Twinkie Town 2010 Top 50...Voting for Prospect Number 6

With all the news coming out of the winter meetings, our voting for the Fifth best prospect in the organization was down as we had only 119 votes cast as of 3pm today.  The winner with 66 votes (55%) is this year's Minor League Player of the Year, Ben Revere.  Congratulations Ben!  There was a close battle for runner-up with Danny Valencia second with 17% (21) and Angel Morales a close third at 15% (18).

Billy Bullock didn't receive a single vote, Jeff Manship and Trevor Plouffe received one vote and Carlos Gutierrez received three votes.  With all four well under the 5% cutoff, they will be removed from voting for the Sixth best prospect.  Added to the next round will be Rene Tosoni, Adrian Salcedo, Alex Burnett and Chris Parmelee who were all included in earlier rounds.  Also added will be Rochester reliever Anthony Slama.

There have been  several players in each round receiving very few votes.  What are your thoughts about reducing the number of players in each round to say six or seven?  Also, please continue to leave your thoughts in the comment section about which players you would like to see added for future rounds.

Star-divide

The selections for the first five rounds have been:  1) Miguel Jean (fka Miguel Angel Sano); 2) Aaron Hicks; 3) Wilson Ramos; 4) Kyle Gibson; and 5) Ben Revere.  From where I sit, that is an excellent Top 5!  Kudos to all the people in the Twins organization that put in a lot of hours and miles as they work to make the Twins organization one of the best.....with most receiving zero recognition.

Good as is

You could make anyone of these players #6. Some might get 1 or 2 votes, but they still belong on the this list. The tallent is getting closser.

tough one here

all I have to say is that I think the Next 3 should be Bromberg, Valencia, and Morales but deciding upon the order is tough….

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

And you know what Steve?

…Rene Tosoni may be the best of this group. The way the Twins have pushed him, they have to believe he has a huge future. And after struggling a bit to start, he responded very well.

With that said, I voted for Morales, who I believe may be as good as any prospect including the five voted ahead of him. If he lowers his K rate to say 20% next year and raises his average just a bit….say to .275, if everything else stays the same he would have a huge year. And all of that from a kid who will be only 20 years old and playing in the FSL. His agent has to be smiling!

by roger13 on Dec 8, 2009 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I take Morales over Tosoni

because he projects to be a much better defender. Doesn’t need to hit that well to be a productive player.

Next round

Keep everyone but the winner, add in the Dominican kid Polanco.

Not bad choices

If they’re still going to go with the < 5% = off ballot for a round rule.

by DJL44 on Dec 8, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

It's fun to have a good system

BA ranks it in the 6-15 range. We have more 4 and 5 star prospects than Boston according to BP.

by Jon Kammerer on Dec 8, 2009 5:36 PM EST reply actions

Even better to have good, young talent in the majors

The Twins have both!

There’s really no excuse for them not to fill their infield holes via trade. There’s just too much surplus talent between the arb eligible guys and the minor league guys in the 15-30 range. The Gomez for Hardy move was the right idea.

by DJL44 on Dec 8, 2009 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah we're set pretty good right now

Definitely the favorites for 2010 and 2011 in the central. Then when guys like Cuddyer get too expensive, we have good young talent to replace them. Sign a few key guys longterm (Mauer obviously, Slowey, etc) and we could be a powerhouse for the next 5-7 years.

It's crazy how much more upside our system has than it did just a year or two ago

We wen’t from having a lot of decent ready for the majors prospects to some real high end talent in the lower levels. It’s going to be fun to see these guys knocking on the door in a couple years.

by lookatthosetwins on Dec 8, 2009 7:06 PM EST reply actions

It's amazing what happens

when you spend a little money on the draft and international signings…

by Adam Peterson on Dec 12, 2009 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Had to go with a guy that is the best prospect that’s knocking at the big league doors. Morales is close, but his large amount of K’s concern me. BUT if he can continue to improve, man he could be good.

by hitormiss1414 on Dec 8, 2009 9:13 PM EST reply actions

He'll be tested

next year in the big ball parks and pitcher friendly Florida State League. on a side note in 07 the Twins Drafted Revere,Rams,Morales,Williams. Morales was 17 the others 18. Revere will start at AA, Morales at High A and Rams,Willams Low A. Add Hicks from 08 Draft low A same age as Morales. I’ll keep an eye on them all.

