Alberto Callaspo
Kansas City has Alberto Callaspo on the trading block. He's a pretty solid bat as a second baseman and he seemed to have a some pop everytime I've had a chance to see him. I don't know exactyl what the Royals may be demanding in return, but they did mention they might be looking for help behind the plate. Maybe the the Twins should make a run at him. A combination of Hardy and Callaspo in the middle of the infield sounds nice to me.

Callaspo
Not a “Twins type” MI. He got into some type of scrape in his original organization (beating his girlfriend?) and the Royals announcers made a point of criticizing his defense at the end of the season when they were analyzing the team’s future. He can hit, especially RH, and he isn’t even arb eligible, I think.

Plus
he walks more than he strikesout. A bit of power. Good average. WOuld give us a little less range when combined with Hardy. But workable.
But considering he’s one of the top five players…who the Twins give in return that strengthens the Royals, eh? casilla, Young and Perkins…three hasbeens from Minnesota for Callaspo and DeJesus. Hell, the Twins would have to offer soemthing like Harris, Young and Blackburn and still get a no-way.
I like the thought od DeJesus. He’s the type of player you can only hope Delmon Young develops into. But with DeJesus you know that he ahs, Delmon is still thinking he can be.

I'd take him in a heartbeat.
I have always liked him, since before the Royals got him. I don’t think he defense is any worse than Punto’s. His defense has always been avearge or a little above. It did slip some last year, though.
I haven’t heard anything about the off-field rumors. If they’re true, the Twins will have no interest.

What are the Royals doing?
He’s the third-best position player on the team (behind Butler and DeJesus), he’s young, and he’s cheap. That’s the kind of guy you hang on to.

they're thinking he may turn into Alexi Casilla really quick
it could happen rather easily actually he played over his head the past year and a half + IMHO.
Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?

Me too
It would depend on what KC is asking for in return. Jose Morales? Sure, I’d do it. This makes little sense from KC’s standpoint.

Jose Morales
It would essentially be a one for one. I would be in favor, but it won’t be done.

Pedro Feliz
What about Feliz at 3rd? Good glove. Iffy bat. Reasonably priced. Any thoughts?

Not interested
the bat isn’t iffy, it’s bad. It’s consistently bad.

he's Crede
but he stays healthy.
Ok, thats not true anymore. His glove is no longer as valuable. Between the two, guessing they make about the same next year, would I rather have Feliz? maybe? I don’t know.
by Milt on Tilt on Nov 9, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather take a chance on Crede than sign Feliz.
At least Crede has value when he’s healthy. Feliz is going the wrong way.

the health
of Crede was so darn frustrating. I can’t imagine that Gardy wants him back. Never knowing if you could pencil him in the lineup.

In that case….I choose Beltre!

Given his injury history, I think the question is -
do the Twins have the balls to sign Beltre?
by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Nov 10, 2009 8:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No, no, no
They need to just sack up and sign the guy.

Do the Twins have the Huevos?
Will they turn their heads and cough up the dough?
If not, who will be the third sacker?

Trading for Callaspo
would be another great move by Bill Smith. If we could trade Jose Morales and Matt Tolbert/Alexi Casilla to the Brewers for Alberto Callaspo, that would be an excellent move. Trading Morales gives them the catcher they want – a very promising bat and a not so bad defender. Matt Tolbert would also give them some flexibility in that infield while also promising them a fairly young promising utility man.
Plus, trading for Callaspo would come at a significantly lower price than Dan Uggla. Callaspo may not have Uggla’s power, but he does a good job at getting on base and certainly is a better defender than Uggla. Plus, Callaspo would be a cheaper option both in terms of prospects and money, allowing the Twins to splurge on Mauer and re-sign Crede, and possibly sign a veteran pitcher.
Callaspo would solve 2B for the Twins. This would give the Twins the opportunity to sign Crede back, and move Punto and Harris to 3B.
Lineup construction would then look like this:
1. Span – CF
2. Callaspo – 2B
3. Mauer – C
4. Morneau – 1B
5. Cuddyer – RF
6. Kubel – DH
7. Young – LF
8. Hardy – SS
9. Punto/Harris/Crede – 3B

the trouble is
would the Royals be willing to trade within their division? If so, then absolutely, we should go after him. If not, then I am fine with Punto at second base, re-signing Crede, and spending the rest of the money (not committed to Mauer) to signing a veteran pitcher, i.e. Pavs, Washburn, Sheets, Harden, Bedard, Garland…

The Royals just swung a deal with the White Sox, so they’re probably not opposed to trading within the division as long as the deal suits their needs. I’ve had my eye on Callaspo since 2008, but didn’t really consider it likely until I saw he was on the block.
by dangerl33 on Nov 9, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
This is true
the Twins should really jump on this trade. Gardy has basically guaranteed Punto a spot, so trading for Callaspo would move Punto to 3B, and if they could re-sign Crede, it would be good.
Twins should address the Royals needs: A good hitting and fielding C – I would even consider trading Wilson Ramos (consider not trade). Bill Smith seems to be willing to trade for the Twins needs and seems to be willing to trade to the other team’s needs in order to fill the Twins needs!
However, because Callaspo is a good player, this limits the Twins chances of trading for him. Teahan was not an especially good player and neither were the Sox players. Trading good players within the division is harder than trading crappy players.

