Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

SATURDAY, 9:26pm: The Twins acquired righty Chris Province from the Red Sox for Bonser, according to a press release. It should also be noted that the Sox signed Bonser for 2010.

Looks like a nobody to me

As a 24 year old in AA, about 80 innings with a very low K rate, unimpressive BB rate and quite hittable, altogether for a 3.66 FIP. However he did post a 2.60 ERA.

I think this is kind of interesting, in the way it highlights how both clubs evaluate talent. I’m sure Theo Epstein crunched the numbers to realize that Province had little chance to make much of an impact. Bill Smith and the Twins, being one of two clubs who don’t use sabermetrics (according to Aaron Gleeman), saw that he pitched nearly 80 innings with a low ERA and a low career walk rate, and maybe the scouts liked what they saw.

If anything, this provides a pretty good basis for a discussion on the two clubs differences.

The Hochevar Principle: The future comes to all teams. Some teams wait for it. Those teams finish in last place a lot.
