Mauer and the SI Cover Curse
After last night's 0-5, Joe is now 3 for his last 21 at-bats. Just a rough patch that he'll work through or something more? Perhaps Joe is the newest athlete to fall victim to the curse. I don't know if any of you saw the article published in SI a few years back that they devoted to the history of the curse - it was actually pretty creepy. You can see the cover to the issue here:

For those with a little more time... I strongly recommend you read the full article here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/magazine/08/27/jinx/
At the end of the day, Joe will probably be fine. I'm sure he'll make me look like an idiot tonight with a 3-3 and pair of walks kind of night, but its still fun to think about.

Forgot to add this quote from the article:
“Perhaps, verily, IT CAN BE DONE - “it” being hitting .400 for a season-but not by the Colorado Rockies’ Todd Helton in 2000, not after his cover, which marked the beginning of a 25-point plunge in his average over the following month."
... same as the "sophomore slump"
Its always been the case of reporting on things that happened last year or last week. To avoid the “curse” the person has to play well enough to make the cover both before and after the cover appears. If its just after, then no cover, if its just before, then people will claim its the “curse”. The “curse” is basically just regression towards the mean.
Most covers in SI history are Jordan, Ali, Tiger, Kareem, Magic, Nicklaus… don’t see a curse there!
Not the first cover either...
The first cover back in August 2006 didn’t hurt Joe any. So, I think he’s safe. :-)
