Game 46: Boston Red Sox @ Minnesota Twins

Boston Red Sox at Minnesota Twins, May 25, 2009 2:10 PM EDT

First Pitch:  1:10pm CDT
TV:  WFTC-29
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy:  Over the Monster

2009 - Francisco Liriano 2-5 9 9 0 0 0 0 50.2 49 35 34 8 25 40 6.04 1.46

His last time out, Liriano's one big inning against the Sox was the catalyst for what was ultimately the team''s defeat.    He's straddled the line between effectively wild and simply wild this season, and it's never an easy thing to tell right off the bat.  It seems like his control, or control of his lack of control, can come and go at any time.  It could be a confidence issue, but I'm fairly certain it's just as much a mechanical issue.  Cisco over-throws at times, and it gets him into trouble.  It'd be nice to see him pull out a complete performance against a premier opponent today, a la Scott Baker last night.

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Brad Penny 4-1 8 8 0 0 0 0 43.0 54 33 29 5 17 22 6.07 1.65

Penny's been better over his last four starts, working deeper into games and not getting completley shelled.  A big part of his relative success has been his ability to avoid free passes, walking just four over his last 19.1 innings.  He's still giving up more than a hit per inning however, so if the Twins can convert with runners on base they should be able to make a game of it.

It’ll be an interesting game without Mauer, Span and Crede. Hopefully Liriano will have a good game and the offense will offer at least a little bit of support.

Is it just me, or are these My29 cameras just terrible? Everything looks choppy and bad.

Cuddyer homers!!!

Man, is it nice to see us mashing like this…

Can't say I blame Buscher...

Both balls hit to him were smashed. With that being said, would Crede have come up with one or both of them? I think so.

Thanks,

can’t tell from the radio broadcasts.

I was going to ask y’all if Crede might of had one of those but I was afraid I would get a reply from a myopic “homer”

Great

first time through the order – 1 hit, no BB…

I don't know what to make of this sort of outing

on the one hand, he isn’t walking anyone, and he’s missing a ton of bats, but on the other hand…he’s getting beaten up—11 hits in 4 innings. It’s very strange.

A typical Liriano game...

got the bad hitters to chase out if the zone, but the good hitters killed him with his constant mistakes in the middle of the plate and up in the zone.

He still doesn’t have any control, or a real plan of how he wants to pitch. He got by on smoke for so long…now that the smoke is gone, doesn’t seem like he knows what else to do. Until this changes, good hitting teams/players will continue to knock him around…

Everyone needs to get off the Cut RA Dickey Bandwagon..

Who else would come in to pitch when Liriano or Perkins gets their 5-6 earned runs before the 4th?

"Statistically"

Dick just claimed that the Red Sox have received “statistically” worse starting pitching than the Twins.

Red Sox FIP (starters): 4.64
Twins FIP (starters): 4.65

really, you expect Dick to know about FIP?

Yes

If he uses that rhetoric, he should.

Had a feeling this game would be ugly...

Liriano vs Red Sox is a bad matchup for us, and there are 5 free outs in our lineup today…

So yeah, Gomez needs to play everyday.

only

because Young is so bad. Gomez hasn’t really earned it

I’m really liking Dickey as the Long-Reliever…he gives the hitters something completely different to throw them off.

by hitormiss1414 on May 25, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

yup

RA is pretty valuable when used ONLY in that role.

Joe Mauer...

is not human!!!

FU%!K AYALA!

and his one run relief appearance!

Oh shoot got ahead of myself there,

I forgot that HR was off of Dickey.

Sorry Luis.

An understandable mistake...

Ayala had his bacon saved by Henn. BTW, is Ayala the Spanish word for “surrender?” Because that’s what I feel we do when he come into the game?

And Delmon Young...

is not a baseball player…

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on May 25, 2009 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Does Delmon even have value anymore?

by y2jayjk on May 25, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Not much, I fear

the problem is that being young only gets you so far. He hasn’t gotten one inch better since he became a major leaguer. He’s moveable, but not for a ton of value.

by Eric in Madison on May 25, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't imagine...

that any team with a legit Scouting Dept would trade anything of value for him. He has no idea what he’s doing at the plate, I could find a blind guy to play better D in Left, and he has shown no inclination to work hard and get better even now in his 3rd full Major League season.

The “he’s still young” arguments are out of time. This young man needs a wake up call!!! Send him down and tell him he doesn’t come back until he learns even a modicum of plate discipline. Until that happens, we are just enabling his poor habits..

Maybe someone who's willing to take a chance and hope a change of scenery will turn him around

When Smith got him, he was second in the ROY voting as a 22 year old

I think you can excuse him for thinking Young would continue to improve.

This game

Was unfortunate. Buscher was the real dud. Youk’s first ’’double’’ could have been an inning ending double play. He looked real bad at the plate, popping out before mauers home run. I can’t stand Buscher on the field..

The

On the bright side, it wa sjust a one run loss and Joe Mauer is still not of this planet.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."

Mauer's HR

Almost made sitting through the rest of that crap worth it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hitter on this awesome of a streak.

Loss was not the 'pens fault, Liriano is to blame for that "L"

Yeah Can’t wait to see Tuesdays lineup against the very much malinged Jon Lester LHP

yeaaaayikes

the very much malinged Jon Lester

These things always worry me. The Twins have had a way of making pitchers with “something to prove” look like Sandy Koufax this year.
