Game 76: Minnesota Twins @ St Louis Cardinals

Minnesota Twins at St. Louis Cardinals, Jun 27, 2009 1:10 PM EDT

First Pitch:  12:10pm CDT
TV:  FS-N
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy:  Viva El Birdos

Starting Pitchers

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Todd Wellemeyer 6-7 17 15 0 0 0 0 86.1 107 55 53 11 36 53 5.53 1.66

The Cardinals aren't happy with Wellemeyer's performance this year, and it's safe to say that Todd himself probably isn't too pleased, either.  There've been rumblings that once Kyle Lohse returns from the disabled list, he'll replace Wellemeyer, which means we're getting a guy with his back against the wall.  It can be hard to predict how someone in that situation will respond.  The biggest difference that I can find between Wellemeyer's solid '08 campaign and this year are the extra-base hits; not so much in the area of home runs, where his rates have changed all that much, but his slugging percentage against gives something away:  .416 last year against .481 this year.  By this point the question has to be raised:  was 2008 less of a coming out year for Wellemeyer, and more of an aberration?  Hopefully the Twins can take advantage of this opportunity to know Wellemeyer out of the rotation.

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Kevin Slowey 10-2 14 14 0 0 0 0 84.2 102 39 38 12 14 67 4.04 1.37

Seven of Kevin's last eight starts have been of the quality variety.  His last time out he allowed just three hits over six innings, but he did walk four.  As a team the Cardinals are taking the fewest walks per game in the National League (just three per contest), but let's be honest:  you never want to do anyone any favors.  Slowey's traditional ERA (4.04), FIP (4.02) and xFIP (4.37) are all within close range of each other, which tells me Kevin is pitching pretty much at the level we're seeing on the field.  No smoke and mirrors.  That will have to continue this afternoon; a few strikeouts, one or two walks and using all of his pitches for strikes.  If he can avoid the long ball, all the better.

Looks like Wellemeyer

is the Cardinals’ Liriano, look at that whip! Let’s hope the Twins’ bats do take “this opportunity to know Wellemeyer out of the rotation” … like a Vulcan mind meld?

Hot game.

Whew.. 92 degrees to start at 1pm raising up to 96 by right around the 9th inning. Very humid also. This would not be a day to have Boof Bonser on the mound.

If Ozzie Guillen likes Punto that much, I vote we send him down to Chicago. Punto and Guillen deserve each other.

Slowey at 10-2

with 3 more starts til the All-Star game. I think only 2 more starts until they select the pitchers? 2 wins in next 2 starts assures him a spot imo. Let’s go bats.

Hmmm,

back to back walks, good first inning so far, even if we dont score we’re making this guy work hard.

The Twins are very much playing against a pitcher with his back against the wall.

From what other Cardinals’ fans tell me, this guy isn’t liked in St. Louis.

27 pitches for Wellemeyer in the first inning.

Hate to jinx things, but that’s a good sign.

Haha, you should read the Cardinals’ blog I’m reading. They’re SO excited that Mauer gets the day off today. I can’t wait to see what they say when he hits a pinch-hit, go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth inning.

Where's Gomez?

Besides catching Crede when he dives for foul balls in the dugout, what possible benefit is there to his riding the bench?

Either start him regularly or ship him to Rochester, IMO.

In interleague play, it's even more crowded than usual

Would I start Gomez and sit Kubel, Span or Cuddyer at this point? No. We should see Gomez back in CF once we can move Kubel back to DH. Too bad, since Gomez was heating up, smoking the ball the other way before Span came back.

St. Louis,

2 runs, AND making Slowey work a little to boot.

by montanatwinsfan on Jun 27, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Two things:

1. Pujols is unreal.

2. Gomez needs to be in AAA to get regular ABs, he is a big part of our franchise and needs to be playing everyday to get better. He can be back up in September.

by hitormiss1414 on Jun 27, 2009 1:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Even sooner, if necessary.

Just a month or 6 weeks should be fine. Leave the September call-ups for guys like Tolleson and Delaney.

I agree

that Gomez should be in AAA. I don’t understand what all the fuss about him is though. A “big part of our franchise”? He has talent – no doubt – but he just doesn’t get it.

by wcooley on Jun 27, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but he just doesn’t get it.

if that is true, all the more reason that he should be playing, reviewing video, and being coached consistently so that he can learn rather than sitting on the bench.

by montanatwinsfan on Jun 27, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His defense is fine, but I'm sure it could be better.

His offense, though, is atrocious and needs the most help. I don’t know much about Rochester hitting coach Riccardo Ingram, but I’m sure he could work wonders for Gomez.

Burning in that sun with an extremely slow pitcher. Painful.

Quick hits: Josh Kinney

- 30 years old and has more great facial hair out of the Cardinals’ bullpen.

- 47.6% groundball, 42.9% flyball, 9.5% line drive rates.

- 44% fastball (90 mph), 46 % slider (82.1 mph), 10% curveball (79 mph).

Alright, I just missed the entire inning. Hope he comes on for the next inning…

what the heck is going on here MN

Stupid stuff late—

we don’t ph for Tolbert.
we didn’t double switch when we brought in Dickey

by ajmargarine on Jun 27, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thinking about it more

Complete inept managing from Gardy. You HAVE to double switch when you bring in Dickey to complete the 8th. You bring in Morales to catch and have RA hit 7th in the order. Geurrier probably wasn’t available today. So what do you do if you tie with only Mijares and Nathan available? Stupid (non)move.

And we didn’t PH for Tolbert and his sub Mendoza hitting line. Gardy’s been talking for days about playing Cuddy at 2B, so PH for him there and if you have to make that move with Cuddy, well do it.

I’m sure it came down to us not having a 2B available today with Punto still hurt. Well, that’s because we have 3 catchers on the roster! We have the best player in baseball who can only play one position. We have his backup who can only play one position. So we call up a 3rd guy who can only play one position while we are playing 9/15 games on the road in NL parks where there is no DH. Stupid stupid stupid. Morales has 4 ph ab’s during this span of interleague games.

by ajmargarine on Jun 27, 2009 4:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing

I thought for sure when Gardy brought in Dickey, he would bring in Morales to catch for Redmond, thus double switching.