This one is tight.

And it’s no disrespect to Angel Morales, but I’m voting Danny Valencia this time around. Either way, for me they are the next two that need to be on this list.

5%

I’ve been swamped with work the last couple of days, so I apologize for bringing this up late. I just read the comments from yesterday’s vote, and wanted to chime in with my two cents.

I believe that there has to be a rule of some sorts in determining who is on the list. Yes, the most ideal list would be to have every single Twins prospect up for each vote, but we are not allowed to have that many. I think that in most of these votes, there are 2-3 guys that receive the majority of the votes. I agree that if I vote for one of those guys, my next choice could be someone that got less than 5% Of course that will happen, especially in situations like : when you have to pick between Revere, Morales and Hicks. You’re just going to vote for one of them.

I think there should be some thoughtfulness that goes into who gets added and who is dropped, but having the system in place makes it run smoother. I know that Roger is taking a lot of time and putting a lot of thought into these polls, so I don’t question that.

And the other thing to remember is that this is a “Twinkie Town” poll, not our own individual polls. I mean, I could have whoever my next 6-7-8 players in my Top 50 Twins prospect lists as the next 6-7-8 in a poll. We could use MR Matthewsons, or we coudl just subscribe to whatever Baseball America tells us to think, or use Kevin Goldstein’s list. But it’s not my ranking, it’s our ranking. We don’t have to agree with what others are saying. So that is why we encourage the comments section for who should be added.

And again, if the guy you want to vote for isn’t in the poll today, make a comment, explain the reasons that you want to vote him next, he’ll likely be added the next day, and you can vote for him then. In the scenario, he may not come in 6th, but he could come in 7th.

And finally, just have fun. These types of lists are about discussing Twins minor leaguers, learning more about them. It should be fun.

by SethSpeaks on Dec 9, 2009 10:19 AM EST reply actions

5% is probably too high

Most of these rankings there’s 2-3 guys who are going to eat up the vote leaving scraps for the rest. How about the bottom 2 get dropped and replaced for one round. If their replacements don’t do well, they swap back in.

by DJL44 on Dec 9, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks Seth...

…Exactly what I was thinking, unfortunately, I don’t have the gift to say it as well as you just did!

+1

Thanks again Roger and Seth for running these votes

are we going to need a runoff vote here?

If it’s close don’t we do a runoff vote between the top two vote getters?

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Dec 9, 2009 11:34 AM EST reply actions

Upside drives my votes,

which puts Morales ahead of Valencia for me. Please keep Swarzak, Guerra, and Robertson on your list, gentlemen. And thanks for doing this.

by shrike on Dec 9, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Swarzak is no longer eligible for rookie status...

…thus, will not be included in any of these lists.

by roger13 on Dec 9, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Morales ahead

of Valencia…I did this as well. Morales is overlooked so much and I believe he is a top 5 prospect (at least previous to the Jean/Gibson signings).

I like Morales a lot

But I want to see more progress on his batting eye before I declare him a top 5 prospect.

Is Swarzak a prospect?

He threw 59 IP in the majors.

by DJL44 on Dec 9, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

Swarzak may be ineligible for these purposes

but he is certainly best-described as a prospect. Rules are rules, right?

by shrike on Dec 9, 2009 1:59 PM EST reply actions

The problem is, where do you cut it off?

Last year Seth used as the definition of who is eligible, the Major League Baseball definition of qualifying as a rookie status for rookie of the year, etc. Yes, Swarzak misses it by only a handful of innings. But if you bend it for that, then who is next? Does Morales (Josie) get included, he has only 122 at bats? If Morales, then what about Casilla…and so forth. Seth had used the baseball definition last year and we are continuing with it this year.
