Dear Santa: Can I add Aroldis Chapman to my wish list? Of course, a contract for Joe Mauer comes first. Then Kouzmanoff, then Chapman, then Jed Lowrie. Can I please Santa, can I please?

Would be nice.

And it’s good to hear we’re taking a look at Chapman. But if the Red Sox already offered him $15.5 MM, I’m not seeing how we get him, especially since we’re already spending quite a bit more than we have in the past.

I don't know how the Sox offer is structured

If it’s a one-time signing bonus, then, yeah, I can’t see how we could afford him. But if it’s a three-year contract offer or some such, I’d say that’s a bargain. Consider what Strasburg signed for and you can see that a kid like Chapman ought to be worth at least $18 million over three years. As good as Stasburg is, I rate Chapman much higher than Strasburg. His closest comp is David Price. But he throws even harder than Price.

I'd agree

But Smith’s comments were pretty pessamistic (‘course, they always are). It would be surprising though if the Twins signed him since, I would assume, he’d have to spend at least one year in the minors.

Strasburg

is much more highly rated than Chapman. Chapman has awful command and has really struggled against top competition. There are also a lot of doubts as to whether he’ll ever be a starter

I can’t believe that kind of money is being considered for what is basically a prospect.

by sploorp on Dec 20, 2009 1:25 AM EST up reply actions

I could see him in the bullpen at some point this year

But I assume they would start him at AA.

I cant imagine this team with the following players:

Span – CF
Lowrie – 2B
Mauer – C
Morneau – 1B
Cuddyer – RF
Kubel – DH
Kouzmanoff – 3B
Hardy – SS
Young – LF

Chapman
Nathan
Baker
Slowey
Blackburn
etc….

Jed Lowrie

If the Twins wanted to get Lowrie, shouldn’t they have done the deal with Boof…say Boof and Plouffe for Lowrie and Province?

I thought of that

I wouldn’t be surprised if they had wider ranging discussions with Theo and co. But they only had 72 hours to do something with Boof, so they made it a on-for-one. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep talking about Lowrie, though. He doesn’t have a role with that team and he’s got some value to a team looking to upgrade in the middle.

Chapman

Kevin Goldstein would have him as the #1 prospect on 20+ teams. 100mph LHP are vanishingly rare. He needs some development buth I’d love to have the Twins sign him. Mauer>Chapman>Kouz>Lowrie.

quadfacta ftw

If we get all four of those guys…best offseason ever?

um

YES! Imagine having a rotation of both Chapman and Gibson in 2012-13!

No, he didn't

Goldstein said he’d be in the top 11 for 20+ teams, not that he’d be the number 1 guy for 20+ teams.

whoops

You’re right. I think I read Keith Law had him as a top 10 free agent and somehow I combined the statements. Here’s a rundown on Chapman’s stuff. http://www.baseball-intellect.com/aroldis-chapman-everything-you-need-to-know/

He isn't a 100 mph pitcher

His stuff typically clocks in somewhere in the low to mid-nineties. He hit 102 on the radar gun ONCE during the WBC.

by sploorp on Dec 20, 2009 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

Point is, he can hit 102

Most guys sit around 90 and can hit 93-94 once in a while. He sits at 94 and can hit 100 once in a while. Those kind of left handers are really rare.

Doug signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers. So sorry.

If they get him, Kouzmanoff, and a bench bat and of course sign mauer and call it an offseason. I would be more than satisfied…. In fact compared to previous offseasons I am already satisfied. I am confident we will get one more IF and a Mauer extention but another top prospect = super cool. Where would he rank on our list? Would we just have to do a poll as what rank he should slide into?

Behind Gibson

I agree. Considering the Twins already have two of the highest upside players in baseball, Jean and Gibson, adding Chapman would really be amazing.

I'm still unsure about the whole 15 million offer

All I’ve read is that the Red Sox have offered 15 million. But how is that structured? How much is up front and how much would he be paid per year and for how many years? 15 million might turn out to not be as bad as it sounds.

Oh, the latest is that Lowell has a torn ligament in his thumb and won’t be getting traded to the Rangers after all. I would guess that pretty much takes the Red Sox out of the 3rd base market. I would also imagine that 3rd basemen just got a whole lot cheaper as well.

by sploorp on Dec 20, 2009 1:07 AM EST reply actions

Well, if Lowell is injured, the Red Sox still need a third baseman, no?
