No, that doesn't mean they're splitting the money.

Um

Um, sure. I don’t really know what this means all hat much to either side, but it doesn’t seem like a super big thing anyway.

It means

That he is being paid the minimum allowable within the CBA. Also, it means the Twins have bothered to add the clause about going back to AAA into his contract. He will have to earn every penny, beyond the 100 percent more than the average salary outside of baseball , of course. He can make that if he’s injured all year.

Both of your comments confuse me.

This fanshot confuses me too.

It's all in his conract

He signed a major league contract out of high school, with a huge signing bonus. So this contract represents the minimum allowable given the huge contract and signing bonus. Because he was being paid so much for the first five years of the deal, they have to pay him at least this much in 2009—a 20% pay cut.

Interesting

Since Delmon is not yet eligible for arbitration, what leverage did he have regarding the 20% pay cut? Perhaps we threatened him with a trip to AAA…

It's not

Delmon’s leverage, it’s the CBA’s leverage.

I understand

I was wondering if Delmon had any leverage to refuse the pay cut. It just doesn’t seem to happen very often for pre-arb players. Then again, most pre-arb players didn’t sign a $5M+ major league contract after the draft.

Ah, yeah.

This is pretty much a relatively unique case, as you say (and I don’t really know the answer to your actual question, sorry).
