Joe Mauer at 30 Millon a year
I recently read in a local paper that if Joe Mauer enters free agency, and when, not if the Red Sox and Yankees start a bidding war, Joe's Salary could reach 30 million dollars a season. I as a huge Twins fan want to express that Twins need to get a deal done soon. Christmas has come and gone and no news has come that the parties have agreed to a new contract. Is Joe going to sell out to one of the evil empires out east? I hope not. If losing Johan was like a paper cut, losing Joe will be like a gunshot wound. The Twins will survive and generate new revenue at Target field, but The absence of our hometown hero will give Target field an empty feeling. I am hoping Joe and his agent understand how important he is to this team and fan base. The Twins will give him plenty of money if he stays, I hope that and knowing he is keeping his hometown ball team competitive are reason enough for him to stay. I implore Mr. Smith to get a deal done soon. I want to take my kids to Target Field some day and show them a huge statue of Mauer that is bound to be in front of it if he dose stay and tell them, that was the greatest player the Twins had ever seen, and I was lucky enough to watch him play baseball.

I, if not We agree with you Ryan, as you are exactly right
However, Joe himself has already stated it will take care of itself and happen when it needs to happen
so Mauer’s agent(s) and he will probably hold off at least for now.
I'd rather have Nick Punto playing 3B and Felipe Lopez playing 2B
than Punto playing 2B and Kouzy, Crede, DeRosa or Glaus playing 3B.

I strongly recommend
that we pay Joe Less than 30 Million a year….
If it is close to, or above that amount, the Twins as an organization will not be able to function in the same capacity as it has during this great run since 2001. -It is no secret (even if the darn payroll is going up to 100 million)
I'd rather have Nick Punto playing 3B and Felipe Lopez playing 2B
than Punto playing 2B and Kouzy, Crede, DeRosa or Glaus playing 3B.

Where's that $30M number from?
Only A-Rod* makes that kind of dough. Let’s not hit the panic button just yet. Joe wants to stay in MN and the Twins want to keep him here. They’re already talking, calm down.

And Joe's said time after time that what he is most interested in is winning
He has to know that taking a $30M contract would hurt the Twins’ chances – they couldn’t afford to pay enough other players to support Joe under that contract.
I think if he signs here, it will be for much less than $30M/yr. I doubt even the Yankees would go that high, but you never know with them.

Joe Mauer
is probably as deserving of a gigantic contract like that as any player
I'm not saying Mauer doesn't deserve a monster contract
I just think the Twins can’t afford to pay him one, and if Joe really wants to win with the Twins, he won’t accept a contract of that size with the Twins.
In terms of pure value that he adds, then yeah, of course Mauer is deserving of a gigantic contract.

I agree with all that
but if he makes it to free agency, some team would offer an A-Rodesque contract. Don’t doubt that for a second.
what if
Joe believes that the Twins have alot more money than they are saying. The owners have plenty of money. Maybe Joe will tell them to sell a radio station so he can get his 30 million and sign players to help him win.
true
he could call the Pohlads’ bluff

30 million a year
That figure came from a local newspaper ( I dont want to mention the specifc name)
Why not?
you should link to it if it’s online.
Anyway, like everyone, I hope the Twins get something done with him, and sooner rather than later. I sort of don’t want him to give the Twins too much of a discount, though. He ought to reap the rewards of his talent; why should ownership profit excessively off him?
Not to say they should give him 30 million a year—but a Teixeira like contract seems appropriate to me.

