Game 72: Minnesota Twins @ Milwaukee Brewers

Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers, Jun 23, 2009 8:05 PM EDT

First Pitch:  7:05pm CDT
TV:  FS-N
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy:  Brew Crew Ball

It's my brother's birthday tomorrow, and he'll be in Milwaukee catching part of the Twins-Brewers series before heading to St. Louis and Chicago.  I'm not jealous.  I just want to chop him in the neck and wish him a happy birthday.

And I'm also jealous.

Starting Pitchers

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Jeff Suppan 5-4 14 14 0 0 0 0 76.1 89 40 38 12 32 41 4.48 1.59

Did you know that Suppan made his major league debut when he was 20?  Well, he did.  And so, in his 15th year in the league, Suppan continues to do what he's done for most of his long yet not always distinguished career:  get along.  None of his stats really stand out, other than his career-best ground ball rate of 51.4%, and for all his base runners he's lucky for that.  That stat widget wouldn't look nearly as acceptable if some of those hits were line drives or home runs.  Right now, the best thing you can say about Suppan is that he limits the damage by keeping the ball on the ground.  If the Twins are patient and wait for their pitches, which they'll definitely get, they should have the opportunity to put up enough runs to win the game.  But if Suppan can time the outs right and get that incredibly slow curveball to work how he likes it to, he could very well shut the Twins down.  It's happened before.

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Francisco Liriano 2-8 14 14 0 0 0 0 77.2 83 52 51 12 35 68 5.91 1.52

Cisco's ERA came down for the third consecutive game last Wednesday, and he has to be hoping for more of the same today.  The Twins need him to be the pitcher he's capable of being as we enter the heat of summer.  As has been the case for virtually the entire season, Liriano's focus needs to be on a number of things.  1:  Limit the number of walks.  2:  Keep the ball in the park.  3:  When running into trouble, keep calm and make the pitch that needs to be made.  It's a combination of loose mechanics and loose focus that seem to give good starts a nasty hiccup, and suddenly a four-run 30-pitch inning has ruined the four goose-eggs he just put up to start the game.  If he can succeed on the three points above, he'll be able to go deeper into the game and give his offense plenty of time to throw up some run support.

McGehee is having one helluva year, so it's good to see Kendall leading off.  Both Braun and Fielder are having great seasons as well, so it'll be a trial every time the Twins have to cut through the middle of that order.  Hardy and Hall aren't having years they've had in the past, but both Hart and Cameron can be dangrous if not paid proper respect.

With Span returning on Thursday, Gomez is getting at least one more shot to lead off, sandwiched between Young and Cuddyer in the outfield; no sign of Kubel.  Hopefully he'll be available off the bench later in the game.  The 2 - 6 hitters will need to get their jobs done today, because contributions from the other four will be a crap shoot as usual.

Because Suppan is right-handed...

…I’d rather see Kubel struggling to play left field than Delmon struggling to play left field. At least that way we’d have Kubel’s bat.

Predictions...

1—Delmon Young HR (Just to prove my first comment wrong)
2—Joe Mauer gets two hits and a walk
3—J-Mo HR
4—Liriano 6 IP, 7 K, 3 R
5—Twins 6, Brewers 4

Really wish Kubel was in the Line-up

It pains me to watch a game when Delmon plays

I know I am butchering Cmath's argument here but,

didn’t he argue against luck playing any kind of significant role in a game of talent like baseball?

How else can you account for a 3rd strike “wild” pitch pitch that allows Cuddyer to load the bases for Crede instead of being the 3rd out to end the inning scoreless.

Or how about the bottom of the inning with two on no outs and Ryan Braun, an impressive hitter, hits a pop infield fly instead of a sac or a hit.

luck.

Your disdain for Delmon at the bat

is clouding your judgment. He did nothing wrong in the field today. He’s actually played well out there for the last month. That play he made on the track was a very nice play today too.

by ajmargarine on Jun 23, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

well,

I haven’t had a chance to watch a game this year yet, but I saw a 1/2 dozen games and Delmon looked AWFULLY awkward, slow, and cumbersome even when he made the play. Everyone says he is actually fast so I suspect his bulk disguises his speed, but whatever – it is easy to look at him and assume he is a poor defender.

Here's a scenario... what do you think?

Love to Memphis for 2nd (to draft Rubio)
Trade 6 and 18 to Oklahoma for 3rd (to draft Thabeet)
Draft Harden with 5th
Use 28th as trade bait for either of the above deals.

That would give us a killer starting five for years to come. As much as I would like to see that 5 and 6 stay together, this would be hard to pass up:

PG: Rubio
SG: Harden
SF: Gomes
PF: Big Al
C: Thabeet

And Brewer. Nice, huh?

Trade Pick 5 and 18th

Trade pick 6 and 28
for pick #4 and Draft C Hasheem Thabeet

NEW LINEUP:

PG Arenas
G Brewer
F Gomes
F Jefferson

by BCTwins on Jun 23, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Kelly

MLB hired her right out of college. She obviously didn’t major in journalism. Perhaps she majored in technical communication because when she first started, her writing was as dry and clumsy as technical documentation. Add to that her mandate to just write what the team tells her to write and her work early on was pretty bad and in some cases misleading.

That said, she’s been on the job for three years and she has improved some. Lacking an editor, however, it’s tough to improve much. As someone who made the transition from tech comm to journalism, I empathize with her challenges. She seems like a nice lady. I regret the name I gave her and my snarky remarks about her in the past. If you’re reading this Kelly, I’m sorry.

I don’t blame her as much as the MLB for trying to do this on the cheap. As newspaper staffs shrink all over the country, you’d think they could hire a journalist editor who can manage these green writers and help grow in their craft by expanding their sources beyond team reps and writing more elegantly.
