Anyone want Julio Lugo in a Twins Uniform.
Ran by this article on Fox earlier today where Rosenthal mention the Sox were desperate to move Lugoas they are likely to have to DFA him soon. He's played mostly at SS, but can play a little 2b as well. Offensively he has a line of .284 BA, .352 OBP, and a .367 SLG for an .719 OPS.
Red Sox are so desperate to move him they have agreed to pay "virtually all" of his remaining salary $9million this year and next, and "would accept a fringe prospect in return for him."
Was thinking about running this earlier when it was clear the Sox would accept a fringe player, but decided he wouldn't garner enough interest until this resurfaced at mlbtraderumors.com with the added benefit of Boston agreeing to pay for "virtually all" of his salary too.
Red Sox "Desperately" Want To Move Lugo
p.s. sounds like his defense is pretty darn bad.

Short answer: No.
His defense is pretty terrible: -43.2 UZR/150 so far this year after seasons of -2.6, +4.3, and -8.0 going back to 2006. And I’m sure someone who cares more about this sort of thing will come along later and go on and on about he’s not a “Twins kind of player” or something like that.
sign me up
he was just DFAd. He’s more worthy of a roster spot than Casilla, Punto, Buscher…..
Wow our team sucks.
I am baffled at how you can
say that the Twins suck when they carry three all-stars, a gold glove 3B, a gold glove CF, and a great DH along with our young talent pitchers in Slowey, Blackburn, and Baker. This team is one 2B away from being able to take the Central Division…maybe a bullpen arm as well but less of a priority now.
Lugo is a below average player paid loads to not perform. He is only lethal because of his speed but speed does not a major league ballplayer make. If we are going to get somebody, let it be some real talent – Sanchez, Escobar, etc. – and lets leave these old washed up vets alone. I have seen too many washed up vets with Twins uniform on in the past few years – Hernandez, Ortiz, Sierra, Batista, Ponson, Lamb, White, Monroe, etc…
Actually ...
Our team sucks. I finally realized this when we blew a 10 run lead against the 2nd worst team in the American league (Indians are worse in my opinion but not the Royals). Slowey and Baker are not as good as you think they are, and Blackburn probably isn’t as good of a pitcher as he was in the first half. Remember that Blackburn was our best pitcher for the first couple months last year too before tailing off dramatically in the latter 3 months of the season.
I hate to say it, but when a team regularly fields guys like Casilla/Tolbert and Nick Punto, along with double-play Delmon, we officially suck. Oh by the way, we have 3 starting pitchers with an ERA over 5.00 and only 3 reliable relievers in our bullpen.
thank you
that’s exactly what I’m talking about. The fact that Lugo would be an upgrade over anyone on our roster is a bad thing. The fact that he’d (likely) be an upgrade over 3 is god awful.

Mauer would not work at second base
he is too tall for second for one thing. Another is that he just doesnt have the agility required to play that position. Plus, he has said multiple times that he is going to stay at catcher.
I know sarcasm doesn't play well on-line...
But do you honestly not get this extremely obvious example???
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Mauer at second?
Not extreme. He’d win the gold glove there even if he had to play on water.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Saying I would rather put Mauer at 2nd was more of a comment on how bad Lugo would be for our team, and not about Mauer REALLY playing second. However, he would probably surprise you at 2nd, and would make fewer errors than Lugo. But I agree, I would like to see Mauer behind the plate his whole career, until his knees force him to full-time DH. Go TWINS!
Lugo is so bad defensively that it would be hard to play him
They clearly need an upgrade, but here’s my standard: I want them to get someone who is better than Brendan Harris. I don’t think that’s setting expectations too high. Better than a marginal starter who really should be a bench player. I don’t think Lugo gets there at this point.

Q: Who wants Lugo on our team?
A: Red Sox fans.

It's a worthwhile question...
Lugo is terrible, but considering our 2B situation has been horrific this season, would he be an upgrade? Without knowing his defensive capability at 2B, it’s difficult to say. My instinct is to roll dice with Casilla instead (since Bill Smith is curled up in the fetal position in his office waiting for the trade deadline to pass).

well
He’s probably an upgrade at this point so I’ll take him since he’s free. (ok prorated league minimum) But I’d prefer the Twins go get someone good. I’m more annoyed with the Twins refusal to go out and get talent when there’s an obvious need and no depth at that position readily available in the minors.
Go get Sanchez and a reliever