He's been using his column as a bully pulpit for Mauer doomsday scenarios for the last year

basically he is saying that
this time next year if Mauer went un re-signed by the Twins
Mauer’s bidding would get up around 30 Million from the Red Sox and Yanks and Mets and yatt yatta yatt….
And its probably a true statement.
I'd rather have Nick Punto playing 3B and Felipe Lopez playing 2B
than Punto playing 2B and Kouzy, Crede, DeRosa or Glaus playing 3B.

no doubt
I’m starting this post by admitting I spent the last 2 hours drinking in Santa Monica and strinking out with 3 different women, so I’m a little po’d. If Mauer became a free agent, he could probably ask for 30 a year, cuz he is the best player at the most difficult position in MLB.
Doesn’t it make you all sick though? He’s already got enough money that he could retire and live like a king if he invested wisely. Why don’t more top pros sign for a cheap contract in order for the team to invest in more players to help them win. Can that be a condition in a contract? With endorsements, he’s probably made 9 figures already. One could easily retire after makin 10 mill. I understand the desire to make more and more money, but if a championship is really the desire, then why mess the entire team up by requesting so much?
Doubt it would happen, but I wanna see Mauer sign a lifetime, 15 year, contract with a declining pay starting at 20 mill and going down 1 mill per year, all gauranteed money. This way he’s making money, even after retiring due to injury ten years from now when he’s 36. That’s more than enough bank to guaranty your great grandchildren will be set for life!
We all think this as fans
If he gets offered 30 million by the Redsox/Yankees, and 25 million by the Twins, even if he hated both the Sox and Yanks, 5 million is a HUGE difference. Anyone on this blog would take that 5 million to play for a team they hated rather then their home team.
at that point, I'm not sure I would
Either way, I’d get more than 9 figures overall for the contract. When you already have that kind of money, another 5M per year isn’t as attractive

yeah right
I’m sorry, I love it that people with little money think they’d suddenly be altruistic in those scenarios. I suspect most people would take the extra 5M/year without hesitating. Most do it in baseball, which is all you really need to know.
by diehardtwinsfan on Dec 29, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe I am being overly optimistic, but...
Most people do take the extra money in baseball, but I’d like to think Joe Mauer is not “most people.” Maybe that’s overly optimistic, but I’ll believe it unless he shows me otherwise.
And I can never be certain what I’d do, but I’ve always prioritized happiness over money, and I’d like to think I’d continue to do so even in that situation.

Kirby took less to stay with the Twins
Radke stayed with the Twins when he didn’t even know if there would be a team…
there are examples of people proving that the biggest check doesn’t always win but in today’s world it is hard not to be cynical.
++++++1
exactly. Kirby and Radke stayed in MN. Do we really think that Mauer would go to NY/BOS for an additional $5 million a year? I personally do not think so unless Mauer is one of the greediest players in baseball and just in it for the money.
I will quote Torii Hunter: “Baseball is a game played by kids and not by mega million giants.” Then, Torii goes and signs a $90 million contract. Nice philosophy Torii!!!…how about you follow it?
"Don't take life for granted, because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us." - Kirby Puckett
Twins made Kirby the highest paid player in MLB...
Hard to argue that Kirby “took less”. There’s always some vapor-deal scenario where we imagine a large-market club overpaying, but the Twins paid Kirby handsomely.
$30M is outrageous, whoever leaked that number has an agenda. I’m all on board for $20M-$22M/year — even for a long term contract — but there’s far too much injury risk at catcher for “breaking the A-Rod barrier”.
That said, all this stuff about expecting our Twins players to be “nice” and not be as greedy as the “bad” players who sign with the New York and LA teams is a bit naive. The Pohlads aren’t hurting financially and have done their share of nasty negotiating in the past 15 years in order to extort money from Minnesota taxpayers (fraudulant move to the Carolinas, contraction threat, etc, etc) which ended up working.
Yes, its a kids game, but it brings in big big revenue and I’d rather see that money go to the players than lining the pockets of the owners.
Sure the Twins
made him the Highest paid player but NY, BOS, SEA, LA were willing to pay a heck of a lot more for Kirby to play for those teams. NY was willing to top MN contract by $10-15 Million. I say that Kirby took less money to stay in MN.
"Don't take life for granted, because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us." - Kirby Puckett
I wouldn't
This is how Joe has expressed his values:
1. Family
2. Winning
3. Home team
4. Money
As long as the Twins offer a competitive salary, Joe will stay because of 1-3. The question is, what does he consider competitive? At that point, all we can do is speculate. But I look at Teixeira’s deal as a guide: 8 years, $180 million. Considering Joe’s position and his age, that would be a good deal for the Twins.

