Not so fast on that Mauer deadline Yahoo
Looking like perhaps another "Creative" moment in the highly respected (note sarcasim) Yahoo Sports newsroom. Could it be, they have telepathy and found out about the deadline before Mauer had thought of it? Inquierer Minds want to know! From the Sporting News.
Joe Mauer denies setting deadline for contract talks
SportingNews staff reports Dec 1, 7:16 pm EST
American League MVP Joe Mauer on Tuesday denied a Yahoo! Sports report that said Mauer had set a deadline of opening day for contract negotiations with the Minnesota Twins. Mauer can become a free agent after next season.
Mauer texted the Twins’ Web site and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune to respond to the report. He told the Star-Tribune, "(T)hat’s news to me." He told the team’s Web site: "I’m not going to react to every story/rumor that comes out or comment on any negotiations. As far as that report, I don’t know where that came from."
Last week, at a press conference announcing his MVP award, Mauer said he didn’t need to get a deal done by a certain time. The Twins reportedly would like to complete a deal with Mauer by Christmas.

The Tale of Joe
is probably the best
storyout there for the national media.
I’m not surprised that Yahoo had this report. With the Winter Meetings next week, Yahoo and other sites I’m sure will be trying real hard to create some Buzz…
I think he would be the top FA going into 2011 if the Twins didn’t sign him. And I still think that the Twins have to do it now b/c they won’t be able to compete with other clubs once he becomes a FA. This actually reminds me of what the media did on the Santana / Twins contract.
Thanks for the update.
I thought the last post on this was premature. Joe wants to stay in MN, it will happen.

it depends if they can sign him
Mauer could be worth 30M a year on the FA market. He might take less from the Twins, but how much less? Can they afford to pay him 25M a year?
I think he will re-sign
it will be less then what he would get in N.Y. (not picking on ya Wraith), L.A. or Boston. With the new stadium, the Twins will have to ante up to keep him and probably Pavano who I see being resigned as well with perhaps another F.A. pitching vet. I think this will be more of a case like Puckett and Hrbek in the late 80’s when both the Yankees and Red Sox were courting them with massive contracts and they decided to stay put for a little less.
