Mauer's Impact
Wins and Losses are obviously what matter. Twins without Joe Mauer=1 win above .500. Twins with Joe Mauer=.500
But I just glanced at the numbers.
Twins Run Differentials:
Without Joe=-21
With Joe=+50
Runs/Runs Allowed per game
Without Joe=4.08/4.92
With Joe=5.16/4.38
Plus of course there has been three games that Joe hasn't started but appeared late as a pinch hitter. The Twins lost all three of those games. Joe was 2/3 with 3 RBI in those at-bats.
I just found this interesting since the run differentials obviously don't line up to the win/losses. I thought it would be closer.

Interesting and not predictable
suprising to compare the runs “for/against” differentials, see just how wildly different they are and yet see so little significance where it “counts”; in wins/losses!

Blowouts...
I think we lost more blowouts in April and since then we’ve been winning more blowouts… 20-1 over CWS, 11-0 over SEA…
bb-ref has us 10-13 in 1-run games for the season and 12-11 in blowouts (5+ run diff). Fairly even for the year, but it would be interesting to see the April splits for those…

ouch
I would’ve thought our 1-run record would be better given how much of a stud Nathan is.

Those two things don't really go together automatically.
In any game the Twins are down by one run, Gardenhire won’t let Nathan get anywhere close to the mound.

The run differential numbers are what count
Though some idiot is probably going to use the win % numbers to argue that Mauer isn’t the MVP.

But Mauer is calling the pitches right?
Higher runs scored has to be on him partially doesn’t it—for picking crappy pitches? Or are the pitchers just that mediocre combined with meh-to-cool defence?

Read the numbers again...
RA is actually down significantly since he rejoined the lineup. Main reason is probably Baker & Liriano both settling down after very rocky Aprils.
That said. “Calling a good game” does help a little bit I’m sure, a catcher can only do so much. Generally pitchers don’t get beat up for hitting the spot set them by the catcher’s call, they get beat up when they miss the spot. The catcher may call for the breaking ball, but I don’t think he’s responsible for when the pitcher hangs it.

Mauer's Impact on Defense
yeah, game calling is important. But I’m guessing an easily quantified benefit of having Mauer behind the plate is subduing the opponent’s running game. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like everyone and their mother was running in April on Redmond/Morales.
And I screwed up on the RA numbers, I should have accounted for games he was at DH too. But its not really that important I guess. This afternoon when Im bored with doing actual work I think i’ll check these.
