Game 96: Minnesota Twins @ Los Angeles Angels

Minnesota Twins at Los Angeles Angels, Jul 23, 2009 10:05 PM EDT

First Pitch:  9:05pm CDT
TV:  FSN
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy:  Halos Heaven

The Twins look to bounce back late tonight against the red hot Angels. After spending much of the first half trailing the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles finds themselves in familiar AL West Division territory, leading the Rangers by three games. The Angels come home on a five game winning streak after sweeping the Royals and taking the last two games in Oakland. At first glance, this matchup could be a problem for the Twins pitching staff, which gave up 32 runs in Oakland while the Angels scored 27 runs in their 3 game sweep in Kansas City.

Starting Pitchers

Expect quite a few fly balls tonight, as Jered Weaver (0.62 GB/FB) faces Scott Baker (0.72 GB/FB).

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Jered Weaver 10-3 19 19 3 1 0 0 124.0 107 51 48 14 39 107 3.48 1.18

Jered Weaver has been the Angels' ace in 2009, posting a 10-3 record, 3.48 ERA, a shade lower than his 3.78 FIP. Weaver's 2.74 SO/BB ratio is very good, but looking a bit deeper, it appears he has been lucky as well as good. Weaver's .277 BABIP is very low, due for a regression. For an extreme fly ball pitcher (0.62 GB/FB ratio), Weaver does not give up very many home runs. His 7.8% HR/FB rate, while low, is in line with his career 7.8% rate.  Weaver comes off a poor start against Oakland, giving up 8 hits and 5 ER over 3.2 innings. After the game, Weaver noted that he felt quite ill during the game, so this might be an aberration. Then again, it might be a continuation of Weaver's poor July. In four July starts, he has been hit hard to the tune of 22.0 IP, 4 HR, 27 H and a 7.36 ERA. Can the Twins take advantage?

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Scott Baker 8-7 18 18 0 0 0 0 109.1 108 63 62 19 23 90 5.10 1.20

After a poor start to the 2009 season, Scott Baker is back. Over his past nine starts, Baker is 6-1 with a 3.97 ERA and only 5 HR allowed. He comes off his best start of the season in Texas, scattering 6 hits over 8 innings and allowing only 1 run in a 4-1 Twins victory. Other than a 12.5% HR/FB rate (which has come down in recent weeks), Baker's peripherals are generally in line with career averages, which gives me confidence that his good pitching can continue.

twins and longevity

I know the Twins philosophy has always been about consistency, promoting from within, playing the right way, etc. but sooner or later BS is going to have to take a long hard look at Gardy and ask himself if the guy is physically/mentally capable of making the decisions to win a championship. personally I think he’s too nostalgic of his own failed baseball career and an outdated understanding of the game. the game has change a lot, and I just don’t think the man gets it, or wants to for that matter.

another batlett situation

casilla has the same potential as bartlett, but at this point it just won’t matter. gardy just doesn’t understand him as an individual so he’ll never be accepted or really be appreciated until he’s with another organization. obviously bartlett was eventually able to play well here despite gardy sending him back and forth, I am not sure mentally get past all that has taken place this year.

you can talk about stats and stuff all you want, some players are just not capable of performing at a high level when they’re unconfortable with their situation

I can’t remember ever having less fun watching a baseball team. No idea why. Probably cause Bill Smith had an entire offseason to address the bullpen issues and didn’t, and doing stupid stuff like playing Delmon over Gomez for three months is going to cost us the division.

Not after he threw so many pitches in one

Serious, this ump has a tiny strike zone and every Angeles hitter knows it.

Speaking of Crain,

Anyone else think it was Anderson’s tinkering that really messed him up?

it messed up his confidence. He doesnt seem to trust the movement of his anderson induced sinker.

Bleh.

This roadtrip was looking very very promising and has gone very sour very quickly. This is the time of year when teams with a chance rise up and the pretenders show their true face, and the Twins are sinking fast.

I would say

I would say at least we know just what we need to get this offseason to be a very nice team, but it’s all the same stuff we needed last winter, so…
