No changes in Mauer's condition...

LaVelle E. Neal III reported a few minutes ago that General Manager Bill Smith has updated the press on Joe Mauer's condition.

As we know, Mauer had seen several specialists in the Twins Cities and went to Baltimore (presumably a Doctor at Johns Hopkins) last week to see one of the top specialists in America for this area of the body.  That doctor conferred with the others regarding the SI problem and recommendations for treatment.

Mauer will be taking the recommended medications (Bill Smith did not clarify what it was) and is expected to be back on the field when cured.  Bill Smith did not clarify when the Twins thought that would be.

LENIII...

…has just added an update that he talked to Mauer and Mauer indicated that he doubted he would be ready for opening day.

I'm not a conspiracy guy

and I assume it’s not particularly serious, but…

a whole week to report essentially nothing after his 2nd opinion in Charm City? “inflammation?” Isn’t that a symptom, not really a diagnosis?
It takes them however many weeks into spring training to get to this point when he hasn’t been able to play from the start?

There are things I don’t like about this.

Poo Poo Poo

Poo S*** damn. Not good, we need the chairman out there.

Can’t wait for this to spawn many “Mauer should have his position switched” columns in the mainstream media despite the fact that this injury isn’t aggravated by and doesn’t prevent him from crouching (he’s been practicing that along with hitting, throwing, etc) and b> only affects his running and c> was caused by a non baseball occurrence anyway.

Not that logic ever stopped them…

The backsliding on this story has been epic

The media didn’t even report that he was hurting last fall. Then, the operation in December was not mentioned until mid-January. And remember how it was: “No impact. He’ll be ready on Day 1 of ST.” Then, when he gets to camp, it turns out he hasn’t thrown or hit since the end of last season. And, that he needs to go slow at the beginning of camp. Six weeks later, he still can’t run or hit or throw.

I don’t care what doctors say or how many opinions there are. The directionality on these stories is all in one direction: down and out.

It doesn’t do any good to get all gloom and doom about it, but the fact is that “official reports” keep heading downhill. Even should Mauer somehow get back to playing ball, are you going to tell me that some anti-inflammatories are going to knock out something that is affecting him at this level of seriousness?

No, this is not going to be resolved easily IMHO. I think we need to prep for the worst: Redmond catching, Morales every third day, maybe Butera on the bench. And this is likely the scenario for months, not weeks.

Combined with their early inability to rally and score runs in ST, this could well be 2007 all over again: Quality Pitching—-No “O”

Those terrible media guys

>>Can’t wait for this to spawn many "Mauer should have his position switched" columns in the mainstream media

I’ve read very little of this sentiment in the “mainstream media.” I hear it constantly on sports radio shows and read it all the time on baseball blogs. Here’s just one example of the latter (see comments).:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/139329-joe-mauer-injury-prone-or-a-bad-case-of-snakebite

>>The media didn’t even report that he was hurting last fall. Then, the operation in December was not mentioned until mid-January.

That’s easy to explain. If Mauer didn’t want it mentioned, the Twins would never mention it. As for the surgery, medical people can’t reveal Mauer’s surgery or report on his health any more than they can reveal yours. So if Mauer kept it quiet, and his family kept it quiet, who could possibly know?

I imagine we’re looking at two catchers going north: Redmond and Butera. It’s not the same as carrying Mauer and Redmond, where Mauer might DH, leaving the Twins with no catcher on the bench. If Redmond and Butera go north, one will always be on the bench.

Bloggin' the bloggers since 1938.

So if Cuddyer and Crede can be the players we know

I’m not saying career years, just what we know what they can produce, can the Twins survive w/out Mauer until end of May?
W/ no timetable on when Mauer will return, I would be surprised to see him on the field in April.
I actually think the Twins can still be around 1st place if Crede and Cuddyer start off hitting well.
But it would be nice for the Twins to start explaining what is going on w/ Mauer and what are the possible timetables on his return.
