Game 26: Twins @ Detroit
Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers, May 4, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Darn EDT games; hope you hurried home from work to catch this one.
TV: FSN (theoretically in HD, but if you have Comcast, you'll have to wait and see if they deign to actually broadcast the HD feed. Cause, you know, that extra money you pay for HD only goes so far. IT'S NOT COMCASTIC PEOPLE.)
Radio: As usual, the Twins Radio Network. Gordo! The Dazzle Man! Two or three correct counts per ballgame!
Know Thine Enemy: Bless You Boys
Starting Pitchers:
Edwin Jackson Scouting Report: You're remembering correctly - he used to pitch for Tampa Bay. And he's off to one heck of a start as a Tiger; he's held the other team scoreless into the seventh three times already this year. Jackson throws a 94-mph fastball that he'll occasionally gear up into the 97-98mph range, along with an 85-86mph slider (and a handful of curves or changeups.) He'll throw about 60% fastballs and 30% sliders.
Lineups:
TWINS
1. Denard Span, CF
2. Alexi Casilla, 2B
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Justin Morneau, 1B
5. Jason Kubel, DH
6. Joe Crede, 3B
7. Michael Cuddyer, RF
8. Delmon Young, LF

I would shout "First"!
But then I would have to punch myself at least three times, so…
here’s hoping we can put together a complete game tonight and win one.
Well at least that was a good start for Liriano.
I stepped away from the game and the half inning was already over…
I'm thinking
Casilla needs to take a trip to AAA. Agree? Bring up Tolbert……

you have to be kidding
even Gardy, who loves Tolbert, says he isnt ready for the Majors…he is hitting .225 in AAA. If Mauer was hitting .160 would you say that he needs to head down to AAA?
What then would you suggest?
Casilla is stinking it up and looks lost. Send him down and bring in another versitale player

Casilla hit .200 or a little above that
in April of last year for AAA…he came up here and was on fire. He starts slow…give him a break, let him rest a few days in order for him to get his head back in the game, and then send him on back out there. The Twins would not have gotten anywhere close to the playoffs or to game 163 without Casilla…I think Twins fans need to get off his back.
He started slow last year, then was on fire.
One year… one year means that therefore “He starts slow”? Could be he is just not that good of a hitter and had one good 3/4 of a year. Using your criteria there is no way you can say you are right and I am wrong.
I don’t know what the answer is, but I know its NOT forcing our team to suck ass with Casilla in the #2 slot, taking up extra outs and killing rallys.

Gardy was pretty broken up about sending him down
That seems to imply that he’ thinks he’s ready for the majors. Is he an upgrade over Casilla? I wouldn’t say that quite yet. Give it another month. In the meantime, work with him to get him back to when he was a loose cannon in the number 2 spot last year.

Tolbert is sucking.
But I don’t see why Gardy insists on hitting Casilla 2nd.

punto
done and done. Or Harris. Either works

Punto
also has a better walk rate, K rate, and OBP (although neither of them are good) so in short, yes he’s doing better.

He's doing better than Casilla
That doesn’t make him a good candidate to hit second. Just move Casilla to the nine spot and move the rest of line-up up one notch.

Not Punto
He’s a strikeout machine. When he’s not striking out, he’s hitting into DPs. No thanks. Been there, done that (2007).

Well at least it wasn't a DP
seriously, take some pressure off of the guy and sit him for a game then bring him back in the #8 spot.
Brian Gorman...
is having the worst Balls and Strikes game I can remember from an ump this year.
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
And I see CB Bucknor will be behind the plate tomorrow...
Looks like I am going to have a very difficult time watching this series. I can’t wait until a computer can call balls and strikes. I’m all for maintaining the “charm of the game,” but clowns like this just ruin it for me.
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
baseball has already been ruined
by technology….lets not have computers call balls and strikes…might as well have robots playing in the field then at the same time.

I 99.9% agree with this sentiment...
but the horribly inconsistent strike zone is ruining the integrity of some games for me. If they could get the umps to call it consistently, I’d support that. I just think too many umps are set in their ways and will never change.
A debate for another time I suppose…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
I agree with this statement
umpires should be trained to have a mid chest to knees strike zone….some have huge zones some waist line to knees and smaller. Umpires should have a set zone before calling games.

For real though, check it out, Michael Cuddyer has very, very quietly gotten his BA to .270 and his OPS juuuuuuuust above .800. If he reproduced exactly this line over the whole season, I’d take it and run.

Or did the words “bases loaded for Alexi Casilla” nearly scare you to death, too?
That is his second hit from that blasted side of the plate. Way to prove me wrong, Alexi. Now come home.

I really like Alexi Casilla, I love how he plays, think he plays good D (though not lately) and think he should be a pretty decent hitter for a speedster (.290/.350/.365 kinda stuff, with good D at short) but he just isn’t getting it done at all right now.

Is it just me
or is Liriano throwing a lot more sliders than he has been in past starts?
I've noticed that as well...
And I’m torn on how I feel. While he should obviously use it as his strikeout pitch, I feel as though he is “whoring” it out. It’s not going to be as exclusive or deadly after a while.

Well, its just today
but his heavier use of the slider does coincide with by far his best outing of the season. I think he needs to use it to be as effective as possible. It’s still his best pitch.

yeah, with all the work our bullpen has seen lately we almost have to go with ol'
rubberarm Dickey, huh?
Mijares hasnt pitched much
so I wouldnt at all be afraid of handing the ball to him or Crain. Liriano has thrown 99 pitches through 7 innings…I think we can give him a rest from todays game and possibly hand him his first win if the right people are called in from the pen.

Oof
Liriano sure seems dominant tonight. 9 K’s, only a 4-8 GO/AO ratio, but 4 of those FB outs were infield pop-ups, so great ball in play stuff really. Taking a quick look at this pitches it looks to me like he did well throing 2 and 4 seam fastballs with some changeups and sliders mixed in early in the game and has been able to go to save a mostly slider/chageup mix for later in the game and it’s been highly effective.
Liriano is REALLY to read early in the game. Is his fastball hitting spots? If no, he has to go to his breaking stuff and offspeed stuff early in the game. He can only go a few innings like that alone, his slider isn’t good enough anymore for him to throw it 60 times in a game and get day with it all day. But if he is able to throw lots of fastballs early in the game and get outs, he can mix in the slider for strikeouts early then throw the offspeed stuff liberally later in the game when those same hitters come up again and be really, really dominant.