Yeah, the drinks didn't help the logic.
Doesn’t it make you all sick though? He’s already got enough money that he could retire and live like a king if he invested wisely. Why don’t more top pros sign for a cheap contract in order for the team to invest in more players to help them win.
How bout this: Doesn’t it make you sick, though? The Pohlads already have enough money that they could retire and live like kings for generations. Why not invest more of their own money in making sure the team has the players they need to help them win?
by Eric in Madison on Dec 29, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions
that's my point above as well
Joe could call the Pohlads on their public statements and tell them “I want my 30 million b/c I know you have it and still have money to sign other players”
Why would he settle?
Joe Mauer – why should/would he take less money to play for the twins?
Let’s think through potential motivators that will impact his decision:
(a) money. I’ve never met someone who wanted less (I never met Gandhi). Everyone prefers more, though each additional dollar is presumed to be worth less to that person. However, our MN friends Petters/Hecker certainly prove that isn’t always that case. Anyway, the NYY/Bos/NYM/LAA/LAD and a handful of others can all pay more than the twins. If Mauer perfers more money to less money, edge to him leaving.
(b) winning a championship: most players prefer winning, even when sandbagging (e.g. Karl Malone), to playing for a competitive team (good, but not a pre-season favorite to win it all). NYY/?Bos/NYM/LAA/LAD are all more likely than the twins to win a world series in the next 5-10 years. This is even more true if the team has to spend $30m/yr on Mauer. The above teams could still sign other players. The twins would have mortgaged the farm on one player, and would have to hope that baby jesus can do it all on his own.
© Not moving: Mauer probably prefers living in St. Paul. His parents/grandparents/high school friends/etc are all in St. Paul. Still, a lot of people love trying to live in new places (I do), and will prefer to move over staying stationary. Plus, $5 extra million will buy a lot of plane tickets, both home, and for people to visit you. Also, I don’t know if you guys have noticed (I’ve been back in MN since Dec 25), but the weather in MN sucks. Only some kind of wierd pride over how awful it is convinces people that they “actually like the winters”. I can’t believe, that when most of this continent was virtually uninhabited, some people chose to plant roots in MN, instead of, say, anywhere else. Anyway, edge: Twins, not sure by how much.
(d) Loyalty to an organization: most people don’t care. Some are convinced by some vague sense of romanticism, or in the case of sports, by local sportswriters, that loyalty to one team makes you a better person, or more loved. Frankly, Mauer would gain more love from the NY metro area than he would lose for teh 500,000 or so twins fans. Still, we can hope that he reads blogs like this, and decides that die hard fans like those here are right: Changing teams for extra money makes you a bad person. Edge: probably the twins, but IMO, he would be stupid to make any decision based on this.
(e) Friendship/loyalty to his teammates: this one most people care about a lot. I know that I like my coworkers. I’d probably like new coworkers as well, but it would be sad to change jobs (I’ll end up doing it anyway, but it’s still a downside to changing). Also, in baseball, Mauer can count on lots of his peers leaving anyway. Edge: maybe the Twins, but again, this is a stupid reason.
(f) injury risk: If Mauer really cares about money, then signing this offseason is worth something, on the odds that he could not be able to get a big contract next offseason. Edge: twins.
I think I’ve listed a lot of reasons that Mauer might want to stay with the Twins, but frankly, he’d be stupid to, unless it really makes him happy to stay around MN, and he enjoys competing for a team that is always in the mix, but not elite. He just has to decide how much money that is worth to him, and that will determine his price point.
For all the fans on this site – it’s easy to say he’s greedy if he leaves for more money, because you LOVE the Twins. It doesn’t matter whether it’s $1 or $100 million, you’d be upset if he left for money, because you would feel that he betrayed you. On the other hand, the conclusion that it reflects greed assumes that he loves the Twins as much as you do. Ask yourself this question: Do you love your current employer as much as you love the Twins? Remember, that though he grew up as a Twins fan, he’s not part of the labor pool. He is going to make decisions the same way you do when you look for a job. Where would I enjoy working, where would I get financial benefits, how would this impact my family? While he doesn’t need the incremental $$$ as much as some of us might, the number of extra dollars getting thrown at him is also a lot bigger. He has the chance to leave the kind of money to guarantee that his next 5 generations of offspring are wealthy. Lot’s of people would pursue that. Lots of people would also pursue working at the most successful company in their industry, working with the most talented coworkers, living in a new city, or just a change for the sake of change. It isn’t crazy.
Wow that was long – but I’m done now.
*correction
“He’s NOT part of the labor pool” should read “He’s NOW part of the labor pool”.
I wish I could edit comments, like you can to fanposts.
I had a bad dream last night
True story….more of a nightmare than a bad dream.
The season started without Mauer signing. We played .500 baseball for about half the seaons and then Mauer was traded for 5 no-names. We were all crushed. Even the great Jason Kubel practically gave up.
This whole thing about “winning.” The Twins have been winning, sure not the Series, but they’ve been contendars every year and look to be in that position for at least the next few years. Mauer himself has said that the playoffs always favor the team that is hot at that time. So going to the Yankees or Red Sox doesn’t guarantee a World Series championship, it just means you’d have a better chance. But then again, if you make it to the playoffs and you get hot, you will probably win, no matter what team you are (see 2001 World Series, Game 7, bottom on the 9th inning). This year, Boston lost, the LAA lost, STL lost. Only one team will “win.” So is Mauer smart enough to know which team will ultimately win the series? If he did he wouldn’t be playing baseball, he’d be betting on it.
So this whole arguement “Well, Joe also said he wants to win…” I don’t think he means that he’s automatically looking at NY or Boston. I think he needs to define what he means by “I want to win.”
The beard abides.

