Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

From Joe C at his Strib blog, it looks like Young will be back in the fold by Sunday His time on the Family Medical Emergency list has expired, but will not be back with the team until after his mother's funeral. As for Morales, this means his hot bat gets sent back to the minors until such point that his services are needed again. With how he's been performing, it's a real shame to see him wasted in Rochester. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options for the Twins.

Our thoughts are with Delmon and his family.

Is there a team that needs to rent a back-up catcher?

As much as I love Mike Redmond, Morales needing to go down to AAA makes less sense.

End of the line

Redmond was a nothing prospect and turned it into a nice career, complete with World Series ring, after arriving in the big leagues as an old man. But he’s hit the wall. He’s at least five pounds heavier this year and certainly is off to a very spotty start, complete with two mental mistakes in that recent losing string. Bad for a veteran.

This will be his last season, and it might reach the point where the Twins won’t mind facing a situation where he goes on the DL. They have another three months of carrying him on the roster until it expands. Highly unlikely that he will be traded if the Twins are contending, as you don’t trade away a veteran catcher in the event something happens to your front-line guy, and no one will offer much for couple dozen games they could get out of him.

I agree.

There isn’t much trade value there, unless someone loses their own top two catchers and is need desperate need.

The Ultimate "take one for the team"

Redmond hoping to get traded so Morales can come to the big club. I can see it, but I’d miss him.

Maybe Redmond and LeCroy can open a bar together? I’d be there every night.

Another option to keep Morales

Send Tolbert back down and allow Morales to play second base to keep his bat in the lineup. I believe he played the infield before being converted into a catcher. I am not sure what position, but it would be nice to replace tolbert’s bat with his.

Morales hasn't played second base since rookie ball

He was moved behind the plate because he was too slow to play up the middle and he didn’t have enough power to play on the corners. Since then, his legs have taken a pounding behind the plate. If he wasn’t good enough for A ball, and he’s considerably wordse now…
