Tough choice

A lot of high upside guys in here. But in the end I went with Ramos, for a good combination of high potential, great defensive numbers, and great results through AA. That’s not to take away from any of the other choices; I think you could make a legitimate argument in favor of any of them.

It's Hicks

He’ll be a top 30 baseball america prospect this year. Ramos is a nice catching prospect but 1) he does get hurt and 2) he can’t hit a breaking ball.

by Gunnarthor on Dec 3, 2009 4:57 PM EST reply actions

he can’t hit a breaking ball.

He can’t?

I have not heard that and I think there is a lot of AA guys who have a breaking ball…so if that is true I am suprised.

If it IS true then I would have to rethink my vote for him as the #1 Prospect.

by clutterheart on Dec 4, 2009 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

That's BS

You don’t get an OPS over 1.000 in the VWL if you can’t hit a breaking ball. Latin pitchers are particularly adept at throwing breaking balls.

Both Jim Callis and Kieth Law have mentioned in thier prospect chats on ESPN.com and LEN quoted a Twin scout about it. He struck out over 100 times in 08.

by Gunnarthor on Dec 4, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

well Ramos must have been getting

better at breaking pitches since ’08

I’d be baffled if he couldn’t handle such a pitch, but absolutely destroy most of his competition.

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

He also has not been injury prone...

…he played all of 2008 and 2007 without any major injuries. This season he had two, unfortunately, one was a broken finger. He is a catcher, those things are gonna happen. His bit of an injury a couple weeks ago was a collision at home plate. But it kept him out only a couple days.

by roger13 on Dec 4, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

Am I wrong?

He only played in 73 of 140 games in Beloit in 07. Where else did he play that year? I’m pretty sure I remember him having injuries that year, too.

by Gunnarthor on Dec 4, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

He began the season in EST...

…joined the Snappers about 4-5 weeks into the season. Proceeded to be their best hitter after the all-star break when Valencia was sent to Ft. Myers.

by roger13 on Dec 4, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

I went with Wilson

cause he is good offensively and defensively, and he appears to be close to being ready for the call up. After that I would go with Revere as he two excells in his lane of the game and he should be in AA next year. I would like to see Hicks get more seasoning before I move him back up my prospect list. He may have better all round tools but he still has to make the adjustments in his game and have some more results. I believe they will come but not now for the top ranking in this seasons 50 top prospects.

Hicks... Aaron Hicks

Ramos

Results on offense and defense and has done well in AA. What he’s doing in winter ball is amazing.

by diehardtwinsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:11 PM EST reply actions

I voted Miguel Jean

Because he’s a beast with tremondous upside and we dont have our for sure 3B of da future with new specultaion on Valencia, and when he gets to da Majors he’ll be da first Twins Jersey I ever buy.

Possible Hicks comp

I was looking at old prospect lists, and Adam Jones had a lot in common with Hicks. Former pitchers. Center field, good hitter, fast.

Thoughts?

athletically, yes

his bat is behind Jones’s though

Huge Ramos fan...

But Hicks is the Easy choice for me.

As far as who to add to the poll next...

I think my next few votes will probably all be guys you already have up there. But if I had to add some new guys, I would probably go with Salcedo, and then Tosoni.

I use my hypothetical 'trade value' litmus test

And I determine that right now, Ramos would be the marquee piece in any trade. Revere and Bromberg would be next.

by Han Joelo on Dec 4, 2009 9:09 AM EST reply actions

Exactly

Pretty much the same as Bill Simmons on ESPN.com does with his Top 100 in the NBA. Ramos has more trade value than any other prospect in our organization, IMO. Hicks is up there, but he hasn’t shown anything above A ball yet. Yet.

by Adam Peterson on Dec 4, 2009 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Ramos!

If this is based only on upside I might have to go another way, but he has upside AND has very good offensive and fantastic defensive numbers.

I like Hicks, Jean, Morales, Revere and Valencia.

But none of those guys have put up the numbers of Ramos.

by clutterheart on Dec 4, 2009 9:33 AM EST reply actions

Certainly an improvement from last season

Adding Jean and Gibson to the top prospects helps, as does the success Ramos is having in winter ball. I think we may be reading too much into the winter league numbers, but three months from now, we will be Ramos in spring training.

BA system ratings

Twins system rated in the 6-15 zone. Above average and equal or better than every central team but Cleveland.

Why not Instant Runoff Voting?

Just sorta kidding, we’d be here all winter and get to #3.

Did Mijuel Jean just get 60 votes in the last 3 hours?

"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"

by maxisagod on Dec 4, 2009 2:39 PM EST reply actions

His agent put out a call

to Dominica, promised them a new baseball field for voting in a poll.

How about limiting poll participation to actual TT members in good standing for 3 months?

by Old Twins Cap on Dec 4, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

or just TT member that way you only get to vote once.

Let more people join if they want to vote.

by maxisagod on Dec 4, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

I was also wondering about that...

…are some people able to vote more than once? And yes, Ramos was ahead by about 30 votes maybe two hours ago. Jean has gotten about 60 votes in a couple hours with no one else getting more than a few.

by roger13 on Dec 4, 2009 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'm guessing some other site member noticed our community list going on here

and got a bunch of his other fellow board members to come in here and sway or voting….

damn

Front Office

Maybe Bill Smith made everyone in the Twins front office vote for Miguel Jean so that the owner would think that the money spent on Jean was money well spent.

by TwinkieBaseball on Dec 4, 2009 3:16 PM EST reply actions

I didn’t get a chance to vote – but theres no way I could vote for Miguel Jean as the number 1 prospect, as he has never even played a game in the big leagues yet.
