Game 38: Minnesota Twins @ New York Yankees

Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees, May 17, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

First Pitch:  12:05pm CDT
TV:  WFTC-29 & TBS
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy:  Pinstripe Alley

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - A.J. Burnett 2-1 7 7 0 0 0 0 45.1 42 27 27 7 19 36 5.36 1.35

Burnett's fastball is still top-notch, but it hasn't been enough to keep him effective.  He's had a couple of good starts mixed with a few disappointing ones, but the thing with Burnett is that the potential is always there.  On some days he can come out looking like the ace he was meant to be.  And after the luck the Twins have run into the last two days, he's due to come out blazing.

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Kevin Slowey 5-1 7 7 0 0 0 0 40.1 58 22 22 7 4 27 4.91 1.54

After a pair of disappointing starts Kevin came out on Wednesday and pitched well, allowing just a run in six innings.  To repeat that performance against the Yankees he'll need to re-establish his strikeout pitch; New York's lineup is infinitely more dangerous than Detroit's.

The Following Tidbit is from Joe C’s Blog Concerning the Bullpen

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire dropped strong hints on his weekly radio show on KSTP AM-1500 that the team is about to address its bullpen situation. He dropped more hints in his pregame session with the writers.

Terry Ryan has been watching the Twins’ Class AA New Britain affiliate, and the feeling seems to be that Anthony Slama and Rob Delaney aren’t ready to make the jump.

LHP Sean Henn has shown the most promise of the relievers at Class AAA Rochester. He has a 1.23 ERA, and fastball has been clocked at 95 mph. Henn is not on the 40-man roster, but the Twins could add him by moving Boof Bonser to the 60-day disabled list.

I think Gardenhire’s feelings about RHP Luis Ayala were made clear Saturday, when Ayala was warming in the bullpen, while LHP Craig Breslow faced Alex Rodriguez in the 11th inning.

My prediction is the Twins will be adding Henn soon, and Ayala could be on his way out. Stay tuned.

Henn, Morillo, and Swarzak

For Breslow, Ayala, and Dickey.

Numbers

Morillo AAA: 11 IP 5 H 3 BB 15 Ks 0 HR 1.79 FIP
Delaney AA: 25.2 IP 23 H 4 BB 29 Ks 1 HR 2.01 FIP
Slama AA: 20.1 IP 13 H 12 BB 33 Ks 1 HR 2.34 FIP

If you move Henn and Morillo up, you can promote Slama and Delaney to Rochester and they can get ready in case they’re needed later in the year.

Works for me

We’d have to add Morillo back to the 40-man, right?

I added the lineup to the post

I can’t complain about the lineup. Pretty much what we should do against a tough RHP.

If Span and Mauer

had made Burnett show a few pitches we would really have this guy in trouble right now.

He walks two in the first

and here in the second we make it easy on him by striking at everything?

Slowey

had a good first trip through the lineup.

The umpire is calling strikes today

It’s amazing what variation there is between umpires. The extreme was Wednesday night, when the umpire let the two teams throw a combined 463 pitches. Today we could see a 250-pitch game. Much more enjoyable.

Way to go Cuddyer

Mauer to 2 please??

This is getting a bit ridiculous, after Span got on in the 5th I just threw up my hands when I saw Tolbert come up to bat. I know it’s only like 30-40 ABs but I don’t understand why you would bring up a guy and put him right in the 2 hole. If he’s dead set against Mauer at 2 then slide Cuddy or Kubel up there. I don’t care if they’re not fast. This is just getting old.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

At this point, there isn’t much difference between Tolbert and Punto at the plate. Go ahead and bring Casilla back up. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson.

Even with Casilla, Mauer should bat #2…

Was the Twins taking a 3 run lead in the 14th then giving up a grand slam to Giambi in the 14th. Just what i wanted to know.

Better than nice

Dick said it best. There’s probably one catcher in the entire league who makes that play.

I have to wonder why Mauer was creeping out toward first with the ball. Someone’s got to be yelling sooner. Too bad it ultimately didn’t make a difference.
