I Swear to God
I will no doubt flip out and maybe give up on baseball forever if this is true.
I don't have ESPN Insider, but Buster Olney just released a headline that read "J. Mauer in pinstripes". If that has any semblance of truth to it, I will quit watching baseball altogether. I will make it my life mission to kick the shit out of any Yankees fan I ever come across. I will absolutely lose it, and most likely end up in prison for the rest of my life if Joe Mauer EVER ends up playing in New York.
Also, it's nice to be a new member of Twinkie Town. Been a lifelong fan and Minnesotan. I'm also on Norseman. Hey folks!!

First off, excellent icon.
Second, don’t flip out. The story is worth writing about becausof the realistic possibility of that scenario for just about any other human than Joe Mauer.
The Yanks need a catcher, the Red Sox need a catcher, both teams will gladly get into a bidding war for Joe Mauer (like Texiera this past off season) and Joe could reasonably expect one of the biggest contracts for anyone ever.
But, the Twins are not fools and given Bill Smith’s desire to make up for one of Terry Ryan’s few weaknesses (re-signing veterans before they get to free agency) the Twins will offer Mauer a significant contract extension before next season begins.
I have NO idea what that offer will end up being or what Joe’s contract eill look like, but I guarantee you Joe Mauer will want to remain a Twin and will not be set on testing free agency for more money so long as the Twins’ offer is a legitimate one.
“A bird in hand” $millions now to stay at home, and be able to sleep in his own bed (and see his family) on what few days off he has during the season without having to get on YET ANOTHER plane, is worth a lot to a Minnesota raised boy like Joe. Throw in the opportunity to be the most revered Minnesota sports figure ever in his home state.
“Is worth two in the bush” All of that outweighs the chance for more millions a couple of years from now to go play for someone else away from home with the chance of getting hurt before the contract is offered or signed.
So long as the Twins offer something serious soon, I don’t have any reason to believe Joe will be going anywhere soon.

Buster Olney is a moron the whole point the Minnesota Twins are building this new stadium is for increased revinue so they should be able to hang on to a player like Mauer. Second Mauer WOULD take less money to stay in Minnesota hes a good guy
"If at first you don't succeed - Skydiving isn't for you"
Olney is definitely not a moron,
and frankly most people would salivate at the type of money that they KNOW the Yankees and Red Sox are going to be throwing at them.
I think Hunter really did want to remain a Twin for life, but in the end his frustrations combined with the legitimate desire to make twice as much money somewhere else where he could win. Few people would turn away from that, nor should fans (who have a brain) be mad at them for such a smart business decision.

I wouldn’t be mad at Mauer, at all.
But I would hate the Yankees more than words can describe.
Wait a minute…. I already do!
‘And the wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws’.
I wouldn't even hate the Yankees
I would hate Bill Smith and the Pohlad family. I would literally call for a public lynching.

public lynchings are sort of frowned upon dude
even calling for one is considered poor form these days.

maybe he can just kick Bill Smith
in the shins, nothing like a good kick to the shins to modify behavior…
Just so we're clear, here's the recap of Olney's post.
1. Mauer could be a free agent at the end of 2010. This means he could leave for greener pastures.
2. That said, Mauer’s a local boy, and he’s represented by agent Ron Shapiro, who made deals for Puckett and Ripken that kept both with their original franchises.
3. If Mauer wants to chase the biggest offer, the Twins may not be able to afford him – but there’s no guarantee that that’s what he’ll do.
So the headline doesn’t exactly match the article.
thanks, I dont have insider
your recap proves that Olney is not a moron.

I hope you're right
and Mauer gives the same “hometown discount” Kirby gave. It’d kill me to see him playing for the hated redsox or the evil empire (yankees).

Those Yankee bastards!
Joe’s not going anywhere. That will single-handedly end Twins baseball. The Yankees would win the world series for at least 5 years in a row. I can’t stand the thought of this. I need to go OD on something to get that wicked thought out of my mind.
"He didn’t call me or anything. It was an accident, but a lot of people would have called to see how someone is doing after they got hit in the head. Especially if they had to go on the DL." — Morneau on pitcher Ron Villone after an April 2005 beaning.
might I suggest cheese curds...
of course an OD on those you won’t live long enough to see if Mauer goes to NY or not.
No Average Joe
Joe Mauer is the Derek Jeter of the Twins, in that he is priceless to his organization. I can’t imagine the Twins organization letting him go, as I see them paying him whatever it takes, (perhaps 20 million?) to keep him in Red White and Blue. Expect Bill Smith and Co. to keep Joe around for his whole career in Minnesota.