Actually
If Callaspo was added to the Twins current infield, he would probably be the third baseman. He played there some for the Royals, and much like Harris, his lack of range shows less at third.

I could see us signing Ben Sheets
to a contract similar to what Crede got this year, only it would have to inlcude more years or at least an option for 2011 or even 2012………..
However, the Base salary would probably start at around 5 mill not 3.5 or whatever Mr. Crede and Boras accomplished.
A good trade with K.C. for Callaspo might be Alexi Casilla, Luke Hughes, and Glen Perkins
Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?

That's way too much for Callaspo. He's not that good.
by Jesse on Nov 10, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
however
are not Casilla, Hughes and Perkins expendable if we trade for Callaspo? Hughes and Casilla play 2B and we want to get rid of Perkins. I would think that this deal would be for Callaspo plus a prospect. I pretty fair swap.

Perkins is too much for Callaspo
Casilla plus would be fine but the plus would have to be not much. You don’t trade starting pitchers for second basemen.

Perkins

Not bad.....
Just jaded. He will still be able to pitch somewhere and, because he throws left, sometime.
Sometimes players have to stop thinking about the future and what they want to be (a millionaire and a starter).
Still brings back memories of Frankie Rodriguez, who complained when the Twins moved him to the bullpen that he wanted to be a starter instead, because they made more money. Hey, staying in the majors makes you money and playing good and doing your job gives you a carear (hear that, Luis Ayala).
If perkins gains arbitration and gets released, he’ll be signing somewhere for major-league-minimum to $600,000, a far cry from the million he thinks he deserves. Or he might kick around on a split contract.
But he will pitch again and again and again…lefthanders never die unless their arm pops.

I don't think there's a realistic chance of this happening.
He’s a good player, and it’s hard to trade good players inside your league much less your division.
Besides, it’s been mentioned before, I don’t like Callaspo’s makeup. I don’t want guys with his kind of history playing for the Twins, I just don’t. He falls under the same category as Manny Ramirez—no thanks.

How about Kelly Johnson
Another buy-low candidate. Had an off year, almost completely because of his low BABIP. If that comes back, he is an average to above average second basemen. He also looks like he’s lost his job after Prado’s strong year last year. Basically the same situation as hardy. If we could get him for cheap, might be a good option.

KJ
He’s even a good outfielder in the corners. Would be great pick up for the twins and should come cheap. He is often mentioned as a non-tender candidate. A bullpen arm should be enough, maybe crain.

Agreed...
I’d love Kelly Johnson as well. He’d be my top 2b target.
I think Crain and a decent OF prospect could get it done.

I'm not all that fond of his defense

2010 Projection
Bill James projects him for a 350 wOBA. His career UZR/150 is -7. This projects to a 2.5 WAR or an above average starter. I think sometimes we get too caught up in where a player’s value comes from. I’d be willing to field an entire team that hit and fielded like Albert Pujols. I’d also be willing to field an entire team that hit and fielded like Ozzie Smith.

Another option
Felipe Lopez…
not sure how much he’ll command, but projects about the same as KJ, about 2.5 WAR.
If we sign only one free agent, I really think it should be an infielder. We have starters who all project to be at least 1 WAR, where tolbert/Valencia look like replacement level at this point. I just don’t think that people realize that a 5.00 ERA pitcher is more valuable than a tolbert/harris type infielder. The biggest hole is either at 2nd or 3rd, and would give us the best value for our money, since we’d be replacing an inferior player.
by lookatthosetwins on Nov 10, 2009 3:56 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Agreed...
Other than perhaps a trade for Kelly Johnson (depending on price) Felipe Lopez would be my top option. He had both the highest OPS and highest OBP in 2009 of all the FA 2b candidates out there, and he’s likely to cost less than at least a few of them. I’d sign him to a 1-2 year deal for $4-5 M if he’d oblige.
by DJSkillz on Nov 10, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If this is even close to the truth, the Twins should jump all over this. We could give them a better backup catcher if that’s what they want in Jose Morales.

As far as character goes...
I am not a fan of the issues Callaspo has, and the baggage he would bring, but look at Delmon Young, if I remember correctly he threw a bat at an Umpire…Look at Sidney Ponson…no those accusations aren’t as bad as a Domestic, but still they have taken chances in the past. I don’t like the idea, but I wouldn’t look past it if nothing else is open…