My non-factual thoughts
I don’t have as much knowledge of the inner workings of baseball like most of you have but here is my armchair analysis.
I love Joe Mauer and his velvet swing. I’d like to see Joe Mauer in a Twins uniform for the rest of his playing days. I don’t want to see Joe Mauer in a Twins uniform if it’s going to cost the team a long contract for a catcher and about 20% of its payroll. He’s a very good catcher that a team could build a team around but we all know the estimated amount of payroll we will be spending each year. A $25 to $30 million contract per year is going to make our team capsize like it was 1912 and we renamed the team the RMS Titanic.
For everybody clinging to the hope he will take a hometown discount, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. How many times in a baseball player’s career do they get the chance to sign a contract worthy of their playing ability? I’m my limited knowledge, it’s once. Twice, if you count a token contract when the person is in their mid-thirties but even that isn’t guaranteed (ask Damon).
Let’s put the hometown discount into perspective. Let’s say his worth is $30 million a year. Let’s say the Twins offer him $25 million. I mean…what’s $5 million less? It’s 17% less than $30 million. Would you take a 17% pay cut to stay with a company you like? The percentage gets even worse with less money; $25 to $20 million, 20% cut. I don’t know anybody in my current tax bracket that wouldn’t take a job for 20% more compensation. It’s tough to understand this because we don’t make millions of dollars. A $5 million cut seems like peanuts to us…just like a $25,000 cut from a $100,000 job would seem like peanuts to somebody making $20,000 a year. Is it peanuts to the person making $100,000? Absolutely not! Let’s not assume that $5 million is peanuts to people making millions either.
Plus, if he signs with the Yankees or Red Sox, he DOES have a better change of winning the World Series. Can he win a World Series with the Twins? Yes. Does he have a better statistical chance on a Yankees or Red Sox team? Yes.
