Claim Casilla looks like he is all hyped up on caffiene. Is he always like that at the plate? I don’t watch many/any games.

Casilla extends the count … good at bat.

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

not sure if Casilla

usually is hyped up in the batters box. He usually looks pretty calm but between him and Gomez, I can definitely see them being hyper.

by BCTwins on Apr 3, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

announcers said that Casilla seemed to calm down

after he got the count full, so they speculated he must have just been a little jittery – but that seems odd for a spring game now that Casilla is an established player – sorry it was just an anomoly after all.

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

that is strange

Casilla usually isnt very jittery in the box…as a matter of fact, I have never seen him jittery even with runners on third – in a tie game- in the bottom of the ninth!!!

Well

that was a nice first inning for Slowey!

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

oopsy!

Home run from Adam LaRoche off of Slowey here in the 2nd.

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

I think

all of Adam LaRoche’s homeruns have come off the Twins this year.

by BCTwins on Apr 3, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Pirate announcers

just said Craig Monroe has 7 homeruns already this Spring!

Span (Spring luck)

gets a hit, a solid double, and then gets caught trying to stretch it into a triple… …

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

psh...naturally

he cant seem to catch a break!

Buscher "crushes"

a 3 run homer off of… …Donnie Veal.

Buscher / Harris platoon

is it too late to get in the time machine?
Nah, good luck Crede!
but I really was ok w/ Buscher and Harris splitting 3B.

by caluofmn on Apr 3, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I know Gardenhire is loath to do this, but...

Busher has almost double the numbers of Crede in the same number of bats:

Buscher .377BA, .460 OBP, .490 SLG

Crede .176 BA, .250 OBP, .290 SLG

Wouldn’t it make sense to play the hot hand until Buscher cools off and Crede starts picking it up?

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Not willing to read too much

into spring numbers. We didnt sign Crede to sit the bench until he warms up.

by guinness junky on Apr 3, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Who is "we"?

Are you making the argument that the Twins organization shouldn’t sit Crede, no matter how poorly he plays, nor no matter how well Buscher is playing? Or are you trying to make the argument that the Twins organization has the general philosophy that they won’t do that even when it flies in the face of logic?

These numbers won’t be “spring numbers” come Monday; they will have meaning in each and every game.

It is my understanding that the Twins brought Crede in to compete. He is not Albert Pujols or Alex Rodriguez, and he isn’t getting paid like them either. Hell, there is an argument to be made that he isn’t even Joe Crede anymore… anyone remember a guy named Corey Koskie after he hit the age of 31?

Or how about the logic of playing the veteran over the youngster just because “we” didn’t sign him to sit on the bench if he was performing poorly. How many examples are there of the Twins organization, or Ron Gardenhire doing that to the detriment of the team?

I know it is far more complicated than simply saying Buscher’s offensive numbers are significantly better than Crede’s right now, but the argument for playing the “best” player on any given week shouldn’t/cant be dismissed so offhandedly.

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I know Mike Lamb

and you sir are no Mike Lamb…

Crede is a step above Lamb chop so I think he will be given all the abats at 3B for awhile but if they turn into and stay assbats, I don’t see why the Twins will force the issue. If Crede is batting below .200 after the first week of May I bet we start to see Buscher play a few games here and there. And if that happens who knows Crede could become an expensive cheerleader.

We got spirit yes we do! We got spirit how bout’ you!

by caluofmn on Apr 3, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

The year before Lamb came over to the Twins he hit .289, .366, .453
The year before Crede came over to the Twins he hit 248, .314, .460

So you are right, there is an argument to be made that Joe Crede of 2009 is no Mike Lamb of 2007 – because offensively Mike Lamb is better. However career wise I might suggest that the offensive numbers are close enough to warant a strong argument that Joe Crede is Mike Lamb with the significant difference being that Mike Lamb was never subject to long stretches on the DL!

Joe Crede career totals: .257, .306, .447 798 games in 9 seasons
Mike Lamb career totals .277, .333, .417 936 games in 9 seasons

You know what the biggest difference between Lamb last year and Crede this year? Last year Busher was not yet ready for the major leagues…

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

oops

forgot to thank you for the humor in your reply. I hope I didn’t come off as sounding critical of guinness junky. Just skeptical of the argument that he has to play because we signed him.

BTW my original post wasn’t referring to Lamb, I was originally thinking about that long and painful stretch where Kubel sat on the bench and Bartlett sat in the minors while the Twins insisted on trotting out Juan Castro…………………….

