SB Nation Awards: 2009 American League Manager of the Year
Just like every year, the site managers of SB Nation get together and cast votes for the season's four biggest awards: Manager of the Year, Rookie of the Year, MVP and Cy Young. Today, the results are in for MoY.
| Rk | Manager | Team | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mike Scioscia | Los Angeles Angels | 9 | 8 | 3 | 72 |
| 2 | Ron Gardenhire | Minnesota Twins | 9 | 5 | 1 | 61 |
| 3 | Don Wakamatsu | Seattle Mariners | 6 | 3 | 8 | 47 |
| 4 | Joe Girardi | New York Yankees | 2 | 4 | 2 | 24 |
| 5 | Ron Washington | Texas Rangers | 1 | 4 | 4 | 21 |
| 6 | Terry Francona | Boston Red Sox | 1 | 1 | 3 | 11 |
| 7 | Jim Leyland | Detroit Tigers | - | 2 | 4 | 10 |
| 8 | Joe Maddon | Tampa Bay Rays | - | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| 9 | Ozzie Guillen | Chicago White Sox | - | - | 1 | 1 |
| 10 | Trey Hillman | Kansas City Royals | - | - | 1 | 1 |
I have a hard time arguing the findings on this list, because if I recall correctly the top three coaches are the ones I actually voted for. (It was either that, or Gardenhire-Wakamatsu-Washington...it was a while ago.) Even if Don Wakamatsu had won, I wouldn't complain--he got one hell of a performance from a team that probably shouldn't have had the kind of season they had.

Death of a young Star Pitcher on Opening Day
Makes me have to give it to Scioscia

It is sad.
I just hope it doesn’t effect the BBWAA vote much. Or they give it to Girardi because he won the WS. That run in September to steal the Central Division from the Tigers should count for something. Personally, I like Gardy and I’m glad he’s here ’til 2011 at least.

Not only Adenhart's death
The Angels also had a lot of injuries to overcome.
But then again, so did the Twins.

Pretty sure the vote was done before the playoffs
As with MVP, CY, etc. The fact that NY won the World Series shouldn’t be a factor.

Wow!
So many votes for Gardy. I guess for all of our moaning, Gardy isn’t so bad! I think the problem a lot of times is that he is so clearly not perfect that it’s maddening. The reality is that no manager is and, comparably, we really aren’t doing so badly. He gets a lot out of his guys, for whatever reason, and they all seem pretty content to play for him. I’ll take it.

Yeah
A lot of days one would swear that the majority of posters this board feel that he is mentally challenged. Maybe it is a family thing. It is okay for us to criticize him, but for a national poll then he is “our Gardy” and we like him.

I think he did a good job in spite of himself
Coming from 3 games back with four to play is worth a lot.

Always the bridesmaid
While I cannot argue with Scioscia winning this year, or Wakamatsu, I feel bad for Gardy. This will probably be the 5th year he finishes in 2nd place. It might even be to 5 different managers. It definitely portrays the Twins this decade…pretty damn good, but there is always someone just a little bit better.

Jim Leyland got votes?
Didn’t he, like, choke the Division away to you guys in the last week?
