the field looked around like, “What the fuck was that?”
Later Gomez scored from first on a bloop down the right field line, running like the wind around third in that gallop-horse style of his. He’s an exciting player.
But, you know what? That throw he made in ST of ‘08 was the best throw he made his entire career. In fact, I never saw him even make even a good throw after that. His throws were erratic, and he crow-hopped like a Vaudeville performer. Whether he got too excited and squeezed the ball or just tried to do too much, Gomez’ awesome outfield arm potential never really came through for the Twins. And that includes this year’s ALDS Game 2 in NY when Nathan chucked it into CF trying to pick off Brett Gardner, who was the winning run at that point. Gardner got up and headed to 3B. A good throw from Gomez and Gardner would have been toast.
So maybe that’s my ultimate take on his stay in Minnesota: a ton of potential, a world of talent, a boatload of excitement, but in the end, precious few special moments, especially when it counted.

Shame about that whole hitting thing...
Cuz otherwise he was a blast. I’m no scout, but watching him over the last two years I came to the conclusion that he’s just not a major league hitter and isn’t likely to become one. If swinging really hard was the key, he’d be golden, but he just didn’t seem to have anything else besides that. He doesn’t seem to have improved at all from his first-year with the Mets. I’m ready to give up on him, fun-factor and all.
But he’s young I guess and if the Brewers get through to him he’ll be an impact player. Just putting the ball in play consistently would make him a force with his speed.

I'm gonna miss that guy
he was a bad hitter, poor bunter, and took terrible routes to fly balls, but damn it he was fun to watch

My favorite Gomez memories
1.) The cycle against the sox
2.) The pissing off of Cliff Lee
3.) Any postgame interview

That is also hilarious. Awww, Gomez. :(

Going to miss Gomez...
But he’ll have much more success in Milwaukee than he could ever have had in Minnesota. I’m greatly looking forward to seeing him mature as a ballplayer. I say he’ll be an All-Star by 2012.

Gomez
Started 2008 fine, fine, fine. Nice bunting. Stole like 7 bases the first month — though he’d steal; 50-60-70 for the eyar, right?
Played hard in the outfield.
Was enthusiastic.
Killer smile.
Remember the jaws dropping when people stood in line for two hours for his signature — “Hey, it’s nothing but two circles!”
And he didn’t get frustrated sitting on the bench in 2009.
Hope he tears up the National League. But he now gives Delmon a year to shine (and the Twins can make a decision on this guy then).
