Is Redmond Jersey Worthy?
So it's been a couple of years since I've purchased a new Twins jersey but I'm thinking I need to do my part to help the economy and make another purchase. Ha Ha. The question of course is, who's name and number do I get on the back? I thought I'd ask for advice on whether Red-Dawg is jersey worthy.
So why Redmond:
1. He created the Smell em' sensation
2. Oozes Twins-iness
3. Seems like a cool dude to have a beer with
4. Naked batting practice (might be a minus)
So why not Redmond:
1. Will any non-Twins fans know who he is? (might be a plus)
2. He might finish his career w/ another team after this year
3. Does anyone actually get jerseys w/ the name and number of a backup catcher?
4. Other more deserving player out there.
Alright guys, have at it. I hope you guys provide some input on this huge decision, ha ha again.
Go Twins!

Ah Red-dog
Is Redmond Jersey Worthy you ask?
I would say absolutely so, good sir. Just for the small fact as that one jersey will be a Twins fan detector. While every young teenage girl and their friend with know who Joe Mauer is. While a lot of Minnesotans will/should know who Justin Morneau is. The unsung hero will go unheard of. So, if you see a smile while wearing this jersey and look into that gleeful persons eyes and see the stories of leadership, the stories of laughter, and the stories of team chemistry that encompasses Redmond’s essence then you will know you have met a true Twins fan.
Is Redmond jersey worthy? You might as well ask if the Twins team philosophy is jersey worthy, because that is what he encompasses and he is the unsung leader the unsung hero of the Twins organization. Carry on…

Whenever we throw a veteran on the squad they either bomb (usually) or they succeeed and then they’re out of here. He did neither. Buy the jersey. He’s my hero.

Depends on what you value in your Twinkies
Sounds like you admire Red Dawg as a guy who plays hard, knows his limitations, and tries to rise above them when given the chance without whining about, say, not being called up when he still can’t find the strike zone with both hands and a pair of binoculars.
To answer your question, I have a Radke jersey and love it =)

Radke was my first
I love my home white Radke jersey and it does normally get a nod from Twins fans which is cool b/c I live out of state now.
I’ve been thinking about a Red Dawg jersey since he took a bat to the dome and gushed blood but still wanted to play. On top of that, him batting at home with that wrist pain that made it look like his whole hand was going to fall off. The man is nails in my book.
And yet here I am looking for a 2nd opinion, seems to be the spring for those…

Well...
Big minus – he’s in the last year of his contract. There’s a good chance that your jersey is “obsolete” after this year. I personally wouldn’t care – I often break out my Mitch Berger jersey when watching Vikings games – but that bugs some people a lot more than me.
Otherwise, though, it’s a great idea, one of those jerseys that will give you instant street cred among the Twins faithful – it’s almost as awesome as a LeCroy jersey.

I have a Dan Gladden jersey
Went the retired route, no chance of a repeat of either my Randy Moss or Daunte Culpepper Vikings jersey issues. At least the Vikings have a “Peterson” now…
I like the idea of a Redmond jersey. IMO, he probably won’t be a Twin in 2010. The question is whether he’ll end up playing for Chicago, etc at that point.

So far seems like you guys like the idea
I’m getting psyched at the idea of making the purchase now.

Well
since he might be gone soon, get the number and omit the name. Also, pray that the next guy that picks up the number is not a douche. Currently I am trying to decide between a Gomez jersey and a Cleveland Indians Roger Dorn jersey.

Go for Dorn
Nothing against Gomez, but that’s just funny. Kind of like I want to get a Cooper Beers jersey.

I'd go for Pedro Cerrano
Hats for bats. Keep bats warm.

IMO
I don’t think Redmond is a good idea unless you are prepared to replace the name and numbers and/or buy a new jersey in like a year or two. Unless you’re fine having an EX-backup catcher on your jersey.
I’m of the opinion that if you don’t want one of the current big name players on your back (too “well known,” afraid they’ll leave and want it to be timeless, etc) you go with a great player from team history YOU SAW PLAY. For me, that means Radke alone right now, hopefully someday Mauer. If you saw the WS wins, you could go with a somewhat less known player like Larkin or Pagurillo (sp?) or something.

Good thinking
I like the “second-tier historical guy” approach (Adam Peterson’s Gladden jersey is an excellent example of this – obscure to out-of-staters, but virtually any Twins fan will love it). I don’t like Pags for that, though – he was only on the team for a year or two, and he wasn’t really that good. If you can stand (or would like) the double entendre, Randy Bush would be a very good Larkin-esque pick.
Here are my top ten not-already-mentioned picks from ’87 to present:
Tom Brunansky (bonus: you could justify a blue road jersey)
Juan Berenguer
Ron Coomer
Denny Hocking
Steve Lombardozzi
Corey Koskie
Tim Laudner
Brian Harper
Shane Mack
Kevin Tapani
None of these guys will probably make the Twins Hall of Fame (although I guess I could see a few of them having decent cases), but they’re all players that will be fondly remembered by Twins fans over 30 and/or anyone who has played RBI Baseball.
Bonus Pick: Jay Canizaro – Twins starting second baseman for a year, give or take, who is probably best known for being quoted about Barry Bonds’ back acne in an ESPN the Magazine article.
Bonus Terrible Pick: Tommy Herr.

+1
I think Matt Lawton, Jacque Jones, Al Newman, Mike Trombley, and Greg Gagne would all be fine additions to this club too.

I can't believe I forgot to think of Newman and Gagne
man, this is harder than I thought. But I’m really enjoying everyones ideas on the topic.

Nice...
I almost picked Jones (he was the odd man out when I remembered Mack and Taps), and I am ticked for not remembering Lawton, Newman, or Gagne. Gagne would’ve knocked Koskie or Coomer off the list, I think; Lawton and Newman would’ve been Jones-esque honorable mentions, although it would’ve been hard to leave Newman off. It would be pretty cool to have a Newman jersey just for the Seinfeld references… I wonder if he and Jerry White ever had the “Hello, Jerry” “Hello, Newman” exchange – I would pay to see that.
Not that I don’t appreciate Trombley, by the way… In the similar “semi-unknown middle-reliever” mold, I seriously considered adding Terry Leach, because I have an inordinate fondness for submarine-style pitchers.
