Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

ESPN's Jorge Aranqure Jr believes Minnesota is still in the game with Pittsburgh for the 16-year old shortstop. With the Pirates possibly not willing to pony up the necessary cash, will the Twins be able to sign the next young middle-infield phenom?

That would be sweet

Sano is the number one July 2nd guy. I have a hard time seeing the Twins pony up that kind of money, though.

I thought that the reason the Pirates so over drafted Tony Sanchez 4th overall was to save money for Sano.

I've heard it's only something like $4 million...

…and considering what teams like the Yankees and Red Sox have bid in order to secure Japanese talent, I think that’s quite reasonable. It’s all relative, sure, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them dish that out for a guy with potential like Sano.

As far as the Pirates are concerned, I keep reading two things: That draft funds and international signing funds come from two seperate pools, and then like you say…they come from the same pool, so the Pirates needed to find a way to off-set the believed cost of Sano in the draft. But I have no idea.

All I know is that five years from now, when Mauer and Morneau and are in their early 30’s, the Twins are going to need somebody waiting in the wings, someone being groomed to be a big-time bat. Sano could be one of those guys.

I totally agree

I absolutely endorse this. I just have a hard time seeing them actually doing it. As for the Pirates…one pool, two pools, it’s all money. There’s no question they took Sanchez to save money

Go for it!

They’ve got the money. This would be a first: A high-profile Latin player singing with the Twins? I sure hope so.

I've got a feeling this is going to end up like Miguel Cabrera

A good story of what might have been HAD the Twins ponied up.

One other quick note

about Sano: nobody really expects him to stay at shortstop, by the way. The hope is he can handle third base. Everybody thinks the bat will play anywhere, though.
