Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

And so it begins...

Star-divide

I'm not surprised that Mauer has told the Twins he wants a deal done before the start of next season. I think that this puts more pressure on the Twins to get it done now that this is public. Mauer is one of the few Twins to get national attention and so it's normal for the national media to want to know if Mauer will stay in MN or will they get the chance to show how smart they are and guess who will get to sign him (where is the sarcasm font when you need it?).

The story seems to think that Mauer will get more than Jeter but less than ARod money. I have no idea if that is right but I do agree with the story on this point, If Mauer becomes a free agent the Twins have no chance in signing him. The Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and Dodgers all could use a catcher in 2011. Or Torii and the Angels could come out of nowhere and make a bid. I can not imagine any of the larger market teams passing on the chance to sign Mauer.

I hope the Twins are able to sign Mauer to a long term deal. It would be very hard to see him play for any other team but I know that it could happen. I'm just hoping it doesn't.

This story

is just piffle and fluff. Mauer has said that he has not set a deadline to an extension.

No reason to hit the panic button.

"according to a source"

Not too concerning. :\

I’m sticking with the ‘contract done before Christmas’ idea. He’s said many times that “it’ll happen when it happens”.

All good points

but the “media circus” and second guessing will now start…I blame offseason boredom…but it still brings home the idea of what if it doesn’t happen or when will it happen..

Getting it done by Christmas sounds nice but this isn’t a Disney movie where we will all run down to the tree Christmas morning and find a HOF catcher signed for 8 years…well may fischean will but the rest of us will have to just dream…

All I'm saying is...

Mauer’s stated time and again that he’s not going to put a deadline out there, and things will just happen when they do. I truly believe he will be signed by Christmas, to a probable 7ish year deal. Call me naive, but for whatever reason, I still have faith in this organization to do the right thing, and that they will prevent Mauer from becoming a free agent.

this is really a non-story

don’t the Twins also have a policy of not negotiating during the season?

To an extent

but Mauer has clearly stated in the past that he doesn’t want to negotiate during the season.