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 3, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

no worries

I will never claim to have the stats to back up most of my observations. (does that make me an irresponsible poster?) I just remember not being impressed when they signed Lamb and thought Crede at least had a much larger upside (than that signing). Not surprised to be wrong. Let’s just hope that Crede performs better than Lamb did for the Twins.

I agree with you though, Crede is not being paid a huge salary and the Twins don’t owe him anything other than a fair shot to hold down 3B. If he can’t do it then bring on Busch-errrr! Or whoever gives the Twins the best chance at winning.

Ah the Juan Castro days… those send me back…

by caluofmn on Apr 3, 2009 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, when you said Crede is better than Lamb...

I completely agreed at first. But I wanted to see how much better. I was shocked to see how close their offensive numbers are/were. That is what perception gets you. I believe Crede can probably play defesive circles around Lamb and that would likely justify the perception, but offensively, not so much.

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 4, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

The Twins signed Crede to give him a chance to play, hoping that he can come back to form. They did this, because they know that if he is healthy, he is a superior option to anyone on the roster to play third. He will have every opportunity to show he can play when games and stats actually matter and are very unlikely to suddenly defer to Buscher until Crede “warms up”

Spring training stats are fun, because they give you some hope for the season but nothing more. Hell if they matter so much, lets go grab Monroe, because it was clearly silly for the Twins not to retain him.

I know it is far more complicated than simply saying Buscher’s offensive numbers are significantly better than Crede’s right now, but the argument for playing the "best" player on any given week shouldn’t/cant be dismissed so offhandedly.

Sure, but lets base the decision on stats and games played when they actually matter

by guinness junky on Apr 3, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you

Every year, there are guys who struggle in the spring and flip the switch when the pressure of the season starts on opening night. Every year there are guys who do great in spring and wither under the bright lights of the regular season. As a gross generalization, the former tend to be guys with a few years of experience and the latter tend to be rookies and second-year guys.

Young guys who struggle in spring training: Now you’ve got something to be worried about. Span is the only guy coming north that I’m really worried about. Good thing we have depth in the outfield.

Guinness and cmath

you guys are arguing well beyond my original point. Admittedly I understand that caluofmn and I went off the path too in our discussion over Lamb vs. Crede… …but the original thought that I threw out there is not an argument to install Buscher as out 3rd baseman over Crede, but to ride out Buscher’s current hot streak rather than waste it.

Attempting to reduce that argument by claiming it is somehow analogous to going out and getting Monroe because he is posting good Spring training numbers is missing the point altogether. Buscher might not be a better 3rd baseman this year than Crede, but he is A LOT better right now during this hot streak. Signing Monroe because of his current numbers would be foolish, but if he was on the team I sure as hell would consider starting him in the outfield over Denard Span right now. To not consider it would be as foolish as looking to sign him because of this hot streak.

Crede is struggling a little right now (not a lot, granted – at least not like Span) and Buscher is tearing the cover off of the ball. Both for average and for pop. Without Mauer we need that production.

To argue that sometimes some players flip a light switch on opening night is just as silly. Even in the few and rare instances of such a turnaround happening overnight, it is foolish to take such a general rule of thumb that veterans are more likely to pick it up (and conversely rookies more likely to wither) once the bright lights are turned on, and apply it to a specific set of players. That is pure speculation along the lines of gambling.

My original argument is that if we are going to gamble why not place our bets on the statistically more probable bet: Buscher’s hot streak is not going to suddenly turn off on Monday, and Crede isn’t going to suddenly come out of his (small) struggles on Monday. The only way Buscher is going to suddenly go cold is by taking the bat out of his hands.

How long will Buscher tear it up, and how long will Crede struggle? Who the Hell knows, but I think it is worth considering riding the two streaks out until one or the other disappears…

by montanatwinsfan on Apr 4, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

To argue that sometimes some players flip a light switch on opening night is just as silly.

Not an argument. A fact. I’ve seen it dozens of times. Brad Radke had horrible springs. Opening night, he often pitched brilliantly. Frank Viola the same. Guys don’t have the same juice in the spring, or they’re saving their bullets or their working on stuff and don’t really care about results. But when it counts, they dial it up.

scores on a hit by Benson! Twins lead 4-3 in the tenth!

by BCTwins on Apr 3, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Tolbert?!

That should have been a two-run triple, instead Tolbert ran back to first base for a tag and held Benson to s single, almost getting passed on the basepaths and creating an out to negate the run. According tot he announcers, the ball was crushed into the gap. The only question was whether it would be a triple (with Benson’s speed) or a homer.
