Wow.

That’s gotta be one of the more depressing trades I’ve seen.

The Mariners really aren’t fooling around though, are they?

They might have

even if they get the Cubs’ Milton Bradley

by ckb on Dec 18, 2009 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Ugly

I know that the Cubs were desperate to get rid of Bradley, and they’d have to take on some cash and/or bad contracts to get rid of him, but Silva has been irredeemably awful three of the last four years and is owed more money than Bradley. This might be worse for the Cubs than just releasing Bradley – they lose money, and they’re stuck with a pitcher who isn’t all that great a bet to be above replacement level.

Seattle kicked in $$$

Cubs save a little cash, but not much. Seattle essentially gets Bradley for 2 years, $6M

by DJL44 on Dec 18, 2009 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Wait.....

aren’t they paying $15 mill a year for Milton?

Subtract out Silva's contract (which was higher than Bradley's)

Add back in the cash they sent the Cubs. Silva was a sunk cost.

by DJL44 on Dec 18, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Good explanation

I’m not sure Carlos Silva has any value at all right now, and if the Mariners are going to be the contenders that they’re looking like at this point, having Silva take up roster space is not useful. This way, they basically get the equivalent of a discounting two-year free agent signing in exchange for releasing Silva.

Another great deal for M's

Zdurincek sure knows what the hell he’s doing.

by JTW on Dec 18, 2009 4:22 PM EST reply actions

Good deal for the M's

Something for nothing is always a good flip even if the something is a headcase.

Seattle has about 10 million left to spend to get to their usual payroll level maybe 20 million if they’re going back to 2008 levels.

Fun time to be a Mariners fan.

Silva

First of all what were the M’s thinking giving Silva all that money. He stinks, he always did and always will. I was overjoyed when the Twins got rid of him. Now The M’s bring in Milton Bradly?? he is not worth the trouble he brings. He has been playing now for what 8 seasons or so and has been on a dozen teams, Cliff Lee good aquisiton, Milton Bradley not so good.

I agree with your sentiments regarding bradly

but dude, the M’s got somebody to take Silva off there hands!

It’s probably too soon to call Zdurincek a genius, but damn, that guy is a genius!

+1

Admittedly, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to fleece the Cubs. But this is quite a trick for Seattle — it never even occured to me that Silva could be traded to anyone. Bradley’s a nut, but Lee could always bean him. Bradley can hit, and even if he couldn’t, it was addition by subtraction to get rid of Silva. (And I say that as someone who ADORED Silva and was devestated when he became ineffective. I hope that he somehow rediscovers his sinker in Chicago, even though I know it won’t happen.)

If I were an M’s fan I’d be doing the Snoopy Dance right about now. Hell, I might do it anyway — now there’s at least a chance the Wild Card could come out of the West, which would guarantee that if we made it to the postseason, we wouldn’t face the Fuckin’ Yankees in the DS. :snoopy dance:

Pay and Play

Keeping SIlva anywhere reminds me of the Minnesota Twins and Joe Mays. You have so much money tied up in the guy, you figure out a way to keep playing him.

That’s the luxury teams, like the Yankees, have in the sport of baseball. If they have a dead cog in their machine, they can pay but not play the guy…go out and spend millions to replace millions sent to the waiver wire.

HA

Joe Mays, I wonder what hes doing. Ya know cuz Kyle Lohse has revived himself(or dave duncan has revived him) in St. Louis. I say just for old time sake we somehow get Joe Mays, Carlos Silva, Kyle Lohse, Brad Radke, and Johan Santana. Wouldn’t that be great…I mean for a little while, definitely not the whole season though NO. Idk think I could take more than a month of that, but it would be cool, nostalgia purposes mainly.

Lohse

Not sure where he got the vibe in 2008. But it got him some big $$$. 2009 was typical Kyle.

Man, the TWINS did field that rotation at one time. Wow!

And just like the White Sux.....

The Cubbies mediocre play from over payed talent continues! Enjoy that Silva guys!

Silva's not even mediocre

He’s terrible and he was starting to throw teammates under the bus, badmouthing them to the press. I think Griffey might be the ying to Bradley’s yang and balance things out.

by DJL44 on Dec 19, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yea

I think that exactly. There’s is to many people to keep Bradley In-line in Seattle.
